My theory is that the seeker swarms left behind trace amounts of a chemical in the air which fill those exposed to it for too long with blind rage.

Okay, if Shep is dead for 2 years how would Ash have been pregnant for 9 months between Shep's death and resurrection? Last time I checked, which was 8years and 6 mos ago pregnancies are generally 9 months long.
