The problem with the new art design is that they don't look like anything remotely from what we have seen in DAO and DAA. The artwork is so different, to the point no one really recognizes them for what they are suppose to be. Its takes the player out of the world you originally created and hence the illusion you are trying to create no longer exists.

I dont se that big difference. And mostly not with Awakening. The Hurlocks in Awakening looked alot like the ones in Dragon Age II, just the teeth thats different.

But The Emissary is a differen thing. They look more like tall Genlocks. There I agree that the new look is not so good, not that the old one was good.

This is a good and useful set of comparisons. I must say that the new Hurlocks look more tormented and the old ones look more vicious. The last two screenshots especially make the Hurlocks look like they were designed with snakes in mind.

Still don't see the need for a makeover, and I doubt we will told why. Some internal arguments/conclusions/upheavals/whatnots.

And yeah, Flemeth is totally Maleficient now. Good catch! Maleficient was one bad*** witch. Whoever the VA was for that movie, they did a fantastic job. I support looking like her.

Disney really, really don't make animated films like this anymore. Some of this stuff is really comparatively dark to the vapid garbage they produce these days.

Barring another shift in the game's visual style I really doubt we'd be changing it again.

Given the sweeping changes between DAO and DA2 are done simply because the new version is considered to be better looking, why the doubt it could change again? After all the next game will also strive to look better than the previous/current one, won't it?

I think it's more about general style rather than trying to look better. A big concern for a lot of fans was the art direction of the first game. Many thought it was too bland and repetitive. It's my impression that Bioware took this on board and thought since this is only the second game they could give it a visual overhaul to make it more appealing to fans.

I doubt they could make a drastic change in style every entry into the series since they would like to carve out an identity for the Dragon Age brand.

changing the ways things look so suddenly takes the player out of the world.

It takes you out of the "old" world and into a new game :)  It is just a design change, in the end.  I don't think it looks bad.  It looks brighter from the screens I have seen, and by brighter I mean gamma brighter contrast difference etc.  Kind of like what would happen if final fantasy had a baby with dragon age in terms of colour :P

Now, my big love is characters - the writing, the models, the texture, the...everything! And I LOVE new Flemeth.  Being able to inhabit the body of "daughters" would have her appearance looking exactly like what she chooses I think. I have been without a computer for a while as I fried mine, so if I am incorrect about the flow of recent lore/logic, feel free to crucify me here *grin*  I personally love the new do, and the new Flemeth, voice actor (kinda) morph is awesome.  Plus, she even reminds me a bit of an older Morrigan. ;)  I'm digging the mild dimples :P

As for better teeth: maybe they have just become more "civilized" through evolution.  Maybe their bodies transformation no longer rot their teeth,or they have discovered the fine art of a splintered femur toothpick.  Or, you know, it could have just been a design change for heaven knows what reason. (change is good?)  I think people are focusing on the teeth, when the real difference is the brightness of the shots ( and probably the game itself.)  It is just brighter.  The body textures are just, well, less creepy. Brighter, closer to human.  Big thighed humans might I add.  No-one cares about muscular thighs? lol   Getting eaten by one will be creepy enough I'd wager.

Modders will be all over the models and textures in no time anyway.  Always something for everyone in that respect, but having a strong game overall is more important than teeth in my humble opinion.

Wow. That video brings back memories. And comparatively dark? Now that I look at it, it's positively frightening. The kids must have been scared witless. But they really really did the story justice and produced a masterpiece. I'd say that's a solid win.

...... I'm still reeling from the impact of Eleanor's voice. She is beyond superlatives.

Heh...if you look at Matt Rhodes' deviantart, I'd guess he drew some inspiration for Flemeth's redesign from Maleficent all right:

Yeah, I agree. DA2 comes across to me as much of reboot as it does a sequel.

No but you really need to get off your high horse,  jumping to these kind of conclusions without even playing the game is silly at best and inflamatory at worst.

Well, that's.... slightly disappointing. It looks like Flemeth IS Matt's Maleficient, minus a nice face. I was hoping he could spin a bit of Flemeth's persona into it, but no harm done really. Flemeth aping Maleficient is a good thing.

In more ways than one. What I 'm curious to know, but don't really think I'd like to hear the answer to is the why. Let's just hope it keeps the old-school base (most of us) happy. I'm assuming that with all the effort they're putting into grabbing more casual gamers, some of it will pay off.

That and there's always multiple choice.  Not everyone took her on in the first game.  Whether that has as much bearing on DA2 on whether you played 'bed buddies' with Morrigan remans to be seen though.  Besides it was fairly strongly hinted in the first one that Flemeth was more or less likely to survive any in game death.

Though I'm more interested in finding out if anything Morrigan said about Flemeth was the truth.  The game was insistant on making us doubt what was really going on with Flemeth that I have no idea if Flemeth really did posses her previous daughters or not.

Agreed. She's positively spitting venom when she diatribes about the prince rescuing the princess through the power of love. It's chilling.

Sooo.... the reason behind the art change was to give it a more "unique" look?

How is making it look "cartoony" (or "stylized" as everyone loves to call it today. Whatever.) like every other game "unique"?

It makes me think of other cartoony-looking games. I see nothing unique about it. Hell, it reminds me a lot of Bioware's own Old Republic.

Also, I absolutely hate the new art style, and it's been the main thing keeping me from pre-ordering the game.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying visual consistency. I don't see how feeling that way has become a bad thing, but I'm not a crusading yes-man, so what do I know?

because they look at the sales of those games and see a trend forming. So instead of trying to do something really unique they just try to copy what is the current trend hoping their sales will rise as well. Its all about money
