This.

Honestly, I am getting really tired of all these romance threads. You DO NOT know who the companions are yet let alone whether they are romances. Romances are one small optional feature for those who choose to persue them. Yet they get an inordinant amount of time and discussion space. When we have new people coming here to learn whether DA2 is a game they would be interested in and they see so many romance threads "Is X character a romance, are there s/s romances, I hope I can X romance, what happened to my DAo romance, etc" it actually starts to harm the sales of the game (for those who are looking for an action game, RPG or story based game and not a romance sim).

Yes, there is nothing against the rules about romance threads. I won't stop them or anything (within the usual rules, etc). Still.... it makes me tired.

That seems like an odd way of thinking. Your fanbase likes a particular portion of your games, that's true. I think BioWare fans have been focused on romance for years and years now. It just surprises me you would...deride, I guess, those fans.

I know some only play BioWare games for the companions, and, by extension, the romance. Some people only read books about fairy tales.

I think it's rather cruel to say that these people who love your game are hurting your sales. We're told over and over that this forum represents a tiny, minuscule portion of the fanbase (and argument I use myself to dissuade people who think that the majority opinion here reflects gamers everywhere). So why is it something we like particularly comes in danger of harming sales?

I have a lot of respect for BioWare, and for you, Mr Priestly, but this just felt mean.

The entire story of Dragon Age is really good written. The companions feel alive, the world feels alive, feels like it might exists. That's why people play the game, to emerge in a fantasy world, to communicate with the companions.

You say she is an exclusively gay hermaphrodite?

I don't know how that'd work.

 Since it's just a typo, and I like Lovey, I won't add that as my new sig quote.

I am confused as to why people think Anders will be in this game. Several reasons, he has to play a role in Awakening which takes place...right in the middle of Hawke's story, and then even at the end of Awakening he had an epilogue, thirdly, srsly?

Well, there is basically a picture of him standing next to a bunch of companions.

Re: Chris Priestly's comments

I think it's because its much more fun to speculate based on little to no information about romance options than it is to debate, I don't know, combat systems or places like Lowtown.

So in that sense, it's your fault. Bioware likes keeping things about their game close to the vest, and that's fine, as I'm sure you have your reasons.  But don't be surprised or frustrated when that results in the most popular and consistent topics being about love interests that quite literally anyone can imagine being anything because we know next to nothing about them.

OP: As I've said before, and I will say it again. Merill and Anders are not confirmed companions.

No, its a picture of a man that only slightly resembles Anders next to a bunch of companions.

On a serious note what are the odds Isabela will suggest a threesome in DAII?

This seems odd coming from a marketing person.  If all these threads hurt sales so much you folks could announce all romances and thus segregate them into their own threads and lock the others or you could announce there are no romances and thus have only one thread of fan rage.  But announcing romances and then being silent about them you are inviting speculation because judging from all Bioware forums the romance is a big part for the fans (at least those that post) regardless of how much or little it plays into the overall plot.  Doesn't your MMO even have romances or was I misinformed?

Aveline: If one female LI had to be cut, I'd guess that it would be Aveline since she's clearly the least phyically attractive of the three.

Says you.

I didn't mean it to be mean. I view romances as a feature. And with any feature, if it can be done well and included in the game, the better. The more features a game has, the better as long as they work and work well.

However, no other feature takes up so much mindshare on our forums as romances in our games. Yet, it is a relatively small percentage of players who actually play them (yes I do have stats to back up this claim, but no, I am not sharing them). Dragon Age II is a game filled with many awesome features and romances are just one (or, I accept one feature per romance).

I am also not remotely in charge of whether romances should or should not be included in our games (that is done by Mark, Mike, David, etc). If I am asked for fan feedback on romances, I pass along what you all say about them (pro and con) without my own added opinion which is already known by the Dev team. Maybe I shouldn't have said anythign this time, but it seems each time a name comes up or a character is revealed, it starts a romance thread or discussion. And we eventually end up with "Aww... I wanted to romance X" or "I read someplace that I would be able to romance Y, why was this cut" or similar.

Still, as I said, I 'm not stopping it. I just hope that people are smart enough to temper their expectations until they see actual proof. (And yes I am sure YOU are smart enough person reading this, but not everyone is as history has proven each time we release a game.)

Instead of a text epilogue, the ending will be a celebratory "party" amongst Isabela and the other surviving companions. WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.

Zero.

Hawke will have to be the one to suggest it.  So what are the odds Hawke will suggest it flat out or in some ridiculous innuendo.  Inspect the Siren's Call below decks... Though that line may not work so well with the Siren's Call shattered on a bunch of rocks.

Uh, why? I'm fairly sure I remember my companions suggesting things during my playthroughs of DA:O.

But I have to admit, the imaginary romance threads in this forum are pretty scary.

I haven't seen said picture. I also just think he'd be a silly companion to have, given everything. Oh well, I don't really know anything.

Which led to the creation of my current sig image: I don't know what to support for I don't want to have any disappointment.

Not saying I won't be disappointed should everyone's hope be realized or not, but there it is.

It's a guy who looks vaguely like him, and in some of his epilogues he takes off for a time, so some people are turning optimism into full-blown reality, even though in some games he can also end up dead.

Admittedly it is getting slightly annoying that with every DA2 character released theres a ton of threads about romanceing them even to the point of asking if Hawke's sibling and Flemeth were a romance option (really? I thought both of them were a no without the devs having to spell it out for us), and soon after the romance threads appear everyone starts creating a personality for said character even though all we have is a couple of pictures (and then get annoyed that the character isn't who they thought they'd be from those few pictures)

Don't get me wrong I like the romance features in BioWare games, just the fans can get a tine tiny bit manic about the whole thing at times.

Alright, I understand a bit better. I took your post the wrong way--or, at least, too harshly, so I apologize. I can see that when part of your job revolves around gauging fan reaction and the community, the romance thing can get annoying. And, yeah, I roll my eyes at every Flemeth or Duncan or Zaeed romance thread I see. I still enjoy that part of the game, though, so it probably doesn't annoy me as much as it could.

We fans haven't been given much to speculate on in the first place. You could give us some alpha talent trees to shift the focus to gameplay mechanics.
