I tried to install Mass Effect (1) to my Windows XP PC, but nothing works. I've tried 5 times now, and each time this bedeviled error message pops up about saferun.exe. I finally give up on retry and ignore it, and a new one for saferun.dll pops up. When I ignore that one the installer fails.

I read somewhere it could be an idea to uninstall Daemon tools, so I did that, but to no avail. Two tries since that, and still no joy (and 3 hours of frustration!). I almost know the code by heart now ffs.

I'm trying a workaround posted here, and hope to Dog that will work. I just can't help thinking why the flying hell on wheel must users who legitimately buy PC games have to bend time itself to be able to install them?!?? I'm sure pirates have it a heck of a lot easier. I just got home from xmas and wanted to get in some hours of ME before heading to bed, but instead I can't even get the bleepin' thing installed.

For those who have battled with this, what did you do to get the damn game installed? Did the workaround work?
(I'm trying it, but it does take a lot of time to unpack a zillion rar-files)

I give up. I finally get the damn thing installed using the linked-to method, update to 1.02 and fire up the game. It launches - kinda. Just after the screen where we have to hit another key, the game crashes with a masseffect.exe error. Just in time debugger stuff.

What's the point with games we cannot install (in less than 5 hours and piles of googling), and cannot run?

I'm having the exact same problem. Frustrations galore! I haven't had any luck figuring anything out either.

Seeing as none of you could be bothered filling out a correct problem report, as listed in the thread titled: "How to report a problem with your PC version of Mass Effect 1", dont expect anyone to come rushing to your aid. That thread can be found here;

http://social.biowar...1/index/2012975

Do you honestly think we are mind readers who automatically know what your rig consists of?

As already commented, neither of you seem to have made the choice to take any advantage of the local resources available here.  This forum is for gamers to discuss technical problems in Mass Effect 1 with one another.  Mostly, those will involve the version played on Personal Computers, but there are occasionally tech type things to deal with regarding the Xbox360 version, so all requests for help must always start out identifying whether you have a PC or an Xbox.  You would know that if you were not wearing your sunglasses indoors, and couldn't see the top of the index page.

At the top of the forum are several PINNED message threads, also referred to as "Stickies", and those are for new arrivals to read when they get here.  Also near the top is the forum's own pitiful SEARCH function.  This game is three years old, nearly, in its Xbox release.  The PC version was translated by Demiurge for EA, roughly two years ago.  There are no longer new errors to ask about, really.  Everything that could have happened has had time to have happened now, and is stored away somewhere.

However, the older "Legacy" forums are virtually unusable because they can't be searched as easily.  I suppose the same Google and Yahoo redirection criteria will allow a gamer to point those engines at the Legacy forums, but even here at the Social Forums, we have close to a year's worth of message archives to search through, so let's do that in here before posting a "help me" message, it will be lots faster.

FYI, here is a new guide you could benefit from:  social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/5642862

P. S.  I just ran a Google search of "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=Saferun.exe+error" and it looked like all of the first ten were from either here or the legacy forums.

Not a very friendly tone there, but I will overlook it. As implicitly and explicitly written in my original post I googled quite heavily trying to find any solution, but Google only threw up a couple of threads that gave no clue as to the solution (ie, no solution, just people in my position). Searching on this site I have given up on several times. Nothing sensible is yielded, and it wasn't this time either. Hence why I created the topic.

Here is a summary of my system from PC Wizard:
<<< System Summary >>>
  > Mainboard : Gigabyte 965P-DS3
  > Chipset : Intel P965
  > Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1866MHz
  > Physical Memory : 4096MB (2 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
  > Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
  > Hard Disk : SAMSUNG HD103SJ (1000GB)
  > Hard Disk : Seagate ST3320620AS (320GB)
  > DVD-Rom Drive : _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A
  > Monitor Type : BenQ BenQ V2400Eco - 24 inches
  > Network Card : Marvell Semiconductor (Was: Galileo Technology Yukon 88E8053 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper)
  > Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3 (32-bit)
  > DirectX : Version 9.0c  (mai 2010)

The problem has been described in the first two posts. Installing it normally from the DVDs did not work as I kept running into saferun.exe errors. And unlike written in some help threads, hitting ignore does not work. The message just pops up again, and after the saferun.dll error the installer auto-quits.

Using the manual way did not work either (as linked to in the first post). The install seemed to work, but I never managed to actually play the game. After the loading screen (where I'm to hit a button) the game freezes, just after the picture starts to move a little (right after I hit a button as ordered).

Yes, go ahead and overlook our less than friendly tone. You also managed to overlook the minimum requirements for posting in this forum. We have had to put up with this kind of behaviour from various people for quite some time, so please dont go along and try and lay the onus on others for your shortcomings.

Reading the minimum specs for the game, you would have realised that it requires a dual core running at 2ghz. Yours doesnt meet that spec.

I don't know any more what Phoenix wrote, although Bog was a bit plain-spoken, and sometimes needs to curb his enthusiasm for these games (ME1 / 2).  I thought that I was totally polite.  You didn't attach any problem report as such, didn't include any recent finding from the archives that showed any attempt in that direcdtion, and haven't mentioned the results of running a Clean Boot diagnostic.

That still omits quite a lot.  Let's see what isn't named

Processor Manufacturer:  Intel
Processor Name / Type:  dual core / quad, etc.
Video (GPU) Manufacturer:  Nvidia
Video Card Driver Version:  Nforce ??.??
. . (please use the numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Driver Version and date:
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

That VGA was sold in a couple of different VRAM configurations.  www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

(128, 256, and 512) It also has a minimum 400 Watt PSU requirement with either 256 or 512 MBs of VRAM

Keep trying.

C2D has two cores. It's obvious.

Video card stats:

Other information still needs to be provided.

The guys tend to get a bit frustrated when people don't read the stickies and stress manifests in being short with people. Unfortunately people omit important data needed to help them a lot resulting in frustration (Sometimes i worry for Goraths blood pressure when it comes to Intel Graphics :D)

People on here are gamers and want other gamers to be able to play games. But nobody can do that without the required data needed to analyse the problem.

I can understand that not every single person in the history of this site have always written up a detailed report of every single hardware, driver and software in their machine upon making a thread with a problem installing the game. But no reason to let that long-term frustration out on other users. I came here hoping to find help, and instead I get underhanded irritation thrown in my face. Not very friendly I have to say. Surely you can understand it's very frustrating to spend 6 (!) hours trying to install a game I have bought?

I thought I mentioned in the first post this was a RE-install, but now I see I did not. Anyway, there is nothing wrong with the specs. I've run this game fine before, finishing both this and ME2. But now the game could not be installed.

Thankfully I figured out the problem myself, and in fairness it was impossible for you to know, no matter how many essays I wrote about my specs. I remembered trying to copy a DVD movie some months back, sought help on a forum for such matters, and after some people analysing some log files I provided they thought my DVD writer could be on the verge of kicking the bucket. Since it was rather old and new ones are cheap as chips now, I went and bought a new one today. And thankfully the game installed now, and it worked to load some savegames too.

I appreciate users trying to help me, but I do recommend you trying to be more friendly in the future. It's not fun for an already frustrated user coming here seeking help, and then getting petty underhanded comments, implying we can't be bothered to do anything, or are incapable of reading. Not everybody knows every nook and cranny of this site and the procedures to get help. Most simply want to get help, and are very frustrated due to this hellhole of an invention called DRM punishing legitimate users and treating us like criminals. People not implying we are lazy idiots would help making the forum more friendly and the frustrating experience for us less frustrating. Please try to be less pedantic and condescending in the future. It will make it better for all parties.

Oh, and btw, using the "latest" graphics driver for 7900 GS (260.99 atm) is not a good idea with ME1. At least not on my setup (I've heard new Nvidia drivers do not go well together with old cards). The faces had horrible graphical distortions. I reverted back to 197.45 and everything looked good again.
