Hey there,

This is my first post, so I won't try to act like I know anything about this forum. On to my problem; it's a problem that I haven't been able to find any posts about, and haven't had any luck in trying to solve it myself.

The problem is, on recruiting Jack at Purgatory, I get to the part where you unfreeze her, and proceed into the hallway that's full of alarm lights. Once I walk into the first destroyed room, where you first fight the escaped convicts, soldiers, and the Heavy Mech, all the music stops and most of the ambient noise stops as a small little green symbol with the words, "Loading" appears. It will hang for about 10 minutes, before the ambient noise comes back on, and the music restarts, but the screen will just be stuck, and I'm forced to end the process with Task Manager.

I've tried verifying the game integrity, I've tried putting it windowed mode, I've tryed lowering the resolution, and I've tried restarting the mission. None of which has worked.

Just so you know; I've had to reinstall it before this new character I'm using. I bought the steam version, and the first time I played it, I'd get on the new Normandy for the first time, and after the cutscene, all audio would begin to cut out, and it would freeze and crash. It also wouldn't let me open up any thing in the pause menu.

My specs are well above the recommended requirements. One other thing; I have every bit of DLC.

I hope you can help me with this, because I REALLY want to continue playing. :crying:

Thanks.

We can only take your word for it that your system meets or exceeds the required specs.
Fill out a correct fault report as per the "Read First" thread, and then we may be able to help you.

Edit: It seems that you havent registered your copy of the game on the forums. As such, we can only assume you are running a pirated version. If its legit, register it. If its a pirate copy, go away.

Alright, I registered my game. I just didn't think it was a necessity, and I think it's sorta sad that you have to register your game if you want someone's help. It sends a cold, and rather un-trusting message. So, I hope that me registering my game has settled your jump to conclusion. Besides, it's reasonable for someone who JUST bought the game on Steam to haven't already registered their game. I even have ME1, and I have both ME1 and ME2 on the 360, and I intend on purchasing it for the PS3 once it's available. Sorry if I've offended you, but it's just that I only recently purchases this for the PC. Plus; I purchased every DLC for Mass Effect 2, and I don't know if that would've helped any, but if it did, you could've used it as evidence enough.

Again, sorry if I've offended you in anyway.

Now that that's out of the way, I guess I should just give you my system specs, since I've already explained my problem to fullest details.

First of all, my version is a Digital Copy, purchased off of steam.

Now, onto the specs:
OS: Windows 7
GPU: GeForce 9800 GT
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 4GB
I have all the latest drivers for everything, and I have the latest version of DirectX.

I hope this helps.

Think of it from our side. You could be running a dodgy, pirate copy, full of bugs, spyware, and gods know what else. For us to help, its what we like to call essential information. There was one poster in the ME1 forums who had all these weird and wonderful problems, and it turned out they were running a pirate copy, which they later admitted to after another forumite recognised the type of bugs as being inherant in a pirate copy.

Now, a couple of things to try;

1) Install DirectX9.0c. This is essential to ME2. It can run with 10 or 11, but will encounter some problems along the line. Download it from MS website. Dont worry about it screwing up DX for other games, as Win7 can run both 9.0c and 10/11 side by side without problems.

2) Try another save. It could be a corruption to that particular save game file thats causing the problem

3) Rollback your video drivers a revision or two. Some of the newer drivers can cause more problems than fixes.

Questions;

a) How much free space on your hard drive? Could be the windows swap file is runnnig out of room and thats causing the glitch.

B) Are you on a laptop, using a cut-down version of the 9800 chipset, or you have a desktop with the full-spec hardware?

Very true, sir, very true. I don't blame you, actually; there's too much of that crap going on nowadays, you can never be too careful.

As answers to your questions;

a)Well, this problem started before my current free space, and it was running fine before it started glitching out, but at the moment; I have 20 GBs, but I plan to free up some space soon.

b)No, I'm on a desktop with the full-spec hardware.

Now, about your suggestions;

1) If I'm not mistaken, ME2 did this upon install, so I wouldn't need to reinstall.

2)Well, I've tried reloading a save in Purgatory before, but I just tried loading a save from before I'd even recruited a single squad member, and it still did the same exact thing.

3)Meh, I doubt it's that, since everything was working perfectly fine before. Plus, I get no problems with any other games, including UE3 games.

This is a very mysterious bug.

All games are different and have different requirements. The latest Nvidia drivers have caused havoc with some peoples gaming experience and has been reflected by peoples complaints on here,Being that you have a fairly old card and the latest drivers can effect older cards i would imagine you could be effected. If you feel you know better then why are you asking for help? At least try what is suggested or don't ask for help at all.  ~Moondoggie~

This is a very mysterious bug.

I agree, very mysterious. Game intergrity seems fine according to the Steam checking system, another save file recreates the problem, other U3 games appear fine, although ME2 uses a modded version of the U3 engine (more like U3.5).

If you have modded the game for any reason, extra creds, resources, different weapons setup for classes, try restoring the coalesced.ini back to its original state. If you havent modded, ignore this part of my ramblings.

Did this start occuring soon after getting the Shadow Broker DLC? If so, try disabling Motion Blur in the graphics settings, as some people have experienced weird problems after installing SB, and disabling motion blur seems to fix it for them.

If that doesnt work, I would also ask that you humour me and try reinstalling DX9.0c, just in case the Steam version didnt load it, or load it correctly. I know its a bit of a hassle, but I would rather you accuse me of wasting 20 minutes of your time, than to find out after much wailing and gnashing of teeth, that it was DX all along.

The only other thing I can think of being a cause for the problem is possibly a bad sector or three on your HDD where that particular set of files is installed to. Unlikely, but its possible.

PS: No offence was taken at any time. I understand your frustrations, and you took my "demands" far more calmly and rationally than most. For that sir, I'll keep pondering away at the problem. Touch harder to do when i dont have the kit in front of me to tinker with, but thats never stopped me before.

Well, it actually has started after installed DLC. I bought and installed all the DLC at once, so it would be near hard to distinguish the exact DLC. But, I will however, try your suggestion of turning motion blur off.

If that fails, I'll try reinstalling DX9.0c, as requested.

And, thank you for helping. :P

Damn. Reinstalled DX9.0c didn't work either. Sigh, this problem is starting to seem more and more hopeless than ever.

Hope we can resolve this once you're awake.

Dont suppose you have Xfire installed? If so, strip it out and see how that goes. Thats another package that causes some problems for some people.

Can you skip that mission for now and continue on with other things, and you get the same problem elsewhere? If you're trying to get her so you can activate the Horizon mission, you dont need to, as it goes by level attained, rather than sqauddies gained. Try running off and do Zaeed's loyalty mission if you have him. Or do 4 or 5 small random missions to build up your XP to level and thus activate Horizon. Same fault appear elsewhere?

Are you running EAX? Whats the make & model of your sounds device?

Unfortunately, we now seem to be getting to the point of time consuming fixes. Is your hard drive partitioned intop multple logical drives, or is it the one big volume? If partitioned, see if you can install it to a different drive designation, as it may be bad sectors on the area of the drive where it has been installed to. This might explain your initial problems with first installtion (normandy crashing), and current problem.

Lately, it seems that when I make this suggestion, it's not being followed stringently, so unless you will actually pay attention to the way that Microsoft writes their tutorial, don't bother with it.  Many modern games are very sensitive to particular programs that are loaded as background processes, and the wise game player cuts back on all such items.

Xfire has been mentioned.  Add both MacAfee and Nortons AV programs as being problematic, and several programs that Asus includes with its audio and video cards.  The right way to eliminate whichever are the current conflicts is the Clean Boot, and Microsoft has a separate tutorial page for each of its Windows versions.  I use W2K commonly for 'net activity, so I will look that one up here, just as an example:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281770

Incidentally, use the Black Viper web site as the reference site to determine which of Windows' own services are necessary, and which are a waste of space.

@Alexander: This is the PC support forum, as such, most of us wont have any idea of how to work out a fix for the Xbox, as it is a proprietry, cut-down, wannabee PC with all the processing power of a pocket calculator. Try posting in the appropriate forum.

Sorry guys, I didn't notice that it was a pc forum because I only caught a glimpse of the forum title on the side of the main site page.  My mistake.   I'm not a console fanboy and I seriously meant no disrespect to pc gamers.

Peace.

Alright.

Well, first of all, no I don't have xfire, and the thing is; I can't leave Purgatory unless I reload the save that's before I'd recruited anyone. But the weird thing is; when I do that, nothing seems to be malfunctioning. It only seems to lock up on that specific part in Purgatory.

As for the make and model of my sounds device, I have no idea. If you could give an insight as to how to discover this, I will pursue it further.

As for my hard drive: unfortunately, I wish it were that simple, but no, it's one big volume.

To Gorath Alpha: according the my processes tab, the only background programs running whilst playing ME2, are Steam, Avast, and windows necessary programs, programs that are essential to actually running Windows 7.

To discover the audio device, fire up the ME2 launcher, and select configure.

On the left side of that screen, select Sound under the System heading, and it should list the audio device in there.

Now, under the Mass Effect 2 menu thats above the System menu, you will see 2 settings, one for Video, and another for Audio.

Try it with sounds disabled (audio off). If it still hangs, then that rules out an audio config problem. If it works, then we know its a problem with how your system is processing the multiple sounds being generated in that part of the mission.

Video: We've tried Motion Blur, and that didnt work, try disabling all of the other settings and giving it a try. Make sure you scribble down what the settings were before you start tinkering. If that works, try again, enabling one setting at a time until we find the culprit.

Alright:

Sound Devices: Speakers (4-Logitech USB Headset)

Vendor: Microsoft

Driver: USBAUDIO.sys [6.1.7600.16385]

I knew this, I don't know why I didn't tell you. I guess I thought you meant the sound card. x3

I'll try it with the audio off now.
