yeah I never picked the option to punch the reporter no matter what gender Shep I'm playing.. it's juvenile and the running joke of this woman getting assaulted is honestly a bit off-putting. I always just beat her down with words both as paragon and renegade, it's much more satisfying to expose her arguments as false then to look like her mere words were enough to make Shep loose his/her cool and punch her.

And I find the 'she deserved it' sentiment highly worrying. She does not deserve to be physically assaulted just because she may hurt your precious feelings or say things you don't like or for being untruthful and manipulative.

Exactly. It just makes no sense for a male Shepard to do it. Though pretty much a fem Shepard would be in the same boat in the punishment line. I still think it worse for a man to hit a woman. I guess I'm old-fashioned. Image IPB

You're not old-fashioned; you're open-minded.

It makes sense for FemShep to hit her, but ManShep? No, thank you. That's too much.

If MaleShep can't hit her because she's female, then females don't belong on the front lines of war. Simple.

I think its hillarious the way everyone treats her. When she starts throwing out the (sometimes not even) thinly veiled insults and the rather obvious contempt, its hard to not want to hit people like that. Imagine if you come back from a war and some reporter calls you a baby killer, camera or no, she is gonna be sitting on the ground with a bloody nose.

Or you suck it up and walk away because you've been through faaaaar worse then some mean words from a reporter. You've taken down mecha-cthulu and a tabloid reporter gets the better of you?
Just because you want to hit someone doesn't give you the right to do it

Open minded? LoL

He's hypocritical to the max, and so are you. Equality when it pleases and only then.

If we're holding up and arguing the fictional universe of Mass effect to our own with its values and standards, then female shepards wouldn't even exsist, amongst other things.

off topic but, the current women in millitaries around the world would like a word with you. They exist.

Seriously, though, um, I think there is a whole philosophy behind this, like innumerable other instances in Mass Effect. So yeah, it's not something you'd resolve in a couple of posts.

So you would laugh as your sister got punched by a much bigger man just because she might have deserved it?

Like I said, I'd be reacting just the same regardless of the gender of the person she was punched by.

Yeah, prohibited from frontline infantry combat roles. You will not find a female in the special forces for instance, of which Shepard belongs.

Just wanted to say: Women are increasingly gaining higher positions over the years. In a 175-year time, don't be surprised if a woman becomes the next Erich Hartmann.

And I'd totally approve. It's about time. I was merely pointing out the flaw in applying current standards and values to a fictional universe, one that's ~200 years more advanced at that.

Yup, in my opinion, FemShep makes perfect sense, considering the circumstances and context of the whole thing. If, say, Red Dead Redemption (1910) had a female protagonist, that would be laughable.

Why? Men and women are equal aren't they? What happened to equality?

Assuming you want to take the whole thing seriously, as has been stated, equality only when it suits you.

If it's okay for femshep to hit her but not for manshep, it's hypocritical. Period. Double-standard. There's no getting around it, regardless of moral high ground.

Fortunately, it's not supposed to be okay. In fact, all it's really supposed to be, is a simple running gag that started in ME1.

Quit getting your collective panties(or man-panties)in a bunch. It's a gag, in a video game.

Yeah I suppose your right, who cares if she insults the men and women who bravely give their lives and makes their sacrifices seem trivial and unimportant. Present the same situation to any real life returning servicemen and I guarantee that the reporter, even if it were a woman, would be on the ground in a heartbeat.

If she is hiding behind her gender in order to insult people without fear of reprisal, then she deserves to be hit.

I think it is unnecessary. The first time i played I did it and was horrified when I realized what I'd done. Males are heavier and stronger than females--they shouldn't be necessarily treated, in a kinetically physical sense, the same way a guy will treat another guy. A soldier should NEVER punch a civilian because they have bad things to say about them. It's silly, petty, stupid, and very ignorant. There would be enormous repercussions I think what's-her-name is an idiot. But she shouldn't be punched--sucker-punched--by someone who can charge at a Yahg and live.

No, the average man is stronger, faster, tougher, and more techinally proficient than the average woman. We can't hit them. It's not right. At least I think that's what the OP's point is.

Regardless.  I'm glad we are still given the option to punch her.  At least very least it gives us a chance to roleplay our shepard the way we want and not pigeonhole everyone into making the same approach.

Agreed. I may not like it but it does add depth. It's an example of what makes this game so awesome: choices.
