A Champion would pretty much be the strongest person of a country, which I asume is an honour.
And when some people where knighted, they gained a title and lands. And since Hawke is knighted Champion (if that is how you'd describe it) I just asumed (s)he would gain lands as well.

Since the Free Marches aren't feudal, I seriously doubt this--there's a good possibility that the Viscount (or whoever) doesn't have lands to give away like this.  It is a good deal more probable that Hawke becomes "Champion" by popular acclaim of some kind.  The title *may* be formally bestowed as recognition, but it is more like being named MVP.

I think there is always a war going on in the Free Marches as I understand it, they only unite when they need to, like when a Blight starts.

But I suppose you're right, we don't now how much land around Kirkwall is owned by the Viscount.
Still, a small chance is still a chance.

There's not permanent war in the Free Marches, it's just a loose network of city-states. Like ancient Greece. Well, without all the wars. Errr.

I know.
I meant that the city states battled amongst themselves,a lot.

Well I'm just saying based on the descriptions I've read of the Free Marches (which are limited to the codex in DAO) it doesn't seem like there are active hostilities between the city-states, not even slow-burning ones. Kirkwall minds Kirkwall's business, other city-states mind their own business, and that's how all Free Marchers prefer it.

Didn't Nathaniel Howe, in Dragon Age:Origins-Awakening, say that he spend some years fighting in the Free Marches (Kirkwall even). So I assume there are some wars going on.

From the way I see it Hawke will fight of the Qunari invasion in Kirkwall ------> Become the Champion of Kirkwall ------> Unite the City States of Free Marches (or force your rule over City States) to combat the rest of the invasion -----> Beat Qunari in a very short time ----> Those accomplishments make him famous throughout whole of Thedas -----> The Chantry fears a mage uprising since Hawke is a mage (if not then his relation to Bethany Hawke will substitute) , prevented Qunari from invading whole of Thedas (which they failed at, resulting in a long bloody war) and has United Free Marches under his control so they declare him (or Beth) an Abomination and a great danger to every nation ------> This leads to the mage uprising with Flemeth leading mage armies for Hawke ------> All nations in Thedas listen to the chantry out of fear and are getting ready to attack Free Marches but... -----> With help from Flemeth Hawke finds indisputable evidence against the Chantry and releases it worldwide everyone is shocked and furious and instead of going against Free Marches they aim their forces against the chantry which ends up in ruins -----> Hawke disappears leaving someone else in charge for sometime and Cassandra's search for him begins and Flemeth's plan for a great change is fulfilled.

Champion of Krikwall, Leader of United Free Marches, Vanquisher of the Qunari, King of all Mages, Destroyer of the Chantry, - this is how high the Rise to Power will be.

EDIT: Some typos corrected :bandit:

A small part of me is still hoping that Hawke is a "mage" regardless of his class, with fighters and rogues simply having chosen not to develop their talent beyond "resistance to possession". It would also allow for an "arcane" spec. for both classes, though significantly differing from the mage class.

I doubt Hawke's is a mage regardless of class that would be weird...
So I agree with Tama here, it is either because of your relation with Bethany, or because the Hawke's are a long line of mages, or both.

I heard somewhere that after certain time skips Hawke gains better default weapons and armour.

Do you think that the higher Hawke gets in social standing (you know becoming Champion and all) the better the armour is? I know that sounds logical, but I mean will you see it become higher quality?

Like start out with simple armour, and later gain some gold armour with several ornaments and all.

"Rise to Power" is an innuendo. They finally took notice of how popular romances are, and the devs will soon reveal the true plot of Dragon Age 2: Erotic Origins.

With all the people talking about romance, and how sex scenes should be better I wouldn't be suprised...

But back on topic.
Do you think that Hawke will gain different estates through out the game?
I heard a rumour that he will live with his mother and siblings in the beginning, so I hope he at least moves out there.

In one way or another, I think Hawke is going to end up unifying various city-states of the Free Marches into a single nation. He's going to be the Calenhad of the Free Marches.

I have thought about this too.
And I hope your right, let's hope Hawke becomes the Calenhad of the Free Marches and king as well.

I think he unites the Free Marches anyway, though I don't know if they remain united.
I mean they have been united before, to fight a war between Orlais, and to fight Blights.

Well, although I'd like the idea, I don't think this would happen. First, to unite the Free Marches you have to conquer the Free Marches (as Calenhad had done with the teyrins); even if he becames the king by saving the Free Marches form the qunari, he have to go to the other cities to save them. The skip time should help in this case, but imho DA2 will based itself in a different plot. Remember that we know that Hawke is the Champion of Kirkwall, but we don't know how and who named him Champion. I believe we are going to have the possibility to side in different factions, whoever they are.... don't think you could rule easily the Free Marches if you side with, for example, the mages in Kirkwall; I'm quite sure the Chantry will try to stop you first.

They've been unitied before, but it has been united in the sense that they all allied with each other to fight a common enemy, sort of how most of the Greek city-states banded together to fight the Persians, but often warred amongst each other when there was no external threat. It is a loose and temporary unification and they were allies, rather than a single nation.

I think Hawke is going to achieve something more permanent, with the various city-states being unified under the banner of a common monarch.

Hawke wouldn't necessarily have to conquer other city-states. If the Qunari are invading, as many speculate, the various city-states may look for a strong man to unify them and drive out the invader. It has occasionally happened to divided nations in times of crisis, and when faced with external threats. The ancient Gauls for example unified under Vercingetorix and acknowledged him king, in an effort to present a unified front to drive out Caesar and the Romans. Unfortunately for the Gauls Caesar was a genius and they were defeated, but if they had succeeded in driving the Romans out, Caesar may have forced the Gauls to do something they previously had not been able to do themselves: unify permanently under a single banner.

*If* Hawke does become monarch though I imagine they'll be several different endings dealing with whether or not he was a tyrant or a just king, or something in between. And I'm sure the various decisions you make regarding all the different factions would effect whether the Chantry was strengthened or weakened, whether apostate mages have more freedom, ect.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong and Hawke doesn't unify the Free Marches at all.

Either way I can't wait to play and find out. Image IPB

Isn't that why Cassandra wants Hawke?

Maybe it's a peasant uprising. Title and lands would be irrelevant in that case--just let the heads of aristocrats roll.

Hawke is a noble anyway through his mother.

Forget Champion, that's a bit lame; I want to be Arl. If I wasn't bound to Kirkwall, I'd say King of the Free Marches. The wikia states that the Free Marches is a land of 'independent city-states'; I would like to be an Arthurian character who unites them under one banner. I say King of 'the Free Marches' for want of a better word, as they obviously wouldn't be 'Free' then.

Despite the fact, that is reasonable to take the side of the mages, could it be possible to form an alliance with the Chantry?

I think "champion" implies that the future epic Hawke isn't the ruler of Kirkwall but rather the....person who gets their instructions translated into reality and takes care of the practical side of things like leading the militant forces into battle, and probably played a very instrumental role in getting that ruler (chantry or mage or qunari, perhaps?) into power in the first place...

Well in DA:O you are mostly just a guy that kills darkspawn. You can earn titles etc. but you are not really executing this power. The only power you possess is to say 'I am a Grey Warden, I need help with the Blight/Darkspawn'.

What intersts me more is how this power plays out in the game, as in can you change things with it and if and how politics play out due to your 'power'. I could care less if the title is 'Guard Captain' or 'High King of Thedas'.

I think it is, from what I understand they are the two major factions in DA 2.
At least I saw a drawing of an elven mage with a 3 headed dragon staff facing a Templar looking woman.
You can find it on this thread: http://social.biowar...1/index/5596586

I guess that in Kirkwall there will be an equivalent to the Landsmeet from Ferelden. While Hawke has other kinship in town, he’ll have some family supporters. So the qunari invasion is a perfect opportunity IMO to call the Kirkwall-Landsmeet, and after debating what to do they will send Hawk.

After saving Redcliffe, the Grey Warden becomes also a Champion, don’t forget  Image IPB.

So this will be one important stepping stone to rise to power for Hawke and I think he will be in no adviser position.

*spoiler*
I´m not sure in which way the discovery in the Deep Roads will help Hawk.
