In one way or another, I think Hawke is going to end up unifying various city-states of the Free Marches into a single nation. He's going to be the Calenhad of the Free Marches.
I have thought about this too.
And I hope your right, let's hope Hawke becomes the Calenhad of the Free Marches and king as well.
I think he unites the Free Marches anyway, though I don't know if they remain united.
I mean they have been united before, to fight a war between Orlais, and to fight Blights.
They've been unitied before, but it has been united in the sense that they all allied with each other to fight a common enemy, sort of how most of the Greek city-states banded together to fight the Persians, but often warred amongst each other when there was no external threat. It is a loose and temporary unification and they were allies, rather than a single nation.
I think Hawke is going to achieve something more permanent, with the various city-states being unified under the banner of a common monarch.
Well, although I'd like the idea, I don't think this would happen. First, to unite the Free Marches you have to conquer the Free Marches (as Calenhad had done with the teyrins); even if he becames the king by saving the Free Marches form the qunari, he have to go to the other cities to save them. The skip time should help in this case, but imho DA2 will based itself in a different plot. Remember that we know that Hawke is the Champion of Kirkwall, but we don't know how and who named him Champion. I believe we are going to have the possibility to side in different factions, whoever they are.... don't think you could rule easily the Free Marches if you side with, for example, the mages in Kirkwall; I'm quite sure the Chantry will try to stop you first.
Hawke wouldn't necessarily have to conquer other city-states. If the Qunari are invading, as many speculate, the various city-states may look for a strong man to unify them and drive out the invader. It has occasionally happened to divided nations in times of crisis, and when faced with external threats. The ancient Gauls for example unified under Vercingetorix and acknowledged him king, in an effort to present a unified front to drive out Caesar and the Romans. Unfortunately for the Gauls Caesar was a genius and they were defeated, but if they had succeeded in driving the Romans out, Caesar may have forced the Gauls to do something they previously had not been able to do themselves: unify permanently under a single banner.
*If* Hawke does become monarch though I imagine they'll be several different endings dealing with whether or not he was a tyrant or a just king, or something in between. And I'm sure the various decisions you make regarding all the different factions would effect whether the Chantry was strengthened or weakened, whether apostate mages have more freedom, ect.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong and Hawke doesn't unify the Free Marches at all.
Either way I can't wait to play and find out.
