I loved both of them. They both had their flaws, and i understand that no game can be perfect. Fortunately, i'm an avid fan of both RPG and shooter, so its cool ;).

I think a LOT more people are fans of both genres than a lot of posters seem to think there are. I prefer ME 2, but I most certainly appreciate both genres.

I'm tired of saying ME1's plot was better and ME2's characters were better. So I'll just say this.

ME1 made sense. Lord, it made sense. I want that feeling back.

Both games are fantastic!!! Both stories are great!

Speaking of other things...

In ME 1 I like almost everything. But there were some things I even didn't use. For example weapons and armor. When I played ME1 for the first time I didn't even change my armor or I didn't modified any of my guns.

In ME 2 there were many changes. And I like new guns and armor. But here it's impossible to put off a weapon untill all enemies go down. Also there are no comments from the teammates during the missions. Well, they are but only in certain places. Not always like in ME1. And of course what makes me annoyed is a lot of auto dialogue!

Well, that's what I think...

Good god why do people insist on making threads like this? Its basically bait in the water to throw the "true fans(ME1)" into a fight with the "ME2 fans".(and for the record we already have "true fans" like tonnactus insulting anyone that thinks ME2 is good)

On a serious note:

I liked both, i preferred some stuff in ME1 and some in ME2. Overall each game had their merits and flaws.

I actually made the thread because I was curious on what the Bioware community thought. I know almost every review I have ever read said that ME2 was far better than ME1. I personnaly like ME1 better, although I still love me2. I had no secret motives to casue a fight between ME1 fans and ME2 fans. As a matter of fact, this thread is on page 4 and there hasn't been much warring going on at all.

I think they are both great games but I like ME1 better. The lack of customization in 2 is a major turn off but it has a number of good points. More romance options in 2 is a good example. Character advancement and weapon selection in 2 was horrible. More heavy weapons but as far as weaponary that was it. They both had great storylines but 2's load and mission complete screens gave it a feel of less immersion and the exploration side of the game sucked.  Mission Complete screens DO NOT belong in a roleplaying game!

You will get people who love ME1 more, you will get people who think ME2 is superior.  And you will get people who like features of either, and their favourite of either happens to depend on their mood.

I like me1 better, besides graphics and combat that's it. I hate you can't do armor or the ammo and I hate the missions, I want them to be longer and more exploring.

ME2 it had better companions, and had replay value. ME1 after the first playthrough is not fun.

I, sadly, have yet to play ME2, although that will SOON be fixed!

But my friend is one of those few who prefer ME1 to ME2. He said the story was too linear and didn't like the fact it was all about finding teammates.

ME1 for sure. it was so much more of an RPG and was so much more replayable (did 17 playthroughs doing my 18th right now lol) plus the story was just plain amazing. ME2 improved the combat and graphics but that was it. i hate most of the new team, i hate no customization, i hate no helmet toggle, and most of all, i hate the complete lack of exploration. a single uncharted world from ME1 is alone larger than the whole ME2 map, which is sad. im sorry bioware felt it needed to sell out to the fps crowd, because it almost ruined the series for me.

ME2 is better, but not so big an improvement that it renders ME1 unplayable. So what's the point of this? You ought to play both anyway.

Yeah, this has never been discussed before, and I'm sure it will spark an awesome enthralling debate. Lots of people will open their eyes and be forever changed.

Why is this thread still alive?

I felt that ME1 had more memorable scenes, like when speaking to Vigil on Ilos, dropping the nuke on Virmire, etc. It also felt like the story was more focused on the actual problem, rather than building a squad. Despite that, I really, REALLY loved the squaddies in ME2 more than I did in ME1 by a long shot. To add on to that, ME2 had a more in-depth interaction with squad memebers, a better control system and got rid of that dreaded Mako. The renegade and paragon interrupts were also a superb addition to the game.

But it doesn't have Wrex. >:[

So, it's not that either game was superior to one another, its more of the fact that each game has it's own strength and weaknesses. I like both games, but I felt that ME1 had a better story, and ME2 had better characters and subplots.

I think most people here would generally agree that the ideal Mass Effect game lies somewhere in-between both current Mass Effect titles, and that the best thing for ME3 to do and be is to try and take the strengths of both and weaknesses of neither and be kind of a hybrid of both, while also bringing a few new ideas to the table.

I agree with you.

So, in the end Bioware has to deside what those strenght and  weakness are based what Bioware wants from they game. Bioware can use all our given opinions and feedbacks, even if some of it is very conflicting between us all. Our opinions and feedback aren't getting any better anymore, because we have allready repeated same stuff for months here in past year.

It's obvious what kind of care ME was given and what care ME2 was given.  From codex to dialogue to planet descriptions to resources received from planets...everything is pretty much consistent in ME.  The same can't be said of ME2 where dialogue from one character states one thing while the codex and an npc state something else entirely or where resources can be obtained from a planet despite the planet's description.

Animation shines and loses its luster in both games.  Though I deal with it it still boggles my mind that the movement animation for Shepard was left the way it was in ME2.  In ME male Shepard had a different walk from female Shepard.  Female Shepard moved like a woman.  It's a subtle nuance that I approved of.  In ME walk ahead of your squadmates after you tell them to follow you and you'll see the movement animation is smooth.  This is not so in ME2.  I've said that squadmates appear to do the can-can when they follow you.  It's jerky and initially pulled me out of the game.

The speech animation in ME2, however, is much improved over ME.  Mouth movements are great.  It has that fluidity that if they really made as close as possible to looking real without actually trying and giving us that off-setting quality.  And a bit of an aside with speech...male Shepard does better than he did before, but it seems only when certain dialogue choices are made.  Female Shepard sounds like she's trying to evoke her masculine side which I wish didn't happen.  I very much like the female Shepard vocalization from ME as it made me think this is a woman in the military and not a woman in the military who feels she needs to act like the men to get respect as I feel is the case in ME2.

Combat in ME2 is better.  No matter how many times the so-called "haters" make that statement it gets lost as though between the time you were given a printed note it underwent some radical change to make it something the receiver gets up in arms about.  That said, I don't have a problem with combat in ME mainly because of versatility.  I able to do more in ME than I'm able to do in ME2.  In ME I'm able to use weapons that the game says I shouldn't use and I can still get satisfactory results for all but one in various areas.

The story in ME is more cohesive than it is in ME2.  Where people are complaining about having to do optional side quests in ME undermining the urgency of the main mission, in ME2 I'm almost encouraged to do side missions because the main mission (while urgent) isn't urgent enough for me to forget about having to obtain resources to upgrade my ship or gear or tend to the wants of my crew.  Also on the topic of story is that the intermediary between the big bad is more fleshed out in ME in comparison to ME2.

Characters are arguably better regarding which side of the fence you're on.  I'm inclined to agree that most are better in ME2, but the development between your Shepard and your crew isn't the same as the development between your Shepard and crew in ME.  In ME your crew obviously talks to each other.  Unfortunately in a game that's regarded as character driven (ME2) this doesn't happen.  There's no cohesion among the crew like there is in ME.  Everyone is compartmentalized or insular and I find that absolutely detrimental to the idea that you have to get a crew together and create a team that will follow you to do what needs to be done.

Overall, I prefer Mass Effect.  Mass Effect had more attention paid to its development than Mass Effect 2 and knowing that it took Mass Effect 4 years to develop and 2 years for Mass Effect 2 I'm inclined to believe it shows.  Considering that Mass Effect 3 is being given the same window for development or the recent rumor that  Mass Effect 3 is ready now to go I'm not going to hold my breath about what is to come.

Until we get hard numbers a majority on any side doesn't exist.

Mass Effect 1 had the more dynamic, immediate story. You had to literally save the galaxy, whereas in ME2 you are looking into the disappearance of human colonies.......ME2 had a 'less important' feel to it for these reasons, and the only flaw with an otherwise fantastic game

I love both, ultimately, equally.

ME1 reminds me alot of Battlestar Galactica the MiniSeries. You know, the three hour pilot (if you have it on DVD)?

While Bioware touted ME2 as darker, ME1 just felt darker. It was a race against time, the coloring, everything felt a little dated (which isn't always a bad thing.) It had some seriously boring parts (like the pilot of BSG, I cringe every time the colonials make first contact with the Cylons for example), but it had an awesome beginning, and an awesome end (Virmire into Illos-Citadel)

ME2 for me, felt alot like a TV series. Alot of people hated the mission complete thing, I'll admit, its jarring, but far from a deal breaker, and far from immersion shattering. I interpret it as a report by the Illusive Man, rather then "mission complete." But with those screens, and the way recruitment/loyalty is handled, it feels like an honest to god TV series.

It was also brighter, and a bit more character driven then the pilot (ME1), but the story was also not really advanced except for at the end. (and lets face it, BSG was all character driven in Season 1, after the plot driven pilot. Season 1 only advanced the -story- towards the end of the first 13 episodes when they found Kobol)

So thats how I liken ME1 and ME2. Both are good, both have some flaws, but together, both are incredibly awesome.
