ME1 Playthroughs=14(so far)
ME2 Playthroughs=11(so far)
ME1 to me has a superior story. It was the better "experience" in my opinion.
ME2 to me has superior gameplay. It was the better "game" in my opinion.
But, I still had more fun with ME1.
It had a good mix of RPG and Shooter. It just needed the ME2 gameplay and it would've been even more amazing.
A few touches here and there for its few flaws and it would've been perfect.
I hope to God(and mostly Bioware) that this is the approach they are taking on ME3, as I'm hoping to not be severely and sorely disappointed in the last act of the trilogy.
At this point, in my opinion at least, ME1>ME2.
ME2 did feel a bit "dumbed down", but just using those words doesn't do it justice.
To convey what I mean, I should say that it didn't feel like it had the depth of story and importance that ME1 had. It didn't have those familiar aspects of an RPG most folks associate RPG's with.
I think ME2 would've been praised even more had it actually had an inventory. Just cleaned up and modified from ME1's.
Modifying guns with specific ammo types and attachments would've also been a familiar RPG aspect that I believe would've been welcomed.
The story focus being more on the characters was an interesting change, but I believe that had the focus been at least a little bit geared more towards the Reaper threat, the story would've been better received.
Also, there were less skills to put points into, and the "1,2,3,4" system was rather odd. I feel that ME1's skill point system was highly superior and it should've been down to the 12 points, each point adding a new bonus. It may be gradual, but working for it is worth it, at least in my opinion.
ME1's levels weren't as linear as ME2's, not by a long shot. For example, Noveria had quite a few ways you could go from Port Hanshan's Dock to Peak 15, and multiple ways to get through Peak 15 to the end of the level(avoiding spoilers here). While in ME2, everything is pretty much following a predetermined path that walks you in a straight line with no room to backtrack, explore, and see the amazing universe for how wide and interesting it is.
ME1's UNC's may of been lacking in variety, but the atmosphere was so much better(in a way). While varied terrain would've been nice, the vistas and look out into outer space was marvelous. Instead, we got N7 missions in ME2, which were beautiful, but completely uninteresting. In ME1, we talked to people to get the UNC missions, whether it was some minor NPC or Admiral Hackett. In ME2, we have no one. We just have to find it ourselves and find our own reasons to care. Especially because the email system is just boring and in my opinion was just a way to get around implementing characters to meet and talk to.
Also, ME1 had very memorable places like the Presidium, and to see it dangling there in our faces but unable to be accessed felt like a shard of ice going through my heart. So many amazing characters and stories on the Presidium, and we couldn't see anything but the Human Ambassador's office.
It just feels like everything was simplified for the sake of new players or a wider audience. Like the lack of giving squadmates new armors, attachments for their guns, or having linear levels, etc etc.
If I had to develop ME3 and make it more like ME1 or ME2, I'd make it more like ME1.
But I won't discount ME2's strong points. Its combat was amazing and its characters were interesting. Still, ME1 had something that ME2 didn't have, and I hope ME3 goes back and brings it to our television screens and computer monitors again.
I hope that was what you were looking for. I tried to be reasonable and get my point across without coming off as a git, idiot, moron, or whatever word flies with you.
