That'd be expected. "Salt tan" - having a dark skin tone due to sun exposure working at the sea - is rather par the course in coastal galician towns.nightcobra8928 wrote...
pretty much.
but now that i think about it, there was a pretty woman that looked almost exactly like isabela, i believe it was in santiago de compostela. she said she was a sailor, a fisherman (fisherwoman?) to be exact and she was staying there for the fireworks XD

Erm. Most of those in positions of authority, well, they're fereldens, in ferelden for one, not sure why that is problematic, but a wide variety of people in the world are ****s of one sort or another. The religions are zealous, the nobles are manipulative, the commoners are backstabbing. Half the people in game are fairly unpleasant, and everyone external to ferelden is viewed as malicious as their isolation is part of the plot. You really have to massage the facts to make it any kind of racial bias. Which I suppose is the point.Ninja Mage wrote...
The only dark skinned people were a Qunari who had murdered men, women and children and was found in a cage, and the Chasind, who are basically like wild barbarians. If you want to add Zevran to the mix, then you have a murderous, assassin as well. All positions of power were held by white, anglo saxon looking people. I think maybe many of the Cultists had dark skin too.

Edit: Well unless there is some creation myth that explains why there are 3 different races and why they look different. Otherwise it would be evolution which requires different enviroments, no?

OT: AlexIV:- Agreed, I'm all for being inclusive, but it has to make sense within the game's lore or it just comes off as tokenism.

Well I don't mind 'asian' or 'african' people in Thedas, but they should origin from overseas. They can be more powerful and more civilized for all I care. It just makes more sense for me then 3 races as different origin from the same small continent. They would have mingled and lost their significant racial features in the last thousand years.
Firstly, we don't know the size of Thedas.
And secondly, they aren't even done with Thedas.
And thirdly, I don't expect anyone to make a fantasy game with primary characters that look like Black people, and asians in fantasy is nothing new. Not in this gen of the generic brown haired, dirty beard having white male protagonist. So making it another island, far, far away is just a subversion of the inital problem of excluding diversity in fantasy. They aren't going to get around to some other island anytime soon, if ever, for that matter.

Thedas is a continent, not the world, and probably not much bigger than europe. There is a map of it too.

Well, you have the Black Company Books. Its protagonists are a band of negroid (forensic term) mercenaries.

First, I didn't call the developers racist. What I'm saying is that it can be perceived as racist (even though I might not have actually said this). Also, diversity isn't some arbitrary quota. It can actually show that we, as humans, can actually recognize that there isn't just one race out there, and that we can recognize them. And if you think I'm being rude, well, that's your opinion and I'll respect it.

I am quite certain the scale of Thedas has never been discussed, because they don't even have a name for the world it's on, and as such we don't know how large Thedas is, comparitively to the world it is on. I don't see how this changes my point..

So you really are claiming to know every neighborhood in Manhattan. Or, perhaps it's that you can't imagine something that is contrary to your experience. The latter is more likely, and is probably a common human trait.

Maybe you're onto something, since Orlesians regard Ferelden as backward, and we know the Qunari have gunpowder and advanced sailing technology. Maybe in a future game we'll see more of the world.

Well, those are books, not games. I haven't read that series, but books tend to have a little more leeway than AAA game series from developers that have to appease the most amount of people possible as to turn a profit. And I don't expect the majority of the gaming public (white, male) to want to be forced to play a minority character, because I don't like to be forced to play a white character when I don't have to. Nothing against white people, but I've played a white character the majority of my gaming life, and not complaining about it hasn't lead to any type of significant change. If anything it's gotten worse.
(Note that I stated before that this does not neccessarily apply to Bioware.)

Creators of any medium of entertainment have to realize that people from all types of backgrounds are their audience, and lessons in equality and diversity are extremely important.
Important to whom? Why does your "stand in" need to belong to your racial group in order for you to identify with them? And if you can't identify with anyone who doesn't look like you, WHO is the racist one, now? It's a game. It's not here to teach you lessons about how to get along with your neighbors. Granted, I prefer to play female characters, but I am TOTALLY sexist--I prefer men. A lot. Short ones, tall ones, fat ones, hairy ones, bring it on.
One of my favorite games of all time (Gothic) contains, IIRC, EXACTLY FIVE WOMEN, and you can't actually talk to any of them. But it's set in a prison work colony, and I found the very male-ness of the game to be kind of cute and refreshing. Aside from that, the *only games I own* where you can't select the ethnicity of your character ALL have Asian protagonists. (Prince of Persias and Jade Empire.)

You can see the 'frozen sea' in the south west corner. And I assume Thedas is located in the southern hemisphere of the planet, which I assume is round just like earth. Which means Thedas is as best 10-15% of the whole surface of the world. Well the part of thedas that is visible on the map anyway. There are no numbers to calculate though. It is just a guess.

No such place exists in Manhattan. You can certainly pretend that everyone in a certain section of Manhattan is white, but, like I said, there would be minorities doing something there, because it's one of the most diverse places on the god damned planet. Which is what made the Friends whitewashed version of the city laughable, and the fact that someone could pretend that such a place exists is comical. His anecdotal evidence of a make believe place with no proof however, is good enough for you. I wonder why?
Note that it took complaints from minorities to have this changed, but white people had no problem with this the 5 seasons it was allowed to occur. White people on average do not complain about whitewashing. Minorities do, and then are told to shut up, or they are racist for seeing it.

You are making a lot of assumptions here. I'd rather wait for a dev to confirm, and they have a lot they can do with the places that are in Thedas that I don't expect them to bother trying to explain away the other races to some mythical continent across the sea.
