Alright so I've done Soldier and Krogan Ally at once by going through with Ashley and Wrex cuz they're my favourite pairing.  Now, I've got 2 more playthroughs to do and I wanted to see what people's opinions are on my mixture of squadmates.  As an Engineer, playing through with Garrus and Liara and once as a Soldier playing through with Tali and Kaiden.

Do those sound like good pairings ??

I'm open to suggestions.

Garrus and Liara should be fine as Liara's biotics can disable a group of enemies easily and Garrus can pick up the slack with his powers. You might have trouble with Tali and Kaidan though I'd recommend focusing on Kaidan's biotics and also Neural Shock and let Tali focus on tech talents (Decryption, Electronics and Hacking).

I ran with Kaidan and Liara on my last playthrough and they're definitely a potent combo IMO. Depends on your own class also, you'll want squadmates that can cover your class's weakness.

Depends on the difficulty. At hard and above, garrus is the most squishy squadmember .

As an engineer, you should rather take wrex and liara. Thats what i did and their conversation regarding the decision about the rachni queen are also worth it(for example)

Again, I've done Krogan ally.......the only reason I'm even considering using the others is for those things because I find everyone just not that great in comparison to Wrex and Ashley

As for Kaiden, sadly you can't get him in the squad as there is no such character in the game.

Kaidan on the other hand...

But seriously, you shall consider a biotic and a raw firepower for the Engineer character, as you will handle the debuffs, locks and field medic duties. It only really matters on Hardcore and above actually, so if you're going for the ally achievements, you can take any pairing.

One thing to keep in mind if you're planning on using Garrus as your tech, is that it takes a pretty substantial investment in first aid to unlock his electronics skill. So you're going to have 16 skill points invested in first aid and electronics before he gets to master overload. He also tends to be a bit squishy until you get him some decent medium armor (another 7 points) .   But since your talking about playing an engineer this should really be an issue.  I'd focus on his assault rifle, armor(to at least 7 for medium armor 8 is better for advanced shield boost)

This may not be an issue, if you're replaying the same character in a new game+ but early in a level 1 playthrough it can have a significant impact.

Tali actually tends to be a bit less squishy than Garrus early due to the fact that she has 2 skills that you'll be leveling early that increase her shields. Namely electronics and quarian mechanic.

For the strory purposes I suggest to pair Garrus with Tali (ME2 fanservice) and Kaidan with Liara (both LIs, and Kaidan seems to have a thing for Liara too)

Wouldn't Garrus and Tali be overkill in the tech department? Same with Kaiden and Liara, they don't seem to offer very much flexibility for whoever you're fighting. I've found the reverse to work better for myself with Garrus/Liara and Tali/Kaiden (Only took that Kaiden to get the achievement) or my favorite is Tali/Liara since between the two of them they offer the greatest flexibility for both Biotic and Tech.

Adept Shepard, Kaidan and Liara was surprisingly durable as a combo. 2 singularities, 2 warps, 3 lifts, 3 throws, 3 stasis' and a Neural Shock made sure I'd have total control of the battlefield.

Again the best combo's depend on the player class.
