okay, I've watched the picture from the magazine right now and there's written: The heart shows hawke and Fenris who can start a romantic conversation. The options for same sex loving were expanded, in the sense of "add on"...sounds like there are more bisexual options than before. But it could also mean the magazine writers didn't play the game very long so that they just assume every conversation with a heart will end up in a relationship.

In my printed magazine pics it looks more like the lightsaber effect, a very pale bright orange tinge and slightly more reddish on the fringes, but definately glowy. There's a small list with the symbols and what they mean and the other symbols have glowy effects as well. It looks a bit different, because they have more structure that a heart shape. the olive twig is black and the green comes from a green light source behind it. the theater mask is black and has a purple light source from the back which gives it its colour. the heart is its own loightsource, hence the paleness in its core and the color on the edges...like a lightsaber.

So if a red heart is angry and passionate a blue heart would be a calm peaceful romance. 

Though I suppose gold could also mean peaceful, nice and calm. 

And red would be reserved for the rivalry mance.

In the M! issue from where I took the screenshot some of you are referring to, there is also a box with six dialogue icons. Both times, the heart seems to shine golden, with a red outline to it. I do not know why the wiki lists the heart as red as that is only the second color.

So could you please give us a list of the symbols meanings? If you still have the magazine?

Ah so flirting is automatically all golden? Great playing a flirty but single Hawke is going to be like jumping through a minefield. 

Why couldn't there have been a flirting option in the demo?

Ah, so I suspect the 'omg different coloured hearts!!! *faints*' episode we've just witnessed was just the most recent in a long line of episodes where we've grabbed the slightest piece of information and totally sped off in a million different directions, none of which were even remotely useful nor accurate

I do love and admire our exuberance, though.

I don't think so. I'm pretty positive you don't pick whether you're in a rivalry or friendship romance. It just depends on which side of the bar you're on.

I'm translating the german translation back to english, so the original can be a bit different:
olive twig: peaceful
theater mask: ironic (probably sarcastic in the original)
judge's hammer: insistent
heart: romantic
3 falling coins: greedy
star: depending on class (probably a different option for each class when this pops up)

Since I know you love-hungry lot can appreciate a little tease: What if the editors of the M! article just cut out the golden-red heart from that very picture with Fenris for their explanatory dialog box while other hearts in-game have a different color :-P?

The mask in the humorous option ISN'T ACTUALLY PURPLE. It glows purple, but the mask itself is black. Most of the symbols are like that. But the black and gold both read as 'neutral' (golden is the color of the text), so the color of the icon is actually described as the color of the glow.

I believe the case is closed

Oh, yeah. Look at that.

I'm not sure what you're saying about the case is closed. The glow might be red, but the heart is golden. Whereas the icon--as you pointed out--is usually black.

Okay, let's face it. Fenris seems to be a bisexual romance option as the heart is shown. It wouldn't make much sense if he wasn't a romance option and the heart is still available. When I just try to flirt with a straight guy it's not necessary to have a heart symbol for it. Plus, the text with "aufgestockt" can actually just mean there are more bi options now. Otherwise the magazine writers would have used the word in a rather wrong way. I'm German and it doesn't make much sense to use this sentence, especially this one word, in a way where only pseudo flirt possibilities are available.

You can flirt with Aveline, but it's not going to get you anywhere. If he doesn't know the difference, then he would be misinformed.

Frankly, this relies on whether or not the reviewer actually romanced one of the men, or simply assumed that the heart icon meant a romance.

It doesn't. You have to remember that the icon means intent, not outcome.
