I keep thinking that there was a bout of templar cruelty or something sometime after Awakening took place. "What?  This is your kitten?" *SQUISH* "Sorry, mages aren't allowed to keep pets."

And then Anders will lament about his poor lost kitty, and we'll miraculously find Ser Pounce-A-Lot alive and well in Kirkwall with no explanation, and then a bonus mission to reunite Anders with the furball will be unlocked.

OFF TOPIC, but my KEEN investigating (command console) skillz have revealed that if you say, "The Maker is a righteous ass" to the chanter then the kid next to him says, "Sometimes we throw pebbles at him. Doesn't work either."

Mystery solved.

It's only later, after realising the kitten survived both a darkspawn attack on the keep, and squish by templar boot, that Ser Pounce-A-Lot has awesome magical powers™.
