There is no marriage between same-gendered people in Thedas.

Didn't stop Zevran from proposing :3

Well he didn't propose to my m!Warden. I thought that was just for females.

Mine was m!Warden, still got the conversation. It was lovely.

I think that was more of a proposal for a commited relationship than for marriage... that's how  I got it at least.

No, this is merely madness.

This explains it in part, and there was an official response to it in some old gay romance thread or topic. It is a purely pragmatical act, concerning estates and specifically offspring, and has no particular connection to love. It is just not something that even exists as a term for partnership between same-gender couples, in Thedas.

that info from the wiki doesn't address same sex marriges... it only says that opposite sex marriages are incouraged.  THat would mean same sex marriage is just less common and a very small percentage...

Zevran proposed to my m!warden... was no problem there

I'd definitely be down for m!Hawke marrying Anders. Assuming that Thedas doesn't have a law forbidding the matrimonial union between a human and an abomination. They obviously can't get married in the chantry. Anders would burn it down and turn it into a bloodfest.

but isn't that the funnest kind of after-party? =D

Sure, but I can imagine how horribly offended Sebastian might be. He's a priest Posted Image and besides, I don't want it to be an "everyone against Anders" affair. Fenris and Merrill probably already hate him.

Like I said, there was an official response, from monsieur Gaider if I recall. And from Zevran, it was an offer of commitement, not one of marriage per se.

Ah well.

Odd that Zev tells a male warden that it's okay to think the earring is a proposal then.

We don't really know how marriage works in Thedas.  Do we?

And Zevran will break up with the male warden if he says "No, [a proposal] is too much."

It is an act of creating a family and settling estates, not of love. And since people of the same gender cannot have children, they cannot marry. There is a difference between commitement and marriage.

Did you check the previous posts at all? It is here and I am trying to find the old discussion that got an official response saying this. Although with my absent-mindedness, I might be wrong, but I am more or less still certain.

If you can find us a developer quote that says "there is no gay marriage in Thedas" then I'm sure everyone would quiet down. As it is, I think the developers have specifically avoided saying this, which seems prudent.

The section on homosexuality says:

"There is pressure to marry an opposite-gendered partner in certain circles, such as the nobility and the City Elves"

which implies that it's possible to marry a same-gendered partner.

Or it can imply that there is a pressure to marry an opposite-gendered partner instead of just pursuing a relationship with a same-gendered person.

I am telling you, there was a discussion over this. And people were disappointed by the response. But I cannot find it for now.

If that's what it meant, it would be worded differently. If they specify "marry an opposite-gendered partner," the tacit acknowledgment is that they could alternately marry a same-gendered partner. Otherwise, "marry" wouldn't be important enough to say, because you can have children without being married. Legitimacy is an issue for nobles, but not for elves.

The relevant response:

David Gaider wrote...

No. Not to get political on the subject, but regardless of my support for the idea of gay marriage in our society I think it would feel pretty anachronistic to include such a concept in our setting. I doubt it's something that would even occur to people in Thedas, regardless of their orientation.

That said, I think it's not something that universally, 100%, under no circumstances ever happened. In the same post, Mr. Gaider points out how Dalish and Dwarven traditions are very different from the Andrastean view on marriage, without going into specifics.
