So somebody has to outright say "Hey, we're a couple. I know it's none of your buisness but there you go."?

Obviously not, but it also wasn't made apparent they were, and there are other ways to do this besides screaming it out to the whole world.

They bickered like an old married couple and it was hinted, they don't need to outright say it. Does it really matter to the Warden if he knows or not?

It does when we are discussing making an s/s couple obvious to the player.

I thought the discussion was about a happy gay couple not existing in game, not about making a gay couple 100% obvious.

Feniris is the gay LI. I'm putting all my money on that. A male bisexual tattooed elf. Man, I'm getting deja vu

Either Herren or Wade could have used a term of endearment that you usually expect from a person in a long-term relationship to make it explicit.

I have said it before, I will say it again, I really don't want Fenris as a LI. I grant that he's going to be an entirely different person than Zevran, but how about getting an elf who ISN'T a sex object - and that goes for my opinion of him for both M/M AND M/F relations. I still want a human warrior to be my M/M love interest.

I feel like that's so as well, but I'd love to be wrong. I'd really like to have a human male to romance as a guy. Either way, Fenris is almost painfully good-looking (I think, anyway), so no complaints from me.

Also, sorry to interrupt the already-in-progress conversation that's happening.

I took the Branka/Hespith relationship as something that had been positive, but was ruined by Branka's obsession. It was a way of personifying what she did to her entire house, not really any kind of indictment of S/S romance.

I don't think this matters...we see only the negative stuff in game.

Also, I don't think people bring this up to point fingers (well, some don't)...it's just an observation on how this could be seen as offensive to someone in the LGBTQ community given that this is one of the only s/s romances that most will see in the context of the entire game.  I'm aware this wasn't intentional nor are the DA writers out to paint homosexuality in a bad light.

I know they don't sit around their writing table and discuss ways they can make homosexuals look bad.  I know they aren't homophobic.  It's merely just a comment on what is there in the game and how it could be perceived.

To continue, I know the last thread was closed b/c people were pointing fingers and blaming BW of 'homophobia' because of this.  I think there are two sides here....those that think BW is out to get homosexuals and those that just want to raise awareness about potential offenses.   BW can hardly be seen as homophobic, as they do usually include s/s romances in game.  I don't see the latter as problematic, though.  It's just inevitible that people will offend and be offended by things...we all do it.  I'm sure I've offended loads of others.  I would hope that if I have offended someone that they would civilly explain the whys as to how that happened so I could change and avoid it in the future, and not resort to name calling or blame.  Therefore, my goal is just to raise awareness of these issues and point them out, but not to resort to name-calling or trying to paint BW and the writers in a negative light.

So you're not a rabble-rouser, you're a rabble-rouser watchguard. It makes sense!

Personally, I wouldn't have dreamt of looking at the Branka/Hespith romance and connecting the unhealthiness of that part of the game with homosexuality. That it was a homosexual relationship seemed like happenstance.

And btw, I had no idea Wade and Herren were a couple until I was told so by a forumite.

Yes, and if the only happy gay couple isn't totally obvious then I say, I want it to be.

Yes.  I try to limit my rabble-rousing.

I'm also concerned if Fenris is the gay option with the "all elves are gay" stereotype. But, because we already had an elf be the s/s option in Origins I doubt that Fenris will be in this one. I think it would be a bit odd to have two bisexual male elves in a row. I agree that a human soldier would  be cool as a gay interest.

About the gay LI thing, I personally don't mind if Fenris is the m/m option as I'm sure the only thing he and Zevran have in common is that they are both elves. I don't think this says all elves are bi.

It's similar to how I don't mind if Isabela is another f/f option...being human and a rogue like Leliana. They are still quite different from one another beyond their class or race. Still, I understand those that want something different.

Herren & Wade may have been a gay couple, but at best it was subtle. If there was anything between Zevran and Taliesin, that seems to be as the same as well.

No getting around Isabela. It'd be ridiculous if she wasn't open to female Hawkes, given DA:O.

I saw nothing subtle about those two, and I loved them to death.

They don't have to say that, but there are other ways to make it more explicit and the in game stuff was still lost on many people.

As hesitant as I am to step foot upon this ground. Why would you want Bio to beat you over the head with a couples gayety? It's not like they would do it with a hetero couple, it seems like their need to shove it in your face would be more offensive. I think they handled Harren and Wade fairly well, it was pretty obvious to me there was something going on between them. I'm a big fan of subtlety in all writing though. As far as "happy" relationships, good luck finding two people on this planet that don't have SOME sort of conflict with one another.

I think it would be fair to say that it wasn't as obvious as Branka and Hespith, as well as the the straight NPC relationships in the game in general. Like Anora and Cailan.

I get what you're saying... but was there a particular example of a happy, positive straight relationship in DAO?

Maybe it's just me, but it seemed like our tragedy was more or less equal-opportunity?

I thought they were pretty realistic really,  televising a relationship isn't something many people do.  It all comes in watching the actions of the couple.  I actually thought it was rather nice to see a same sex couple that was obvious,  but it didn't feel the need to scream it.  It just felt far more authentic to me.     Perhaps it might not  have been as "Empowering" but,  it was really quite real.

I don't believe that anyone is suggesting that they beat the player over the head with it. Do you think they were beating players over the head about Anora and Cailan? No. You knew they were a couple, and that she cared about him, but I wouldn't say that they beat players over the head with it.

I thought the desire demon in the mage's tower embodied what real relationships are all about. :wizard:
