I don't think it's so much that their pain makes them more attractive, just that it makes the character, as written, more interesting. As I've stated before, I'm not a fan of 'fixer' relationships, but in a game where story-telling and drama is key, we're unlikely to have many characters - LIs or otherwise - who are well-adjusted and 'normal'.
Isabela apparently is troubled deep down (though about what I have no idea), Anders is possed, Fenris is an escaped slave, Merrill uses blood to control people, your sister is an apostate on the run from the law, Aveline's husband was just brutally killed in front of her, and Carver... well, Carver and Varric may actually be the most unscathed out of the lot of them. Not really a whole lot of choice if you're looking for healthy relationships.
I do recall a conversation from way back, with Monsieur Gaider also replying. He mentioned how love interests or perhaps even companions can never be entirely normal or healthy or without skeletons in their closet.
There really would not be a storyline without these hooks. I imagine the rivalry/friendship paths will give this thing whole new dimmensions. Perhaps it will not always be a fixer relationship.
So, to keep in topic, here is to a character whose bisexuality is not overly connected with a dark past. That these things would be more independent of each other. It did seem a bit too much with Zevran.
