In short i hope the world of Dragon Age is a gay panic free world where people don't feel threatened by simply receiving a flattering comment or cheesy pick up line from someone of the same gender.

This just reminded me that, yesterday, when I was playing DA:O and talked to Oghren when one of the conversation options was "I love you too, Oghren" and while to my female warden he responded normally, to my male warden he was all something along the lines of "Why'd you take it there? Can't a guy just say something to his friend without it getting all weird..." and I thought it wasn't cool. I mean, he could have responded to me the same as my female warden where he just wasn't romantically interested but wasn't weirded out either. And also in the Slim quests where you have to steal things, and you can get close enough to that one guy by saying "Don't you remember me from that party, in the dark closet, with all that passion?" and he gets really weirded out and asks you never to mention it again... but only with a male warden. I really hope there's no more gay panic like that.

Oh, no, I don't mind that at all. Some people are uncomfortable when a person of the same sex makes a pass at them. I think it's completely fair to portray it in a video game series that has, thus far, been equal in its treatment of genders and sexualities.

I mean, it's not as if Oghren (or any other "straight" character) is hostile or bigoted of a gay, male Warden. He simply doesn't want to be hit on. And that's fair!

Admittedly, Oghren does have that one exchange with Zevran, if Zevran is in a relationship with a male Warden.

Oghren: So... you and him?
Zevran: The Warden? Yes.
Oghren: Hmm. Good luck with that.

Yes, Oghren has a completely different exchange if the Warden is female, but isn't that fair enough? He doesn't loose approval of if the Warden is gay, nor does he start ranting about "sin" or anything like that. I think that if we're going to expect the Dragon Age series to continue it's equal portrayal of different sexualities (which is a lot more than what most games do) then we who choose to engage the homosexual content should be tolerant of the portrayal of characters who are not 100% okay with it.

And why do you think those would not be normal reactions?

I'd be more okay with this reaction from supposedly straight characters if straight wardens received similar reactions from supposedly gay characters... but as it is, I think that when all these little comments get summed up, I get the impression that my warden is practically the only gay one out there... Like, really, are the only bi characters in the entire DA:O universe Leliana, Zevran, and Iona/Damien? I mean of course I think it's good that there's no loss of approval but... I also wish there were a few gay/bi NPCs scattered about. I guess I didn't mean so much that each single instance was annoying, but that it happens every single instance my gay male dalish warden gets a flirtatious dialogue option with a male NPC ;_;

Sorry I guess I must be really bad at expressing myself, but it's not that each single instance was abnormal, but that this happened every single instance I tried it with a male NPC, giving me the feeling like "Me and Zevran are the only gay/bi men in this entire universe," and like everyone else was weirded out by it.

Herren and Wade were a couple. But I suppose they were testing the waters in Origins, so to speak. Perhaps there will be more reactions, positive and negative to a homosexual relationship in Dragon Age 2.

But then again, they have said that people are generally indifferent towards it all in this world. It may be unusual to some, but never something to really hate or dislike.

Yep. Gaider himself says they are.

No. Didn't the dev who wrote Herren and Wade said that was parody and not really canon?

I agree. Its great when a few characters act a little weirded out, cause that makes sense. Sure, the general idea is that its not unheard of. They said it was not viewed negatively like it is in real life. People in Ferelden just stop a moment, go 'oh', then shrug and continue with their lives. But that doesn't mean everyone is completely cool. Like we have homophobes and LGBT supporters, they to can have those. So its not Oghren's thing, but its not like he strapped you to a stake and started preaching the damnation before Andraste's eyes. xD

Then it must be true! I didn't catch that at all, though, haha. That makes me feel a bit better! My feeling was "yeah, people should be indifferent to homosexuality given the codex / word of god about it..." which is in line with what you were saying, but my feeling after trying all the flirty lines on guy NPCs was that, in actually, everyone except prostitutes and people raised by prostitutes are weirded out by gay men ;_; I think the experience is more neutral if you play a lesbian, though.

You could also seduce the guard in Denerim's prison if you had enough coercion. Hilarious moment.

One thing I'm really looking forward to is the gay lines actually being voiced this time...
Most of Zev's lines were the same whether you played male or female. M!Hawke however should have a bunch of recorded lines exclusive to the M/M romance. That's pretty nice!

Even though Herron was a desire demon...(though I believe it's been said that it's not canon)

They said that about Herren being a desire demon in the downloadable content, if I am not mistaken.

Wow... I always stabbed Ser Cauthrian in the face out of spite, but if I can do that, I might just have to intentionally lose that battle! I'm also really excited for the voiced lines!

Zevran and the M!Warden had some male-specific lines between them, so I would be surprised if Hawke didn't have homosexual-specific dialogue with his same-sex love interest. What I'm looking forward to are really sweet, adorable exchanges, like this one from Origins:

Zevran: I fancy you. Does it make you uncomfortable?
M!Warden: You make me many things. Never uncomfortable.

It's exceptionally hilarious if Alistair is in Fort Drakon with you. He doesn't say anything, but the mental image of Alistair, naked, trapped in a room with the Warden as he seduces another man..... is just fantastic.

Then again, I can be really cruel to Alistair and his.... lack of experience.

Yeah, it's still a disappointment that they didn't bother to give Alistair any specific remarks/comments in that scene though double so when the Warden is male.

This is why I really hope there's just going to be one m/m option and one f/f. I think that would make it far more likely that M!Hawke and the LI get exclusive m/m dialogue. If all the LIs are bi I think we'd just get the basic pronoun-switched conversations in the s/s romances, especially considering they've recorded fewer lines of dialogue for DA2 compared to DAO...

Except Bioware have already stated that it isnt worth their while to develep f/f and m/m exclusives from a return on investment point of view in their current generation of games for this generation of gamers unfortunately.
So realistically the best we can hope for is a bi Li with a couple of unique lines for a same sex relationship.
I'm just hoping against all hope that the silly dlc companion is a bi li with a real romance path where I don't have to play therapist or feel very uncomfortable on account of his looks.

I'll be skipping the demo, I want to pay the full game fresh and virgin. (plus I don't have a computer good enough to play the demo in the first place...it only plays WoW)

I don't think either of our options are going to be in the demo anyway - isn't it just the escape from Lothering and the Isabela quest we saw in the live feed the other week? Since AFAIK, it's game play that's already been leaked, I don't feel the burning need to get it. (Besides, I'm playing on the console and don't have Xbox Live Gold, so I think I still have a week before it comes out anyway, which is a week before release - better to go the full two weeks without rather than try to take the edge off and instead get it worse than before)

Now, if we were getting a chance to meet all our party members through the demo, I'd be a little more open to it, so I could get a feel for how I want to interact with all of them. And finally come to a decision about who I want to romance more, Anders or Fenris.

true. I'd rather just wait another week for the full game.
