I've never played the witcher, as I lost my gaming PC.

And people need to stop comparing Dragon Age and Oblivion, There nothing alike -_-.

I've played most of the suggested titles, I have been a rabid Fable fan since the first game and I HATE playing a male character yet still feel the 1st kicked the 2nd and 3rds butts in terms of replayability and gameplay.

Two worlds is the only game that comes close and it is still so far from the engrossing play of DAO its not even funny. Honestly after playing DAO I realize we have not seen a game like this ever and apparantly we never will again. The character interactions, the many possible ways to RP your character and the romances, the depth of emotional engagement in this game will likely never be duplicated.

That being said Two worlds and The witcher are very similar to Fable except, well they are better, and remember I love Fable!

How much do they pay you? Maybe they want to contract me too.
Otherwise... seems you missed a ton of other very good RPGs when you make such a statement.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Morrowind. Similar to Oblivion but better. Its sandbox rather than linear so you don't get the character or story development of a typical Bioware game but your options are much more open. It was made backwards-compatible with the 360. You'd probably have to buy it 2nd hand though.

True, I loved Morrowind... so much, too much. That game sucked me in completely, actually I dare to say it was the best RPG I ever played. Not comparable to DA in genre, but still. People mentioned Oblivion, Morrowind was so much better, so it should not remain unmentioned here. :D
Other great - slightly older - games:
Arx Fatalis (RIP Arcane Studios, they are part of Bethesda now).
Gothic 1 and 2
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (although it is leaning much more towards FPS/Action Adventure)

Only read the first page and I was surprised to see Neverwinter Nights wasn't mentioned.

The original NWN has some pretty dated graphics but NWN2 is not too bad and the storytelling is actually good.

I think I might be a bit like you myself, I really only like fantasy setting RPG's so I just have no interrest in something like ME.

I suggest other games by BioWare. Jade Empire is obvious, but it's an excellent game. The only difference is the Asian setting and lack of customization. Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights are also worth mentioning. However, I have not played through either of them entirely. (The discs were lost years ago...) Posted Image

Even if you think of yourself as a console gamer, don't rule out playing the PC game Baldur's Gate. It is old enough that you don't need much of a "gaming" PC to run it. It runs great on my laptop (which is NOT AT ALL powerful) and it is a really fun game. Of course you'll have to get used to the 2D graphics and so on...

I...third? This.

Morrowind is hands down the BEST RPG ever made.  Completely open- you can kill the main quest giver and continue to play, you just won't be able to complete the quest.  3000 NPC's.  Over 1000 quests and side quests.  Hundreds of dungeons, most of which have backstory to them.  Complete the main quest?  Continue to play.  Want to kill an entire town?  Continue to play.

Google Morrowind and read the forums- the game is over 10 years old and people are STILL playing the game.

AND I FOURTH THIS lol (please read that in a gimli voice:)  yeah morrowind is soooooooooooooo goooooood actually. was reading all the posts and people mentioning oblivion, when morrowind was better! if you can play that on pc, they say its even more immersive, not to mention the newly released super mod :) and honestly, people are not lying when they talk about the amount of freedom you have in this game...not to mention all the stuff you can do.....you will be playing it well past the da2 release date. just be prepared to love/hate a particular medley! with older games, it sometimes takes a little of getting used to the format or whatnot, but like a previous poster said, just power through it and you will see how rewarding it can be! ditto the comment about the forums as well.

I know you said you're on xbox, but there are some ancient PC gems out there that the crappiest of modern machines should be able to handle!
Fallout 1 & 2. IDK, to me something of the original spirit of 1 & 2 just didn't make it to 3. :/ Anyway, the old Fallouts are what hooked me to PC gaming in first place.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is also excellent. Very cool fantasy/steampunk with awesome lore and moral choices (only romance option is with a female NPC though :P)

also seconding Jade Empire, both KotORs (though of course 2 can't really compare with 1, but it's still decent). VtM Bloodlines is also great - the clan choice is somewhat reminiscent of DA:O's origins system.

What is this super mod you mention here?
I just recently reinstalled Morrowind, TES fever got me again after watching the Skyrim trailer, now I am fiddling with this MGE graphics extender and installing all kinds of landscape mods to improve the graphics a bit. There is tons of mods and there are quite a lot new ones that really improve the game it seems.

One game that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere here is the Gothic Series and its successor Risen (although I don't know if that is available on Xbox360).

Risen is quite similar to Dragon Age actually, only that you don't have a party, no pause function, no romance.

But it's a good game, definitely worth checking out

If you have not played them Baldur's gate and Baldur's gate 2 are unsurpassed party based CRPG's. Also Icewindale 1 & 2 are great fun 'cos although they don't have any party member interaction as such and a linear story line, the tactical situations a great and you get to design your own party from scratch so you can be very creative in character builds. BG1 and IWD1 are under older D&D rules, but BG2 and IWD2 are under D&D 3.5 rules which many people consider the best. Planescape Torment is considered by many the true masterpiece infinity engine game, but I didn't like it.

The Temple of Elemental Evil is hard to get and the very devil to patch but there is a small dedicated community supporting it. It has a one off unique turn based combat engine that implements the entire D&D rule book. The adventure is a PnP D&D classic, and the combat is far deeper and more interesting than BG/NWN/DA.

Morrowind, IMO, is well worth playing. Oblivion is basically a dumbed down version of it with better graphics. I know you don't like first person games, but Morrowind is so deep and engossing (which also means difficult, hence dumbing down for Oblivion) that I would recommend persisting with it.

Gothic 2 is well worth playing. it isn't first person, but is single character. It's not D&D and is heavily oriented to sword play. It has a unique atmosphere and the big thing is that you can get really good at sword fighting, which means you can defeat powerful enemies through skill rather than stats. Fighting in in this game is epic. Gothic 3 suffers from a number of quests involving endless searches for multiple items in huge areas with no location clues.

Finally I would without hesitation recommend The Witcher. It borrows a lot from Gothic in atmosphere and the focus on sword play (single character, not party) and it has an excellent atmosphere and story line. A cracking CRPG.

I would recommend Neverwinter Nights 2. It has an excellent story made by Bioware with party-based combat. The only idea you have to get used to is that it heavily relies on the Dungeons and Dragons rules. So weapons might show damage as 1d8. Read the manual and it will make sense.

I honestly couldn't get into Oblivion or Fallout 3 - I never liked Bethesda's inventory management system for an RPG as it never rewards you for picking up loot. It only hinders you. I think Bioware's games are the best. Star Wars: KOTOR, KOTOR2, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dragon Age: Origins are the proof.

Most fantasy RPGs come out of Japan.

Xbox 360 has some JRPGS of which many are mediocre but Tales of Vesperia is said to be one of the better ones, it is fantasy, with a party, just more like Dragon Age II it seems with a lot of button mashing/hack and slash, unfortunately.

Final Fantasy XIII is also a lot better than some think. That one has a combat system that is a little bit more similar to Dragon Age.

you forgot Lost Odyssey. tbh only TWO of the JRPGs on the 360 were mediocre (Infinite Undiscovery and Blue Dragon). the rest were really good

If you don't mind somewhat unatractive character models, Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansion Mask of the Betrayer is worth considering. Actually I think Nwn2 platinum edition includes those two games + a third expansion, which I personally found lacking, but I digress.

NWN2 has a very solid campaign with epic feel, and some very fun companions with plenty of banters and interactions. There is a tiefling rogue, Neeshka who is always at odds with a dwarf who got it in his head to become a monk, an elf wizard named Sand, with wit and personality matching his name (he's awesome), and others. They kind of all form a big dysfunctional family, constantly sniping at each other as you go. It's fun.

Mask of the Betrayer is a more personal tale, less about fate of the country and more about protagonist personal circumstance. It also has less companions, but they are a little more unique, and also come with optional romance paths (2 of them, anyway).

edit: I just realized how old this thread is. *facepalm* oh well!
