This thread is great. The OP stated almost word for word what I'm looking for - I'm on 360, played Fable first which led to DA:O, and having devoured all that the DA universe has to offer I'm looking for something to kill time before I can play DA:O again without the-boy-who-shares-my-house stealing the disc in frustration. I'm tempted by a lot of these PC games, but alas I have a Mac. It looks like NWN2 is available for OSX though so I think I'll start there...

Thanks for the great suggestions everyone! :)

Unfortunately, the 360 lacks a decent line-up of "classic" fantasy RPGs like DA:O. One game you might like, however, is 'Faery: Legends of Avalon'. It's "only" an XBLA game, and it's not as great as full-fledged CRPGs (e.g. no voice-overs whatsoever). But for only 1200 MSP (~ US$ 15), it's well worth it.

I admit I haven't played it myself yet, but my wife is totally nuts about it.

Awesome, thanks! I'll check it out.

I do actually have a PS3 as well, but I assume it probably has the same sort of line up as 360 on the fantasy RPG front...?

I just recently purchased it out of morbid curiosity.  It's waiting until mid-May (end of the semester), but everyone I've spoken to has said that same thing, "You're gonna get mad, really mad...controller throwin' angry."  :D

I have a PS3, but this thread has been of help to me as I'm looking for games to get me through the summer.

Sorry, I have no idea at all. All I do know about the PS3's selection of games is that I'm not interested in any game except MGS4: Guns of the Patriots, and I'm not buying another console just to play a single game.

Anyway, if you like dungeon crawls, you might also want to check out Torchlight. Story/plot is practically non-existent, but it's still a very entertaining game. The trial version of Torchlight lets you play surprisingly long/far, so I suggest you check it out.

Well if you take Dragon Age make it impossibly hard and take the quality down a few dozen notches, you get Divinity 2. A good game but really freaking hard.

I might give Sacred 2 a try after my DA2 playthrough. I bought it awhile ago but haven't played it yet.

Divinity 2 is a good game, and hardly lacks the detail that Dragon Age has.  It is more difficult however those that enjoy a difficult game will appreciate it.

Looks like I'm a bit late for the party, but I'll throw my two cents in nonetheless.

Personally, I'm with the Morrowind crowd - that game is simply amazing. I've wasted countless hours playing that game - and yet every moment was well worth it. I still play through it from time to time, and it's no less enjoyable now than it was all those years ago.

Also, Knights of the Old Republic. That game introduced me to Bioware in the first place, and I still hold it in high regard. You'll never play a better Star Wars game than that one (unless Bioware can outdo itself with the newest Old Republic title, of course).

And one more thing - just suck it up and play Mass Effect, if you haven't already. It's incredible, and every bit as good as DA:O in terms of storyline and immersion.

well i prefer to stick to the PC games as i have more options. most of the console games ive played are more action/adventure types than true RPGs but you might like them anyway.
resonance of fate
dungeon siege III
white knight
white knight II will be out soon. it is also fun to play online with other people and my favorite out of this list.

Most fantasy RPGs come out of Japan.

Xbox 360 has some JRPGS of which many are mediocre but Tales of Vesperia is said to be one of the better ones, it is fantasy, with a party, just more like Dragon Age II it seems with a lot of button mashing/hack and slash, unfortunately.

Final Fantasy XIII is also a lot better than some think. That one has a combat system that is a little bit more similar to Dragon Age.

you forgot Lost Odyssey. tbh only TWO of the JRPGs on the 360 were mediocre (Infinite Undiscovery and Blue Dragon). the rest were really good

Not really: Lost Odyssey was absolutely amazing and Vesperia was as good as always, but everything else was mediocre at best. From Eternal Sonata to Star Ocean IV, and Infinite Undisovery to Blue Dragon, the only thing even remotely good about these games were their soundtracks.

I didn't like Sacred 2, so I returned it along with some other games in exchange for Oblivion-GOTY. I've heard you can play Oblivion in 3rd person-how do you do that?

NM-I figured it out. The customization of your character is pretty extensive, but the controls are a bit complicated. I got killed before I escaped from the dungeon. I'll look to pick up a FAQ.

Have you tried Star Wars The Old Republic, its not fantasy but it's great or Neverwinter Nights is good.

For the 360 I'd say only Mass Effect 1 and 2 cause there the only other Bioware games for the 360 (not counting Dragon Age 2). You could go to the used bin and get Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic 1, and 2 for the orginial Xbox which are probably the closest games compaired to DAO on consolses.

Ditto the first line and I did to the second :D And considering how much I loathe F/TPS, I swear that's saying something. I am NO good at shooters. At all. That said, the story in ME 1 was so intriguing, I kept firing wildly away through the whole game, determined to get to the end. And I really enjoyed ME 2 as well. Don't like them better than Origins, but then again I think Bioware went for the stars with that game. Too bad they didn't keep reaching farther with DA 2, but taken on its own and of itself, the second game "can" be a helluva lot of fun... Until the end, LOL!

I reccomend enchanted arms for the xbox 360. Its party based JRPG and the story is really good, very unique in certain ways.

Otherwise Iw ould reccomend purchasing jade empire from xboxlive.

People are always looking for more good games! My recommendations for those who like Dragon Age:

- Mass Effect 1 and especially 2. Despite the different setting, the 'feel' is similar, with equal emphasis on making choices.

- Knights of the Old Republic.. The story in DAO feels stronger to me, but KotOR still falls in the same genre.

and, if considering classics, Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment. Substantially different gameplay, but once again, they're games where story matters.

On that note, I'll admit that I found Neverwinter Nights disappointing, for its weaker writing. And I didn't like Oblivion, since its 'open ended' design comes at the cost of an urgent tale - a choice I feel is better suited to MMOs than single-player games. Single-player RPGs have the unique chance to make you the one fated to save the world, while you can pursue open-ended play in any MMO.

I'm not knocking anyone who enjoyed Oblivion, but it's worth noting that what that game shares with DAO is the fantasy setting, not the smart writing or fascinating companions. Mass Effect won't work for anyone who loves dragons and hates lasers, but it's a good match for players who enjoy unfolding a story as they play.

Neverwinter Nights, however, offers a large and varied wealth of excellently written community campaigns, which kept me going for years.

For the rest, what CBGB said. I'm currently playing Mass Effect 1 and it gets quite... affecting. (I just made a decision that literally kept me awake the night after)

And indeed, ED:DKS (Ego Draconis: Dragon Knight Saga) is a GREAT game. I totally recommend it to every RPG fanatic. :)
