Melee = hand-to-hand/foot/claw/tentacle.

Vanguard = Close Range Biotics/Shotgun-to-face/hand/foot/claw/tentacle specialist

hmm... good point

Melee in ME2 is pretty shoddy. I'm with the op.

Ever wonder why most people just stuck to soldier in their playthroughs? Maybe the melee wasn't great enough for Vanguards = P

lol meh, I'm a Vanguard so I can't say that's the case for everyone.

I'm disturbed by the number of CQC-haters in this thread. :?

Melee is fine the way it is IMO. The only change I would make is making melee more effective against certain enemies compared to others aka, Melee doing more damage to Asaris and Salarians but less to Krogan and Geth.

If they built a new class like a biotic melee specialist, I would be on board. Use some Jade Empire type fighting animations with lightning punches or whatever type of power they want to give it , and you're good to go. :D

You mean the Vanguard? Believe it or not, it already happened.

Melee is fine as is. It deals solid damage and staggers most enemies. Just wish it could stagger Krogan and other large enemies like Powers do when they've got their Armor up.

OH MY GOD YES. THIS.

!!PLEASE!! Don't turn my ME into a stupid fantasy sword game. If you take a fist to a gun fight, you will (and damn well should) LOSE. If you take a knife to a gun fight, the same applies. Same for a sword, or a mace, or a hammer, or a flail, pike, halberd or ANY medieval/fantasy weapon. If you take them to a gun fight you will get shot down at range and you damn well deserve it for being a complete retard.

Melee combat in ME 3 could certainly stand being a bit more artistic but it should NEVER be on par with gun combat. Sorry but if you love melee combat and want swords and ninja kung-fu then please play a fantasy game. Melee is and should always be an afterthought in ME development. Something that happens rarely if ever, and only viable against weakling or 90% dead enemies. "Melee weapons" should never never never never never be included in ME.

But what if you're a Vanguard?

What about Vanguards? They aren't ninjas. They use shotguns to pulp enemies at close range, and melee is just there to save a round of ammo if an enemy has a sliver of life left.

Vanguards are the masters of devastating shotgun headshots if you're doing it right.

Vanguard Vanguard Vanguard...

They are FINE the way they are. There is no need to expand melee in any way to make Vanguard more useable or balanced. As stated above, they are the SHOTGUN class. With melee being an emergency secondary because there is A. Miniscule magazine capacity for ME2 guns and VERY long reload animations, B. no fast-switch pistol (concievable... if questionable) or insta-magical-knife (ridiculous) like COD. It serves its intended purpose perfectly fine as-is. It provides a minor stun and buys time to back off and reload or change weapons, or it can be a finishing move on a near-dead enemy who needs just 1 more bullet you don't have because your stupid gun holds only 3. It is not and never should be a viable primary "weapon.:"

My fear with expanded melee is that if they build it they will feel compelled to balance it. "Balanced" melee and melee weapons are one of the worst immersion murderering concepts any game with guns can possibly adopt.

For the gentleman who admonished "CQC Haters" I submit that since not a single engagement in ME 2 ever occurs at a range in significant excess of 100 meters (and very, very few at any range greater than maybe 30 meters) that every single fight is "CQC" as defined by most existing military doctrines.

If anyone who took guns with ME 2-level accuracy-at-range against guys with real-world, current day, run-of-the-mill Police pump action shotguns they would be obliterated at 100+ yards before they could fire a single respectably accurate shot... anyway don't get me started on video game shotguns:O

Back in the day, the best of all side-scroller 'beat-em-ups' in the arcades was Double Dragon. Wonderful music, beautiful graphics, classic plot, co-op play, and a wide range of combat moves. Including the many different weapons that enemies drop.

It took just under an hour to move from left to right through all the regions, defeat the end boss and then if you where playing co-op, kick the @#$% out of your brother to score the girl (even if she was his girlfriend at the start of the game!).

In the whole game the most powerful move, is the elbow. It is possible to win the entire game against all enemies including bosses by precisely timing the elbow. Do not mock the elbow. It is a classic maneuver that can even win over your brothers hot, kidnap prone girlfriend.

Might aswell get Shepard to get unzip his armor, get his dick out, and slap every being out there with it as Shep just owns everyone in combat, speech etc etc.

If you want ot call one attack that acording to even the guide that comes with the game is to close the distance to then use short range guns ie sub machinegun or shotgun. Let's break that down 2 ammo powers cryo and incendiary don't sound like melee, but I could be wrong. :P Pull is to put them up in the air to shoot again no. Sockwave is a ranged attack that knocks them down better from cover than up close soaking up hits. Assault master makes no mention of melee indeed gives bonuses to weapon damge aka ranged guns. Do they do extra damage to melee attacks or have any speacial ones either? Nope just charge that can be re-purposed as being melee related, but nothing more.

If you even try to just melee with 4 varren you usually will be dead in seconds. It has no viability in the game as is. Perhaps rightly so since it is a bout the guns and biotics for the most part. if it were a melee oriented class their powers would reflect that.

I would be fine with it as is since it is a small component of the game. The guns and powers are the show. It would be nice for a little spice though. Especially in ME2 the classes had a more vanilla feel to them. Some abilities were not too good and others are the spam over and over type. Some more passive abilities would be nice maybe even melee bonuses of some sort.
