Hello.

I am one of those who experience this ridiculously severe lags when playing. Also heavy lag during the introscreens.

I have searched and read around everywhere, but to no avail. I cannot get it to run smooth!

Tried several things, Choosing priority, Processor amount.. Eh.. Damnit. Patching, the game aswell as my drivers.
Tried Windowed mode and without Vsync. I have tried... What more was it? I don't remember. I have been siting here several hours trying to find a solution.. ( Mass Effect fan alright.)

I have Mass effect 2 aswell but I want a character for it. (Have them both for the 360 aswell but I upgraded my pc and threw 'em along)

Specs:
2,93 ghz Duo, Intel with 4 Gb Ram
Gigabyte Geforce GTX 460 SCO(Super-over-clocked). ( I believe this card COULD be the problem )
Windows 7, 64 bit.

Anyone got any tips/recommendations?

Oh! It played just fine through Eden Prime but as soon the citadel was reached, it all started.

I use Realtek aswell. Updated it before.
I don't have PowerDVd or similar software.

Mass Effect is up to date with Bring down the Sky.

What's your video driver version? Also, could you monitor your framerates using Fraps? I want to know exactly how severe the problem is.

My driver version is... 260.99 .

I have just reinstalled the game. I will update it and check if problem persists. If it does I will get Fraps. Would say though that the Framerates would be around .. 10 - 15. Not exact of course but I would guess to that. It hangs at times aswell but resumes after a few seconds.

Okey. The lagging was still there. I feel quite down. Do you need the exact frame rate? otherwise I will download a save for Me2 and play that instead.

I won't need the exact framerate. I'm not sure I'll be able to give you an answer anyway. I have the same video driver on slower hardware and my framerates are acceptable as long as I don't use hardware accelerated sound, which you don't have anyway because you have a Realtek. Is that a factory overclock on the GPU, by the way? I believe Mass Effect (or was it ME2?; or both?) doesn't like anything but standard clockspeeds.

I think 64-bit system can cause some problems too. Find the MassEffect executable and try to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP as administrator. Can't guarantee this will work.

Yes, it's factory overclocked. I have tried Vista and Xp as compability modes. The game doesn't like me. Or well, my computer. I found a savegame online I will import however. For Me2 that is. It is satisfactory.

I own Me 1 and 2 on the 360 aswell so I won't really miss anything.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Really appreciated. If there was an option, I would give you rep.

You can always try EA's official tech support but they probably know less about technical issues in their games than the people on this forum.

This might sound silly but.. are you running Xfire when you play the game? Try disabling ingame x.x but also follow Fred's recommendation too!

Also, did you install DX9.0c that came with the game, or are you relying on DX10/11 that comes with Win7?

If its not installed, give that a try. ME1 & 2 specifically require 9.0c.

I am installing DirectX now actually. Read some about it. Will try it out. Having a crash on ME 2 now. Also, I did run Xfire once ingame. Then AFTERWARDS, I think, it started to lag. I could play through Eden Prime without a single lag. Something triggered it to happen. Also regarding tech support. I am one of them who thinks that Tech support are mostly for show. Forums are always more helpful and usually more cunning. In my experience :P

Theres a good reason for that. Forumites have normally encountered loads of different bugs, with different gaes, on different types of hardware over the years. A lot of also tend to build our own rigs, and arent scared to "pull the big red lever to see what happens". We then berak our own kit, and then have to fix it again.

Not to mention tech support desks tend to be entry level positions, whereas we have moved on from entry level, to bigger and better things.

Firstly, you dont hijack someone elses thread that is dealing with a completely seperate topic.

Secondly, you contact EA, as they provide the support for Mass Effect, as it states on the forum title.

I actually have the same problem. Checked the DirectX... but no result neither.
I discover the game, bought it recently, so if I could finish at least once the first before touching the second I'll be glad.
Just to mention, I haven't notice I had a version with the BDtS included. I installed today some patch, hoping the game will stop not responding. In fact my patch just made it lag.
I un-install the game twice already. I don't have Xfire so this was excluded. Compatibility mode of course tried.
Do u want me to notify the specs of my PC?

I just wonder if you Master-Krill found a solution or just let it go ?

I just let it go. Completed it on the xbox several times so I already had the story around.
I wonder what your graphics card is? It's not a GTX 460 is it?

BDTS is a downloadable content thing. Think it acts as the latest patch aswell. My game started lagging somewhere after The first mission.

ME-1 is harder on GPUs than on CPUs; ME-2 is harder on CPUs than on GPUs, for whatever reason. The two games may very well run quite differently, framerate-wise, on the same (borderline quality) PC. The OP on the thread had a high-powered Geforce, but no one ever warned him that Geforce drivers tend to be extremely variable about game compatibility with ME-1.

Recommended System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC

Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista

Processor:
2.8+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD

Memory:
2 Gigabyte Ram

Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher.
ATI X1800 XL series or higher

Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes

Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers – 5.1 sound card recommended
