EDIT - this issue's now been resolved, thanks =]

I'm running a disc version of ME2, patched to v1.02 via the download on BioWare's website. My PC meets the minimum requirements:
Windows XP Professional (5.1, build 2600)
Intel Core2 Duo CPU @ 2.66GHz (2 CPUs)
2GB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS with 512MB VRAM (driver version 258.96)
SoundBlaster X-fi Audio card (driver version 5.12.1.1201)
114GB free space on my HDD

My problem started a couple of days ago when I started up the game as usual - I'd been playing since Christmas on the same system with no changes and it worked fine up until this point. I'd just finished Garrus' personal mission on the Citadel last time I played, and I saved and shut down properly after that. The next time I loaded the game up, though, right after the 'Bioware' and 'EA' logos flash by, the game starts to stutter and responds really slowly. For example, it will even take a few seconds to respond to me moving around the main menu with the mouse. If I try and play the actual game, the problem's still there and makes it unplayable because the camera takes ages to respond to mouse movements, and I can't even tell how quickly my character movement responds because of the camera. It reminds me of when I used to play World of Warcraft and someone else was using a lot of the bandwidth, it would cause a lot of lag. It seems similar to that but ME2 doesn't need an internet connection to run, right?
I've made sure to update all my drivers and the game and still get the same problem. I haven't changed my PC physically at all, and I haven't installed any new software. I uninstalled some things, only one of which I didn't know exactly what it was - 'AOL LLC Download Updater,' but I can't find anything through google that suggests that has anything to do with Mass Effect 2.

Has anybody else experienced anything like this problem?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I tried taking every single setting down to its absolute minimum, and still experienced the same problem.

Please register the game on the fourm so we know we are dealing with a legit copy, and not a pirate. Pirate copies arent supported due to them being cracked by gods know who, and as such, you wont get any help.

This sounds like a tough nut to crack. Obviously something has changed, but it's of course hard to know when you don't know what.

First check for an obvious culprit, I suppose. Set ME2 to run in a window at some resolution below your desktop's so that you can see it while playing, then open up task manager and sort the Processes tab by CPU. See if there's anything else besides ME2 that takes up a significant percentage while ME2 is running.

Also: it seems like Nvidia's new hobby lately has been screwing up ME compatibility for older series of cards. This doesn't sound like that kind of thing, but if all else fails, I suppose you could try backtracking to an older driver.

i had the exact same problem with the exact same graphics card, closer inspection revealed the fan had gone on the graphics card causing it to overheat and cause the game to freeze

I hadn't even considered a hardware issue - I've run a few other games that I know worked very recently, and the same issue is present with all of them. It's late and dark now but tomorrow I'll open up my case and have a look at the graphics card - I was saving up and planning to get a new one soon anyway, so it's not too big a problem if that's what's happened.

Thanks everybody for your replies.

Try runnign teh game directly from the executable, rather than from the launcher. If you have done a standard install, it should be under;

C:\\program files\\bioware\\mass effect 2\\binaries\\masseffect2.exe

Thanks for the tip, Bogsnot1, but it didn't help. I just opened up my case and had a look at the graphics card and it turns out I have exactly the same problem everyname had - the fan on the graphics card has stopped working. Time to go shopping!

Thanks again for everyone's time and help.
