As per title, just a few simple questions that need answering. My friends and I now live too far apart to make playing P&P D&D possible, and we are looking at possible solutions. Is it possible to play through a new home-made campaign using the NWN2 system? I understand that there is obviously not as much freedom using this program as compared to just using the 3.5 books+imagination.

So basically, is it possible for me to DM a new campagn creating quests and dungeons, and is it close enough to the real game that my players will be able to create their own characters to their liking as though they were making P&P characters.

Sorry if I wasnt very clear. I have a splitting headache currently.

The first thing that comes to mind is that while you can make your own adventures developing custom content and modules usually takes some time.

You can run through adventures together and even play the DM to spin it in a different direction but the areas you play in will be a limiting factor.

It's hard to say: We go to candlekeep and then just go there if the area isn't in the module you are playing. It will be more railroaded and less free form.

To get a good feel for the limitations and possibilities you would have to play the game though.

Interesting.

I know for a fact that none of my players have played through any of the NWN2 content. How hard would it be to say.. take a custom made campaign from another player, or just take one of the campaigns from the main game, and do some slight editing here and there. ie adding traps, or creating a main enemy so I at least have some control as DM rather then just watching them play through a computer game.

Well there are lots of modules out there which you can strip of the storyline and DM. You would have to learn to DM however.

I never did that so I can't help you there. I think is that what you want is possible but it requires preperation and can only be done in a preset location or number of locations. (the areas included in the module)

All in all it's possible but not a simple solution. An investment of time certainly, especially if you haven't played the game.

You can play the campaign Co-Op though, as well as many other modules. So that's a start.
I'd say you should probably watch a few Youtube movies of NWN2 and see if it's what you want.
A video game can't replace your imagination.

If you're just looking for a way to play online with your friends, I recommend Maptool. It's a virtual tabletop that you can use just as a online battlemap or if you're feeling adventurous, your can write your own macros to automate everything from simple attacks to complete character management. There are also frameworks for various systems that have already been written by other users. The user base is friendly and helpful if you run into any troubles.

d20Pro http://www.d20pro.com/  is a good virtual tabletop. You can play many diferent RP games besides D&D. You can import anything to use as a battle map, and it's compatable with Hero Lab character creator.

Oh where's NWN_DM when you need an answer to this kind of question?

Firstly, DM'd/MP sessions were, I believe, the original intent of the MP functions of the original NWN and subsequently of NWN2.  Just because Persistent Worlds grew out of that changes nothing in that regard.  That said, it is definitely a learning curve to using the DM tools and to create campaigns and such. {bThat[/b] said, it's doable and there are plenty of "shortcuts" available to you to ease you more swiftly into the theme of DMng a session with your buddies over the internet.

1) Prefabbed Areas at the IGN Vault. (These allow you to Drop in an area and fill it with your own encounters, some also provide creatures and potential encounters as well, but the idea here is to have areas built already and allow you to "populate" it with your adventure.)

2) DMFI Player / DM User Package: Version 1.10b   (You must, must, Must become familiar with the Dungeon Master Friendly Initiative and use the DM user package as well as you are able.  It can become and essential component in the lives of DMs and Admins in all aspects of MP play.)

3) I would consider this an essential component of ANY online play where a DM is involved: Skywing's NWN2 Client Extension
(This is a rewritten bit of code that allows greater functionality and performance while DMng in the console.  There's tons of cool stuff you can do with it that without it, is just not possible to do.  Warning, some learning curve involved, but if you become familiar with most of the DM Client Tools already packaged with the game, you gonna learn to love it during that curve.)

Drat it, I sort of lost my "groove," and can't remember what else I was going to suggest.  In any case, you could use those other tools to DM online and play, but, being as you asked for how to do it with NWN2, this is the best I can give you at the moment.  I don't really MP, but I do tend to stay in touch with what's going on at the forefront of NWN2 developments, be they SP, MP or CC.

Welcome and Good Luck!  Hopefully NWN_DM will see this thread and also provide you sage advice to get going.

best regards,

Another possible solution would be if you could use an already established Persistant World as an arena for your adventures. You and your friends could play there.

And maybe, if you can convince the administrators of the server, you could become a DM there. Of course, they may require you to DM for other players frequenting the server as well.

Well, unless you can negotiate some special arrangement for you and your group. I don't know how flexible the authorities of individual servers are.

But it COULD be the easiest and best solution.

If you want you could use my PW for your group. Its an action server with PVP, but if you are good guests ( which i assume most are ) i can set up up as a DM and your group can keep to yourselves or comingle as you desire.

This would let you focus on DMing and not how to do scripting, or how to do quality areas. Your just taking something and repurposing might work, but my gut tells me you'd have to have a pretty in depth knowledge as you'll end up with many odd issues.

I have been working on features for a revised DMFI, so you'd basically be able to use the cutting edge DM features not yet available anywhere else, but eventually should be widely used after i have them perfected. I spend far more time developing than on my server and need DM's to test things out and point out features needed and issues with what i am doing.

I am sure many PW's would make the same offer to any group who is wanting to adventure, might even be able to do it on another PW ( Sea of Dragons in roleplay for example shares a lot of the same hak's with me ) or on something like ALFA which is more of a collective of PW's sharing the same setup so players can hop from server to server. I imagine if you look you can find a PW which has a PW admin who has the same values as you do, and you'll find you get more done by starting where they have stopped, there are quite a few PWs which are almost vacant with PW admins who've spent thousands of hours perfecting every detail, but no one ever tries them to begin with.

Thanks for all the replies, they have been quite helpful with my search.

@painofdungeoneternal - Thanks for the very generous offer, this sounds like it may work out best. I had decided that instead of trying to learn how to do scripting and all that other stuff, I would just be using pre-made modules from others, and just DM'ing them as we go,. I figure if I combine a PS with the occasional side-dungeon, this would work quite well for what I had planned. Ill PM you :)
