I just finished the Dark Elf Trilogy (Great Read). And I like the idea of Drizzt, but I don't want him to Drizzt clone #3642.

So heres a brief backstory. Hes planning to be a CN Wizard. Im not the greatest writer so bear with me.

His mother was a cleric of Lolth that went to the surface with a raiding party. The surface elves heard of the raid though (How, I'm not sure, any ideas?), and they banded together with a few other parties in the area. The drows were skilled of course and killed many elves, but the elves outnumbered them. His mother was one of the last drow still alive.

"Wait!" an elf yelled as one of his brethren was about to strike down the unconscious drow.
"Why?" the attacking elf asked.
"Because she is with child." said the elf, looking at her bulging stomach.

"So." the elf retorted.
"Would you kill the defenseless child to?" asked the elf.

"But its a drow, and ebon skinned killing machine!"
"Stop arguing you two!" came a distant voice.
An elf wearing long robes and carrying a big book came towards them. And incanted several words.
"There, she is asleep. We can deal with her after the fighting is done." said the robed elf.

Several hours later, she awoke. Tied to a tree with a gag in her mouth. She could make out some voices, still to dazed from the spell, it took her several minutes to make the words out clearly. She could not understand the surface elf's language.

"Why don't we just send her back into the underdark?" asked one elf.
"Because, they would execute her when she returned." Said the robed elf.
"Should we take her prisoner?" a young elf woman asked.
"Possibly, she could give us valuable information." the robed elf replied.
"What of her child, will we let them grow up to kill us to?" asked another elf.
"Enough!" The robed elf cried. "I have made up my mind."

He walked over to the drow, who was fully alert.

"I'm sorry to have you tied and gagged, but I'm sure you know we have good reason to." He said to her in the drow language. She tried to start a spell, but the gag prevented her. "We have decided to keep you here, and you will tell us of your people. Or we shall kill you." he said with a smile, knowing she could only do one thing.

So they kept her there, always watched, only ungagged so she could eat or drink. Knowing she could not return to Menzobaranzan, she told them of her people using the silent code. She tried killing herself many times, but her watcher would interupt her before she could finish the spell. Several months later, she gave birth. It was a boy, red eyed, ebony skin, like any other drow. She died while she was giving birth though.

Not wanting to kill the baby, the robed elf decided that he would take care of the child, naming him Vaelyn. The child progressed like most any child would. People were scared of the child, always watching their backs whenever he was close. Few of the children played with him, most of the shunning him and calling him names.

None of the other elves would train him. This lead the robed elf, his foster father, to start teaching him how to use magic. He was not particulerly talented, but the robed elf was the only one who would teach him a skill.

Sorry, I'm a bad writer, but you get my gist right?
Thats all I've got, any changes I should make? It doesn't sound like another drizzt clone does it.

No it doesn't, you use a lot of "though's" though ;)

Maybe the Elves had scouts watching exits from the Underdark and prepared an ambush to catch the raiding party? Perhaps they succeeded in raiding but were caught of guard when they wanted to return to the Underdark, slowed down by all the loot and slaves that they didn't want to abandon.

Where does your Drow live? Suldanesselar (Tethyr BG2) or perhaps Evereska? Don't know of any Underdark entrances near Evereska though. The forests are always an option ofcourse. Maybe Cormanthyr? Somewhere near the Old Court?

Also, not to nitpick but Why does the mother want to kill herself? She's a priestes of Lolth that doesn't want to betray her faith? If she's not then I don't understand why she wouldn't want to survive?

You can read about Viconia, the Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 companion, as well as Solaufein if you want inspiration. They were great Drow characters not at all like the comic hero.

Drizzt was in BG as well, you could play a joke on him and kill him in the sequel.

You could kill him in BG as well. He had very good swords and possibly the best armor in the game,

Thanks, I just don't want my character to be called a drizzt clone.

And I don't have much experience with D&D or the forgotten realms.

I've just played the game for a couple dozen hours and read the dark elf trilogy. Any other books to read? I saw the servant of the shard at a local library.

Being as it's so close to Christmas and it's on my mind, it sounded almost like you could call him:

Vaelyn the red eyed Drow they fear.

Sorry, just my quirky (and usually inappropriate) sense of humor. Would'a been better if his name was Randolf or Rodrick or something with an R, though.

It only hit me, because the children wouldn't let him play any Elven games and such.

That said, it's a good idea for a concept to get a Drow out of the Underdark and show that Nature vs Nurture can still be a valid argument against setting a Race's alignment when the beings can learn and change.

So no. Not a Drizz't clone. And not bad writing, either, though you could use a bit more spit and polish, not bad.
