Right. The notification, as I said, is in your journal-- so it pops up just like you've been given a new quest. It's not an in-game notification.

So if I don't read my journal I won't know about it?

That's terrific!  I'd much rather learn whether my companions have something to say by actually talking to them, so I'll keep doing that.

It means that you're not going to be able to stop in the middle of a dungeon and ask Varric to tell you about dwarves.

I'm inclined to ask Varric about dwarves whenever the desire to learn about dwarves strikes me.  If I happen to learn something about dwarves - either by talking to someone or reading the codex - having now to remember that I want to ask Varric about it later seems a bit more cumbersome than just asking him wherever we happen to be.

Probably, I think it will be like in DAO when something was added to your codex/journal, you got a little temporary pop-up notice at the side of the screen.

Correct.

In Jade Empire, when a companion desires
to speak with you an arrow is shown above his or her head. So in DA II
it will be in your journal just like a quest. When a new quest is opened
in DAO, it is shown on the world map, blinking, and you cannot miss it.

I don't remember if being directed to a follower's home base shows up on the world map or not. Most quests do, if there's a specific place where you're being directed. The quest arrow also shows up over your follower's head, I think, but only once you're inside their base (and only if you haven't disabled the helpers on the options menu).

I believe you mentioned some time ago that followers might also appear at Hawke's home if a plot point or conversation deemed it neccesary. Does it still apply or was it canned during crunching time?

That's good news.

However, Awakening's system was an experiment in an effort to get rid of the "campfire round" so many of their games suffer from -- I doubt they would reuse the system directly but I expect they will not simply reuse the old system either.

Indeed. The experiment in Awakening didn't quite do what we wanted, but that doesn't mean just going back and doing the old thing. You are not clicking on random objects to initiate dialogue in DA2, but you're also not initiating camp-style DAO dialogues anywhere with followers... you can only talk to them like that in their home base.

How much of an improvement it is, we'll see. As always, some people will hate it and some will love it... and what parts of it work we'll bring to the next game beyond. That parts of it that don't, we'll abandon.

I rather liked the Awakening system save for that it meant I had to wander around with the TAB button mashed. Is there any plan to make things you can click more distinctive?

It's just an opinion, but I think a superior approach would actually be area triggers for companions, perhaps causing an exclamation, which would allow you to then click on the "highlighted" character to initiate the conversation.

The new system sounds like it will prevent the accidental click syndrome which would set Alistair to trying to give you his rose in the middle of a gore-soaked battlefield...

I never accidentally clicked Alistiar. I didn't realize this was a problem.

Mainly because she'd insist in ticking off "threesome with a couple of siblings" from her list.

The first time you enter Redcliffe, Alistair initiates dialogue (or does he just ask you to?). Are interactions like those gone, too, or is it only the personal stuff that has been restricted to private quarters?

It means that you're not going to be able to stop in the middle of a dungeon and ask Varric to tell you about dwarves. He can still start a conversation wherever he likes, when it's appropriate.

Aww, I always enjoyed speaking to morighan about her tricking templars in the past while in the deep roads after killing some darkspawn :crying:

What would be nice is if upon going into a certain area or seeing a certain object via proximity or something, the companion had some bark which alerted the character to either click on the companion to speak ("Hey look at that tree...") or if they didn't click right away, then it goes into the journal where you could strike up that conversation back at their home base/camp or whatever ("Hey Hawke remember that tree when we were out in Amaranthine?")

Now add Lady Hawke to the equation.
And let us stop this debauchery before the thread is derailed beyond recovery.

I'd say I didn't find the system of conversations of Awakenings all that appealing, but it might be due to its implementation. I just hope the new system didn't go the ME 2 route, with companions having a single line comentary about very specific things in very specific points.

'so there's less need to keep visiting every follower's base to check and re-check if they have a conversation waiting'

I agree . It's was a chore going back to camp after each quest  in case to be missing something. No system are perfect so i agree.

We need to know  we can ask something before going there
So we don't get the whole ...

'I'm in the middle of Calibration , can you come back later?' .

I think it's break the immersion for the player. Because it's like metagaming . Always going back to ask a question. But we should be rewarded also .. So the approbation and rivality system it's perfect and it's was a nice touch in DA:O .

I think it's a nice when the game tell you.

-Hey you might be able to ask a set of question to Isabella right now .. She's available ..

and not the whole...

Hmm maybe i should visit that turian downstair
Go downstair
Ask him what's up
and he answer you..

In the middle of my calibration
..

Yes i'm using Mass effect 2 because it's the best exemple i can think for describing this whole problem.
One years ago i discussed a lot about this on the forum .. and how i hated doing the whole psy run through the camp .

I'm quite happy with this change.

Not while I'm in the room, please.
