When I tried it the first time, I was level 4, too. OMG.
It's no dishonour to go elsewhere and come back later with some more levels.

Yeah. I think it is time to sound "retreat", build up and come back later. Gladys is a pain to keep alive! She dies so quickly. And the AI for the enemies is very good. They rush right past the tanks and go for the magic users, and surround them, so that after the initial spells are cast, the magic users are reduced to melee combat.

You purchased the spell, which improves respectively builds up armour for spellcasters (I don't know the english name for it), right?

I don't think so. I'll look for it.This is a game that is going to be fun. The way an RPG should be, hard to progress, tough fights and lots of quests.

Ok, mild spoiler:
Check the alchemist at the big square all the way down southeast of central town.
The spell I was talking about ("armatrutz" in the German version) is ESSENTIAL for all caster classes.

Thanks. You're a real help. I'll have to go to more Oktoberfest celebrations this year and practice my German.

Once you have the spell, keep it maxed. You really can't max every spell, but this is one.

Sounds like a plan. One nice thing about the game, no crashes, freezes or any other buggy behaviour. You can concentrate on the enjoying the game without worrying about what is going to happen or when it is going to happen.

Yeah, it was rockstable since release. The patches made it even better.

Level 8 is about the right level to take on the giant rat. With Paralysis spell you can turn one or two rats to stone, this will stop the big rat from calling more.
The rats can inflict a wound when they manage to bite, this is what makes the fight so tough since on a lower level your character won't have Willpower high enough to resist the wound.

I retreated and will come back to there later after a few level ups. Definitely not the game for the Hack and Slash fan. Lots of strategy and micro-managed tactical decisions to be made in combat.

The good news: When you follow the main quest, you will soon find semi-decent equipment, which will make things a bit easier.
Levels 7-9 are indeed a good range for the deeper rat-cellars.
As Virumor pointed out, "willpower" is a skill which is essential for tough fights.

Looks like I'll change strategies and then retry the harder side-quests later.
