I guess it depends on how you build your character. My DW Rangers are usually STR based, with good DEX and low WIS (not a big fan of Ranger's spell list), so Wood Elf is good there (and for any STR based dual wielder).
I rarely take more than 1 Barbarian level, multiclassing with Fighter or some class with heavy armor proficiency, so the DEX bonus isn't needed then (though STR is good, of course). But if you're going pure, yeah, they're a good race.
And to the OP: when picking the race, if you're going to multiclass, beware of XP penalties.
