I haven't heard much about this, and this might be an overdone topic, but is there a point to assault rifles other than the Vindicator? I'm not including the Revenant since that's a Collector ship weapon.
Based off of a Hardcore playthrough takes out barriers right away (one burst against Eclipse after 3 damage upgrades), kills in 2 bursts. Is there anything to the Avenger or GPR that can even match this?
I don't have the Mattock, so I can't compare that.
Why not use the Vindicator?

For me outside the mattock, the vindicator is the best of the assault rifles(not including the revenant). The GPR sucks IMO, it is a bag of ammo and that is it, the gun sucks too much outside that. The avenger isn't bad, but the vindicator fits my style better. If you get the firepower pack I think the mattock is the best. quick firing, virtually no recoil and easy to aim. For a soldier it is the best weapon in the game probably.

The mattock is unbelievable overpowered. No weapon in the game comes close to its versatility and power. The Vindicator is no match for the Mattock.
Before the Mattock came out, I took the Revenant on my first soldier playthrough and absolutely hated it. I loaded a previous save and chose the Widow and used the Vindicator for the rest of my soldier playthroughs. I absolutely detest the Revenant. I like my assault rifles to be accurate.

My theory is that the after the locust ended up making assault rifles obsolete, they designed the mattock to make them a valid choice as weapons training. Did it work? Undeniably. All the new Infiltrator and Soldier builds are evidence of that. But it did make the vindicator obsolete in the process. Shame.
I don't have the firepower pack or Kasumi DLC at the moment, so I'm using the vindicator and enjoying it.

Basically, the Vindicator is awesome in the hands of your squaddies, but if you're a soldier, it's all about the Mattock or Revenant.

Mattock is ridiculously overpowered (as far as one can use the term in singleplayer games) in the hands of a soldier (Adrenaline Rush+Mattock=Seven seconds of annihilation). But I guess for every other class utilizing it as a bonus weapon it is a suboptimal choice as using it without AR quickly drains the ammunition to zero.
Vindicator and Geth Pulse Rifle are better suited for non-soldiers in my opinion:
Vindicator packs enough punch and is deadly accurate enough to either pop out head-pops
The Geth Pulse Rifle on the other hands never runs out of ammunition and is easily the most clip-efficient weapon in the game. The variable rate-of-fire is something to get familiar with, but this weapon does shred away Shields and Barriers like there is no tommorow and still is highly accurate, just less "impactive" than the Vindicator and thus is basically the Avenger 2.0.
As for Revenant accuracy, I don't understand all the fuss about this weapon seemingly not hitting a barn's wall from inside.
Being soldier exclusive, AR makes the whole accuracy discussion more or less redundant as any weapon is pinpoint accurate in slow-motion anyway. And when not firing in AR, you are seriously mistaken if you think full automatic firing is the only way. The latter is spray'n'pray, but you can always burst fire via repeatedly tipping the fire-button like you would with the Mattock. The tremendous muzzle climb only sets in around one second of continued firing, so if you just tap quickly, you don't hit this trouble-zone and only sacrifice neglectable amounts of rate-of-fire (around 10% maybe, haven't checked it, but sure doesn't feel like you are losing significant firepower whilst burst firing!).
Aim for the centre of mass and just quick-tap the fire-button and see the enemy go down in a rain of lead (or whatever material those projectiles are sliced from). Sure, two or three rounds will miss here and there, but the bulk of projectiles WILL hit the enemy.
That way, the Revenant is as accurate as any other Assault Rifle without sacrificing it's superiour firepower and clipsize.

Well, if you're not a soldier, that means you have access to the Locust which does pretty much everything the Vindicator does but with 3 times as much ammo. It isn't quite as penetrating vs armour, but then you can just use the Mattock.

I'd use the Vindicator waay more if it could just hold more ammo. Damn, that is the make or breack aspect of this rifle

I feel that as a soldier, lack of SMG means that choosing vindicator will leave you without a weapon with high rate of fire, which is why I choose revanent. I can always use a sniper rifle to get head shots.

Yeah, the ammo limit on it is way to severe and the amount of ammo you piclk up from each thermal clip is also way to limited.
In ME3 I hope they increase the Vindicator's ammo thirst to a level less than that of the Mattock. That way the Vindicator would still have a tactical role as the best assault rifle when it comes to picking off targets in cover even though the Mattock would have an advantage when it comes to rapidly downing charging targets.
As it is the Vindicator simply can't compete with the Mattock because the Mattock is actually more ammo efficient since it can deal much more damage from a single thermal clip than the Vindicator can.
None the less I'd still take the Vindicator over any assault rifle except for the Revenant or Mattock since the Avenger, GPR and Collector Rifle are all very underpowered. I hope that in ME3 they balance the weapons better so that we don't end up with so many obsolete weapons like we did in ME2.

I also used the Vindicator over the Revenant, but the decision was also partly influenced by the Widow.
On Insanity, I just found Vindicator + Widow better than Revenant + Viper or the Mantis IMHO.

I usually use vindicator, even though mattrock is better. I love the vindicator. (though I actually think its better against armour then the mattock, though that may just be me)

With the Accuracy Upgrade, the Vindicator is a beast.
For me being on 360, I sometimes had trouble landing all three rounds on the target, so I've wasted more rounds per trigger pull than missing or using too many rounds with the Mattock. Eight trigger pulls and you empty the Vindicator's thermal clip. And then, currently in ME2, Shep carries the equivalent of 4 Spare Thermal Clips with the Vindicator and Mattock, and 10 Spare Thermal Clips with the Avenger.
So from a shot for shot management perspective, I am more efficient with the Mattock.
Gameplay wise I understand the idea with balancing the rifles, but I'd prefer to draw from a different thermal clip pool in ME3, with my personal preference being a Universal Thermal Clip pool shared between all the weapons (except Heavy Weapons of course).

The vindicator used to be the **** until the mattock came along. Plus, the burst fire is really annoying when you are in close quarters (should be able to toggle to auto and use it like the avenger as well).
