Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you're here in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

What? What!?

I swear I didn't cry either!

The only thing about Celine Dion which makes me cry is the knowledge that she's (allegedly) sold over 200 million albums.

I guess it depends on what you mean by macho. The men I associate with--Marines--are perhaps more secure or something because they're pretty accepting. I know two or three "macho" guys that go to clubs, drink, chase women, work out in the gym regularly, play sports (I could go on), but also play "nerdy" video games.

I think there's a kind of macho that is very insecure and worries about their peer's perceptions. I think there's another kind of macho that just doesn't care because real men play whatever video games they enjoy.

So they consider them nerdy, though? That's my point. Not that there's something wrong with it or something people wouldn't do... but that they don't consider it the equivalent of watching a game or going to a club.

Extra slashes.  BSN doesn't like the backslash.

Yes, basically. The categorization doesn't really translate because everything is visual now.

Now that I have your attention, I will inform you that yes I am a woman, and before you thrust your penises at me in protest for luring you to this topic, I have a story, and a question for you that relates to Dragon Age II and my gender.

So I recently worked in a video games store. Dream retail job while I studied. I've played games since the Megadrive II, and have been a fan of Bioware since KOTOR.

A man in his 20's approached me at the counter and asked me.

"You! Woman!" (well ok he didn't say that I may be exaggerating  just a little.)

Anyways this guy came up to me at the counter and asked me what games I was looking forward to in the new year.

Since DA:2 is at the top of my list, I happily informed him of my excitement for Bioware's next title.

"Oh of course!" he scoffed.

'It is a girls game."

"It's a what?" I enquired, instantly regretting my actions.

"Like Dragon Age. It was a girls game. I'm not playing that ****."

My brain began to flick through the the games I had filed under "girl" for quick reference when recommending games to customers.

Titles such as "Style Boutique" and "Cooking Mama" instantly sprang to mind. However, I couldn't find Dragon Age under 'girl" nor could I find it filed under "****."

My inner fan girl stirred. Hush I told it. He was entitled to his opinion.

"I bet that's the only game you know too. All the girls are playing it."

I decided to pull out the big guns and asked the man if he knew Deus Ex?

"Yeah of course I know it. What have you played it?"

"Yes. I have. I've played many games in my time but I don't understand your claims that DA:O and DA:II are somehow games made specifically for girls."

The man thought for a moment, and luckily no one else had stepped into the shop to disturb our showdown.

"It's because of that romance ****. And the ****s. What is with that?"

I definitely regretted my decision to continue this conversation.

A mental checklist entered my brain as to what parts of DA:O floated my boat and it went something like this -

* Swords
* Excessive blood animations
* Cool finishing moves
* Storyline
* Alistair

Yes, the man was right. There was indeed a swag of romancable characters, and some of them were gay.

"I bet the lesbian made it manly." I offered.

"Nah, just not my kind of game." The man submitted.

Which had me thinking. Yes games are catered to suit a prominent male audience, however, could games like DA:O and the upcoming DA:2 be surpassing that, by simply creating a game that appealed to both genders? I have stumbled across male gamers on the internet who have been delighted to find their female partners running their Warden through the Dead Trenches when before the only game they tried had been Farmville.

I personally have always been more inclined to play narrative or plot driven games i.e. Heavy Rain, the Silent Hill series, Bioshock. However, my former boyfriend also enjoyed these games.

He on the other hand, would also play C.O.D and God of War, where as I was more inclined to simply watch those games then play them.

Is content specifically designed to appeal to women being inserted into male orientated games in the hope that more women will play them? Or are the elements found in most role playing games just more appealing to women on a whole?

It would be nice to not have to worry about targeting a "specific" audience when marketing a product, but I will say this. I enjoy Dragon Age immensely, and look forward to Dragon Age II, and I don't really care if it's meant for my gender or not.

To the man who dropped his balls on my counter and proclaimed that Dragon Age was just not manly enough for him I can say is this...

SHUT UP WOMAN... GET ON MY HAWKE!

 this is just the sort of negative attention the game doesnt need.  It isnt a girls game at all, but the percentage of gamers out therethat are obviously ignorant like the guy in the store, give it a bad rep when it doesnt deserve one.

I was wondering about the double backslash as well. Speaking of backslashes, does anyone else cringe whenever they hear a reporter on TV read a web address as "social dot bioware dot com BACKSLASH forum"?

Never encountered that on TV, but one of my politics profs kept doing that. Made me furious.

That guy has some mental issues. He thinks that playing games that women like would make himself looks *gay*. This is so stupid way of reasoning. It's ok to dislike a game because of the style that you don't like. But taking a gender argment is so wrong.

Bioware games are made for anybody who likes RPGs and good story telling (well, maybe less Mass Effect 2 thought). Giving choices to decide is what is important so we can shape the story to our liking. And more choices we have and better it is. It's good that Bioware was really inclusive in most of their games. I hope this continue in that direction and that the Fundamentlist will see the real truth.

Now, with the end of Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2, I hope they will make Jade Empire 2 :)

This is why I turned over my former store and quit the business in the first place. Out of many subgroups which fall under the "imbecile gamer" category, the "idiots who think any game that requires more than two brain cells to be used is automatically a grrl game" group is one of the most infuriating. Like a man can only play games where you simply pull the trigger, pull the trigger and then find more ammo so you can keep pulling the trigger for a while longer.

This is exactly what happens when parents raise their children like growing bryophyte. Frigging basement mosses.

It bothers me only slightly less when they say "forwardslash".  Seriously?  What's wrong with "slash"?

I like to play with girls :::::wink, wink:::: WOW, that's a great pick up line. "Hey baby, you want to play some dragon age with me? "

Haha. Well, not so funny when you actually DID something similar. Or I had know this girl for quite while and... Well, we ended up playing through Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil and Prince of Persia. Well, needless to say I had played my cards completely wrong and today she is my best friend, I guess somewhere I never wanted it to work the other way...

Well, I must say that I enjoyed your post and the dilemma. Well, technically, I guess it appeals "more" to women, than many other games, with romances that are more well-developed and deep than most games, at least they are not as stereotypical as in many, many other games. And I can see how games like GoW, CoD or Crysis would be more appealing to someone who is pumped up with testosterone. But beyond that, I think it comes down to taste and ignorance:
The taste point is easy to make, different kinds of people like different kinds of games. I like all sorts of games, I think the only genre I've never gotten into is puzzle games, that to me seem like an enormous waste of time. But what I love more than any other games are deep, immersive, story-driven RPGs, my aforemention friend, however, finds this genre to be boring, I tried to socialize her with Bioware games, but it hasn't seemed to work.
The ignorant point is that of the casual or blind gamers. Casual, being people who know nothing of gaming, and will get into it playing casual games, never giving the more serious games a chance. The blind gamers are people like that man you mentioned, people who have found their kind of game, and are thus blind to anything opposed to that, whether the reason is sexuality or fanboyism is irrelevant, the point is that they probably never sat down, took their time and actually played different kinds of games, making it hard to know, whether they'd actually like them.

I know of many men who think all RPGs are girls games because to think, strategize and plan- and do tactics style battle that is not manly.

Because if you are a Man, then anything less than Full Frontal Assault is...well...totally Unmanly.

I have come to the conclusion, DA needs a manly anthem.

Lets get down to business. To defeat the qun.

LOL !

Oh yeah, so Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great were all *women* of course.  I bet George Washington was a woman in disguise.  LOL, maybe they should try to use their brain a little more and discover things they could like....

Of course. Unless it was a full frontal assault with a sizeable, impressive 2 H weapon thrust out, and you did it wearing nothing but leather underpants and a cape= it was totally unmanly. SO THERE!!!
