i like to think that our gamers appeal to the story-lover in all of us. We write darned good stories and darned good characters, and when you're playing a game as big and immersive and full of stuff as BioWare games are, you want awesome characters to see you through it all. You want the Hollywood moments, you want the adrenaline and satisfaction of kicking butt and taking names, you want the feeling of being in control of the PC's destiny. Escapist entertainment, gotta love it, no matter who you are.

This is so true.  And you write good stories because you have mix gendered writing teams. I cried at the end of KOTOR and loved it because it soooo resembled the end of the first Star War movie...

If quality is womanly then DAO is womanly...

That's...so amazing...and SO sad. Seriously? He must have heard about it only from female gamer friends, I guess...

And at the same time, sort of cool, that there are that many females playing it.

I don't think guys like him have female gamer friends. He must've heard it over Xbox live.

Exactly... my husband and I both love to
play Bioware games because of the immersion. It is not like reading a story, it
is like being part of it and changing it with every choice. B)

I tried God of War 3. Couldn't finish it, despite it having some elements I really liked, it just wasn't my thing.  And I love games.  Is it a boy game? Or did I simply want more character awareness that day or more story?  Who knows.

Towards the end it does try to make Kratos a more multi-dimensional character, it's a bit klunky of a fit with the rest of the game... and as you've proven anyways, it's so far into the game that most people who might enjoy the game more after seeing that side of the story, never get to seeing it. The first game was probably the most accessible of the series because Kratos is more sympathetic at the beginning than at the end, rather than the other way around. Boss kills in three are a lot more fun though... they're almost as fun as a virulent walking bomb spell. :)

I'm male (gay, if that means anything) and I enjoy a wide range of games. I do prefer games with great stories, but I also don't mind shooting people in the head (granted, Uncharted 2 is the only game like that I truly love and that game's got a great story). I have friends of both genders who play games of different kinds as well.

Bottom line, I don't really think gender has much to do with what games you enjoy (although it might be a contributing factor).

This... well actually no, despite having never owned a game in the series I like Halo for too many odd reasons to list.

Now concerning men playing men's games. If college has taught me anything it's that dudes/bros/etc. do not, will not listen to or read the relevant backstory of the games they play.

Nope, at max I'd totally be down for taking the OP out to lunch to commend her on what she did. So yeah good job calling that guy out OP.

I know many couples who play videogames together (both co-op and playing the same game on different systems at the same time). Many of them are BioWare game fans, and usually it's the girl who's consistently farther ahead in the game than the guy! or maybe I just know some very odd, and awesome, girls.

I sympathize deeply with the op. This is why I hate walking into gamestop.

Although I didn't have to wait in line last time I was there...

It's probadly a combination of both...I know some girls...sisters in fact who play a variety of games...one likes fighting games Tekken, another LOVES rpgs like Kingdom Hearts, while the other likes Silent Hill type, and then there is one that doesn't play them at all...but all are in agreement about Dragon Age and Mass Effect being awesome...with a fare amount of prodding from me about those games as well. ;)

i agree with you, Roth. I only like one multiplayer like Halo. And that is Rainbow Six. But i am not a man, either! ^.-

I play like 90% story driven singleplayer games, or something like that. Hell, the only game I'm playing multiplayer on now is Starcraft 2.

Star Craft to is EPIC. I squee when i play it. ^.-

Well, my sister is a big fan of it as well, have been since the first one :P

Me too! My dad got me into it when i was alot younger. I am sooo glad they made a second one! Im..gonna..*Squees* haha, sorry!

Always feel free to squee :)

Haha, i like, live by that! :P

I don't know if the post started off on a good note by saying 'Now don't waggle your penises at me'. That's asking people to attack the post.

But regardless, narrow minded opinions like the one your male customer had exist everywhere. Good for you for standing up to the jackass

It's a special breed. We call them women.
I would link to the Henry Rollins definition at this point, but for once, YouTube failed me.

This pretty sums up me and my wife as well, minue the girl being farther ahead than me. I have collectively beaten DAO and DAA (plus DLC) 3 times from start to finish. She just now finished DAO and is currently working on DAA. We both consider DAO to be our favorite game and new series of all time, and that's saying a lot for her considering her old favorite game was Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Beating a Zelda game on a woman's fave game of all time list in an amazing feat lol.

I'd say that Bioware's games have always been designed to appeal to both genders. Since there are a lot of mainstream games that appear to be marketed mostly to men, I suppose that might make them somewhat girly in a relative sense. It's interesting that Bioware's games and CRPG's in general do seem to have a fair feminine following (though I doubt they're a majority) given that pen 'n paper RPG's were pretty male-oriented. I've known a few women who play (have one in my current play-by-post campaign actually) but not a lot.

Back to the OP now. I used to be the store manager of a Gamestop and my wife currently works part time at a Gamestop. All the time I would be working with a female employee and they would flat out tell them "No, I'll just wait for that guy." talking about me. The sexist mindset of "girls don't know anything about video games" is indeed everywhere. Most of the people I hang out with are girls that play games, not one of which is Cooking Mama, Nintendogs, or any of the pre-decided "girl games". It's sad that the stigma of girls don't play games is still out there, but you know....Se la vi.

I totally agree with the guy in the OP's post. The second I started playing Dragon Age, my penis vanished! Just like that! I couldn't find it anywhere, not even in the seat cushions! My once glorious lifestyle of orgies with lingerie models and driving monster trucks ended that day. Now I just do needlework and watch American Idol. Thanks a lot, Bioware.

On a semi-serious note, there ain't nothing more manly than role playing games.

The situation is a little absurd, but I don't think we can generalize any serious preferences among guys or girls re: gaming.

What I think is that right now gaming is more mainstream for guys but not for girls; so there are nerdy and non-nerdy guy gamers, but the majority of girl gamers tend toward the nerdy side.
