Oh no! DA is a girly game! AM I A GIRLY MAN NOW?! This is an outrage!

Well to be on topic... This game isn't for girls or anything like that. Just because it has "romance ****" it does not make a game for girls. I mean look at movies, books etc. any piece of fiction that has a big depth to the story. Well yes! Most of it do have romances in there! And guess what! IT'S PART OF THE STORY! Oh wait, Men watch/read that too! Now I'm no guy that sheds tears over titanic and all that crap, but I don't see why not go for the romances in game if they are there? I mean if it can be part of my characters story that I want to roleplay why not?

Besides, the romances are optional and if you don't want them, don't pursue them

...I have got to use this in a sentence at some point.

*coughs*

Well, as for the topic at hand, I'm going to have to say that a game should be default work for either gender. Rejecting a game because of romance is, I think, more a sign of immaturity than any sort of "manliness". Or some people just aren't as romantically inclined as others.

As far as Cooking Mama and Style Boutique goes, I'd say that the former doesn't cater to a specific gender, while the latter sounds like a shallow gimmick title. That said... I'm not going to say that there isn't a chance of me enjoying playing around with fashion for a bit. >_>

*coughs again*

But now that I think about it... I do know more girls who play Dragon Age than Mass Effect. Granted, said girls also played Baldur's Gate and/or Icewind Dale, so it might just be a matter of them rather playing something they feel more familiar with. DA was said to be the spiritual successor of BG, after all.

And they love Alistair, which makes sense... because he's a lovely character. Not as high up on the list of characters I'd go gay for as The 10th Doctor or Captain Jack Harkness, but he tops all other male BioWare characters at least. (He's just adorable.)

It's a consequence of our range of experience.

I literally don't interact socially with anyone who isn't a gamer.  The closest thing I have to a non-gamer friend is my attorney, and he was actually my DM in high school.

I'm honestly jealous you've been able to find a serious group of people like that to be friends with. Of the few people I know who are gamers, none are interested in RPGs.

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you're here in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on

...

What? What!?

I swear I didn't cry either!

Ah yes the joy of creating specific DOS startup files for games to free up as much memory as possible. I remember I had a DOS startup menu of 10-15 different configurations for different games.

No matter how much I fiddled with those startup files, I couldn't ever get that one Jurassic Park game to run on my PC...

That was...EPIC haha. I so agree with you, though! Even though i am a girl. But you really don't have to romance if you don't want to. To some people, it makes the game play experience better for them. Right? So, no, you are not a girly man! :P

My story is not as happy. My ex went into ''what are you hiding from me mode,'' and since it was ME1 I was hiding and she could see the case, it went to an awkward conversation about me playing the game for the fantasy romances. Stuff like this is why the word ex is being used now.

Edit:

Ooh! And she found out about the Liara romance, which made her covertly suspect I was into... furries for a while. I didn't know what those were until that conversation, which made things all the more uncomfortable...

At any rate, as a rule I now never play video-games around things that breathe.

Wow, isn't she overly paranoid. Some girls really do get on my nervous with the way they act around pc games. It's just a game, what did she think? You'd elope with the Dragon Age box in tow?

As to the OP. It sounds like that guy is a general a*******. Says more about him than you or DA imo.
I can see no way that DA is more girly than manly.
Besides, not all girls want to play The Sims and stop only to make our man a sandwich

People have a weird idea of mainstream on this forum because how strongly we tend toward the extreme end of our hobbies. But things like FPS, in terms of how the really macho type guys will see them, fall on the nerdy side.

Sports games are the only acceptable video-game that I've seen at this level.

I guess it depends on what you mean by macho. The men I associate with--Marines--are perhaps more secure or something because they're pretty accepting. I know two or three "macho" guys that go to clubs, drink, chase women, work out in the gym regularly, play sports (I could go on), but also play "nerdy" video games.

I think there's a kind of macho that is very insecure and worries about their peer's perceptions. I think there's another kind of macho that just doesn't care because real men play whatever video games they enjoy.

I was wondering about the double backslash as well. Speaking of backslashes, does anyone else cringe whenever they hear a reporter on TV read a web address as "social dot bioware dot com BACKSLASH forum"?
