And give the alicorn competition? The hell you say.

Robot Alicorn Attack!

that is too scary to even imagine, tbh. Plus, no idea what soundtrack would do it justice.

Immedaite Music, Epic Score, Two Steps From Hell, West One Music, Brand X Music, PostHaste Music, etc?

I'm sure one of them out there could swing it. =]

Unicorns? There are enough evil forces at work in Thedas already. Everyone knows unicorns can't be trusted.

First it's all, "Oh hey, let's go to the magical candy mountain!"
Step 2: They steal your kidney.

THIS is why I prefer developer interviews to previews. Information without spoilers.

As a person that lurves playing enchantment focused mages in D&D, I find the treatment of charm effect flinging mages in Thedas one of my favorite aspects of the lore. It was nice the staff put so much thought into it, as it generally glossed over in first party D&D materials despite the massive moral implications of such spells. How the DA team came up with Thedas is awesome too. This kicking down the sandcastle talk has me intrigued. I think this is the second time it has come up. The curiosity is gnawing on my soul.

Horses as stationary, well, as background simply to flesh out an area I think is a great idea.  I totally see the point about having fans going " Ohhhh!  Horsey!!! "  and wanting to ride it.  Having something right in front of them that they can't use (which, actually also explains more than just a few of the "Why can't I romance *blank*  when he/she clearly wants me? " threads....) would be tempting to more than a few people. lol

The way I see it, is horses in a game like this would replace the map and make it more open world. Who cares about showing the party behind you, simply believe they are there.  (if that is what would really make the game better, whether it would or not I find questionable).

THAT said, in Assassin's Creed II that I played over the holidays ( yes, i am only on assassins creed 2 *insert shame here*, ) I hated when I had to ride the bloody horse to get to the next town objective in Italy despite the horses being cool .  I love open world in some games and some times... but in a game like this where it is perfectly long enough without the hassle of travel, meh.

Just my opinion for this particular game though.  To have them in stables, or outside gates or whatnot would look good though.  Just add an animation to have the horse kick your character away from it and you are gold. :D

Indeed. There's a place for open worlds, but a number of games have used them simply in place of "fast travel" so they become mindless commutes.

I know there are some producers that say if you have expensive content then everyone should see it or it’s not worth creating. I don’t know if I agree with that…in fact that’s a lie, I don’t agree with that! [sighs] [MM - I can see their point!] I can see their point too and it makes sense except, especially for people who love playing role playing games, the fact that there was another path that existed, even if I don’t take it, still has value to me.

I feel obliged to respond to this. The only developer that I personally have seen say "you shouldn't develop content that most people won't see" is Blizzard. When they say that, though, they refer to content that people won't see because it's too hard or requires too much of a time investment. Imagine if the entire Blackstone Irregular's chain was so difficult and time-consuming that only 5% of the players ever did it.

Good interview, though. I know I was excited to learn Bioware was working on their own IP, for the reasons stated in the interview and more. Although it was kinda cool to run into characters like Drizzt, I don't think it was worth the negative side effects.

Yeah, the mentality for MMORPG's is different because they don't really care if you "finish" the game or not.  (In fact, they'd kind of prefer that you didn't.)  But on the other hand you don't want to make your new content so challenging that only the top 5 raiding guilds in the world can actually get through it.

DDO has a very peculiar design philosophy when it comes to what they call "epic" content--it's stuff you can only access when you're at the level cap, and it's designed not so much to be challenging as to be fooking RIDICULOUS--it basically forces you to cheat.  And they have actually DESIGNED THE QUESTS that have epic versions SO THAT YOU CAN CHEAT.  No kidding.  Almost all of them have little tricks that were purposefully put in by the designers and enable you to do things like skip 9/10ths of the combat.  You wouldn't want to do that when you're doing the base quest at-level, because you'd skip all the nice bonus xp.  But at level cap, you're not GETTING xp so HECK YEAH SKIP THAT SUCKER.

The information about THEDAS is a little dated, but this..

When we were initially designing Origins we came up with a temporary name for the world that we all hated [MM - Can I ask what it was?] I don’t remember…it started with a P…

My guess Pandora .

The argument there, unfortunately, quickly becomes 'HEY THERE'S A HORSE BEHIND THAT FENCE. Can I ride it? What? I can't ride horses! This game is stupid!' If you show players something that they can't use (that would make some logical sense for them to use), they're going to wonder why they can't use it.

Recall how Ultima IX did it.

In earlier Ultima games, you could ride horses.  They were tile-based, so that was easy.  Ultima VIII was in a different setting, so horses didn't matter.  But in U9 suddenly they were back in the original setting, which had horses you could ride, but a 3D game where riding horses was a huge problem.

So they killed all the horses.  They created some back stroy about how a tyrannical lord had ordered all the horses hanged, and throughout the world you'd see oversized gallows with horse corpses swinging from them.

Problem solved.
