 Just got Mass effect.
It's never run.  I've tried XP compatability, I've tried re-installing from Steam, I've tried disabling UAC, I've tried admin mode but nothing's worked

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH  Application Name: MassEffect.exe  Application Version: 1.2.20608.0  Application Timestamp: 4a55fea1  Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Reasonably high end spec

Has a q9450 processor
4GB
5870 ATI card
a 8800GT as a Physics Processing unit
128 GB OCZ Vertex2 SSD
W7 64

I'm clean out of ideas.  I'm usually fairly good with sorting things like this.  Having Steam offer "Run the game" or "See support pages" is not confidence inspiring!

Tenuous line of thought: Mass Effect 2 uses PhysX. I am not sure if it is even programmed to allow the physics to run on the GPU rather than the CPU, but if it can, perhaps your unorthodox set-up is causing trouble? I always figured Nvidia was blowing smoke when they claimed possible incompatibilities as the reason to stop supporting GPU PhysX in tandem with an ATI graphics card, but perhaps there was something to that after all.

Is there any way of disabling that 8800 physics GPU and making sure apps can't access it and its drivers?

I did try disabling the 8800 in control panel, thinking that could be the problem. No joy.

"Be aware that you can cause permanent damage to your computer system if the AppCrash error is left unrepaired."

This screams scareware at me - I think you should edit your post moondoggie it sounds like seriously bad advice.

I've just installed UT3 and that's giving me an Appcrash too.

Hmmmm.

I just offer advice you don't have to take it. If you were worried about what you are downloading you could always check the file before opening it.

Engine-wide problem then. What drivers are you using?

Edit: And d'oh, just realized this is ME1, not ME2. I believe ME1 used PhysX as well, though.

Re moondoggy - that site has all the hallmarks of a scareware\\malware site. As I hinted, unless you trust the site and have experience and have run the application, it is a bad idea to post such a link. The ratio of posters to lurkers on the internet is huge. I would not run that program becasue I am not techy enough to decompile it which is the only way to know if it is trustworthy. Others who might google this page might well run that programme without thought.

Re the problem - I think I've found the cause.

Unreal engine 3 is not compatible with kaspersky 2011 it seems. So back to 2010 it is.

Sorry to bump an old post but rhiridflaidd you are my super hero!  I have been searching all last night and all today for why I can't get mass effect to work.  I grumbled at those who only had to run it in administrator mode, I tried EVERYTHING with no luck!  I was about to give up when I found this post!  My old kis 2010 was up almost a month ago so I figured I'd give the 2011 trial a shot, I'm so glad I didn't buy it yet!

I uninstalled it, rebooted and tired running mass effect . . I literally had to cover my eyes the anticipation of let down was so huge but alas, miracle of miracles it worked!

Mwah!  Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!<3
