Ok this is about as annoying as it gets - I'm playing through for the first time and ME1 crashes when it's about to do a cutscene of me landing on Ilos. I've tried the suggested run as admin setting and run in compatibility mode, Either way I get the following:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: MassEffect.exe
Application Version: 1.2.20608.0
Application Timestamp: 4a55ff66
Fault Module Name: MassEffect.exe

This is a brand new Digital Storm machine:

Win 7 64 bit
6GB Ram
i7 3.2Ghz quad
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480

I should also mention I got this via download through Gamestop - maybe this was my big mistake?

Any ideas would be appreciated - approaching the big climax and *poop* :(

Sounds like a corrupted file. I'd suggest a re-install.

That sounds like a video card problem. Did you try to download an older driver and see if that prevents the crash.

Which version of DirectX you running. ME specifcally requiers 9.0c. It can run with later versions, but issues can be expected.

As previous posters have mentioned, have you tried another save game to see if it gets replicated, and have you tried rolling teh driver back to an older version?

Another thing to try is change the CPU affinity to single.

Are you running with admin rights?

Win7/64 seems to have more issues running ME1 than any other windows version. There are a few posts on these forums with some fixes you could try.

From what i can gather from the last person who came on with this problem it is caused by some sort of clash of programs with the game. For the last guy it was his anti virus program

Yeah, but wasn't that guy crashing at program start? I doubt someone who's made it all the way to Ilos is dealing with an engine incompatibility.

Hi all - thanks much for all the responses. Fixed the problem.

When I got this machine it had 2 hard drives - primary is solid state, secondary the old standard. The primary doesn't have much space so I just use that for the OS. But I've had some quirky issues including blue screens during some of my office and Adobe apps which I have installed on the secondary. Both drives are in a hot swap bay, so I ordered another hard drive, a duplicate of the secondary it came with. I uninstalled and deleted everything from drive 2, keeping my saves and settings in My Documents, and reinstalled on drive 3. Loaded up and it worked - just completed the game for the first time - great stuff.

Long story short, I think my 2nd drive has come corruption going on - maybe from getting banged around during shipping - who knows.
