The Arcane Warrior met in the Proving was somewhat tough if one did not have a decent party configuration. And the one with Spellweaver can be a difficult encounter due to his party config, and if your team has a poor choice of spells.
Is Archane Warrior worth it as a subclass?

a properly build AW hit harder then a warrior or rogue ,you only lack the special abilities of a warrior/rogue .A well build AW will hit harder (white damage) ,has better survivability then warriors or rogues and still have all the crowd control of a mage.
miasma and speed are the sustainables you need to get. dual wield daggers to get maximum damage from the flame enchant and runes

I thought at first that it would be rubbish, but then I had Morrigan pick up the more powerful armors and swords and the game was so pwned on insanity that it was rediculous.

I have always tried to balance my Off-Spells with my Def-Spells for a Mage, and the Arcane Warrior allows them to act as a damage dealer without too much concern; Alistair and Sten fight along side said mage and Wynne heals - an optimal party I think as I've never had any problems thus far.
Main character: Arcane Warrior and Spirit Healer
Sten: Champion and Berserker
Alistair: Champion and Templar
Wynne: Spirit Healer (I've never used Blood Magic)
