Hi. After just completing the original Mass Effect, I've really wanted to enjoy this game but after ten minutes or even less of play, the sound always starts to become more and more static filled. If it becomes too much, the mangled static sound accompanies lag and the game becomes even harder to play. Even Pre rendered cut scenes aren't prevented from this static.

I've already tried reinstalling the game twice, and downloading all recent drivers and updated my direct x.

I have

Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz
Clock Speed of 2384 MHz
Physical Memory  of 3.92 GB
Display Adapter: NVIDIA NVS 3100M
VRAM: 512 MB

My Sound Adapter is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Driver Version: 6.10.6261.0

My operating system is Windows 7 and I have DirectX 10.0.

I have downloaded the latest patch and have attempted to update my drivers but it appears they are all up to date as possible.

I've tried looking up help and it seems others have this problem but I have found a solution nowhere.

When you say you updated DirectX, do you mean you updated DirectX 9? That's the one you need and it's on the ME2 disc.

Also, what is your framerate? This game needs a decent framerate for audio to stay in sync. Low framerates can result in audio cut-off.

It should be noted that playing on notebooks is not advised and will not give you optimum performence, Most mobile graphics solutions are not geared towards gaming and won't give the performence required to enjoy the game properly.

If there are no solutions it may be that your notebook is just not up to the task.

I have about 30-40 fps during combat but it drops to 20 during dialogue for some reason. Audio cut off is a problem but it only occurs when the static starts, so the main problem is with the static rather than audio cut off. I've been able to go up to half an hour before any static and audio cut off occurs in the game, though usually it starts immediately.

When I say I updated directx I mean directx 11. Does Mass effect only work with Directx9? I'll try it if so.

And I'm aware it's preferable to use a desktop, I was hoping I'd be able to play Mass Effect on my notebook because it's played much more taxing games before and it meets most of the recommended requirements and all of the minimum.

DirectX 9 is seperate from other versions. DirectX 10 or 11 is not enough, you really need to install the DirectX 9 version from the disc.

Ok, I installed directx 9 from the disc. Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem, I even forced the game to run directx 9 just in case.

You havent registered the game on the forums. That leads us to conclude you are running a dodgy, pirated version. If you own a legit copy, register it and we will see what we can do to help you. Otherwise, go away and fix the problem yourself.

I'm not running a dodgy, pirated version, I had simply not registered it. I only came to this forum for help when I couldn't find any after searching for awhile. I've registered it now.

Just want to say the problem has been solved. Nothing technical in the strictest sense, but while my laptop can run the game fine, it had troubling venting the heat. Propping it up so the bottom is exposed to open air has helped stopped the static and cut off. The Audio card must of been overheating. I guess I thought the graphics would go first if something was overheating, that's what happened to me last time.
