I find myself asking this question a lot.

A lot of folks seem to think that we'll simply gather a fleet and under Shepard's inspired leadership simply beat out the Reapers by our combined military force. Now that's all well and good, except for the fact that the Reapers have destroyed every, and I mean every civilization before us. And really I'm sure some of them were more technologically advanced then us and or had larger military armadas. So how exactly can we beat the Reapers by military might? I mean one Reaper and a small Geth fleet crippled the Council's strongest fleets.

True we do and probably still will maintain control of the Citadel and Mass Relays thus still allowing us travel. But I doubt we'll be able to travel freely much once the Reapers come as they'll likely guard the Relays. It does help us from being utterly cut off and annihilated right away though. And while yes we have now scavanged spme Reaper technology from the remains of Sovereign and the Collectors I don't think it will help that much. After all the Reapers plan on us using their technologies. Even assuming most ships could be armed better with weapons capable of harming the Reapers, you gotta remember that there are thousands of Reapers. Each one essentially being the equivalent of a Dreadnought, actually more so due to the Reapers high speed, manuverability, kinetic barrier, and weapon strength. Each Reaper is bigger and more powerful then the Destiny Ascension and there are literally like a good thousand of them.

I can't see us defeating the Reapers by purely military means. Even if every single race is united and we put all fleets together it won't be enough. Really unless each Reaper has a convient thermal exhaustport and we have a bunch of starfighters armed with photon torpedos, I don't forsee their being any miracle victory.

However don't completely misunderstand me. I think it will still be crucial to build a fleet of some sort to hold the Reapers off. Which means Shepard will need to rally as many allies as he/she can. However I see this more or less being a last ditch effort to buy Shepard time to find a way to stop the Reapers. I mean there's going to have to be some sort of outside means if we're going to actually stop them. Either we find the Reapers weakness or we don't and all die. And seeing as how in ME2 we didn't really find out much more about the Reapers, Shepard is basically still in the same position as at the end of ME1.

Some of them were more advanced in some ways (tech advancement isn't linear "leveling up", it's not like being more advanced in one way implies you're more advanced in others), but this time we've got the Reapers own offensive technology in the form of Thanix. Other races prior to us were unable to coordinate because the Relay system was shut down by the Reapers, whereas this time this hasn't happened (although I suppose it still could, but we've got no reason to believe it has in ME3 since the other races are apparently unaffected since they're starting with Earth).

We've also got several factions with advance warning (The Geth, the council races, the Batarians might know via Leviathan depending on how that went down) and might be taking steps to develop new weapons behind the scenes to counter them.

The reason we want a military victory is because pulling out a Deus Ex Machina victory with the magical Prothean artefact or some hidden Reaper off-switch they hide in their butt-cracks would be super lame as an ending to the trilogy.

if the entire krogan population gathered and hit a reaper with one simultaneous headbutt, the reaper will go down for sure.

The protheans' communications were cut before they had any idea they were under attack. By the time they found out, it was already too late. Shepard has bought some time. Even though the council officially dismissed his claims, Mordin thinks they just don't want to cause a panic and actually believe Shepard. In the meantime Cerberus is doing research on the Reapers. The civilization's biggest weapon is that they are probably the first to know about the Reaper invasion in advance, thanks to the protheans. They are prepared.

This started well... :D

I don't have any idea how to fight Reaper ships, but I think finding way to stop or slow Reaper indoctrination would be very important part of winning the war.

I hope it's not a all-out assault... that'd be so unrealistic and cheesy.

But something like a virus would be bull**** and cheap too.

I think I already know I'm going to be disappointed.

Why does everyone always use the battle for the citadel as an excuse? Thanix cannons will provide a GIANT leap against the reapers. I don't mean a small bonus but a HUGE bonus, the reason sovereign took an entire fleet was because we only used projectiles.

Cerberus found that weapon that took out the derelict reaper. I am sure that will come into play.

I believe we will be forced into choosing earth survival or demise. At the expense of something with equally serious implication. Also it will be a military victory of some sort. Shepard may die.

If EA screws with the Bioware team more than I am sure they already do we will all be disappointed.

Then again a lot of disappointment has come out of ME2 for a lot of people. Not everyone will be happy with everything but as long as the majority is happy EA wont care. It is EA after all.

At the end of ME3 all the reapers will be winning, and just as Harbinger or whoever else is about to kill Shepard ...

Morgan Freeman's voice comes up and talks about how little cells present on the earth make all the super advanced aliens sick and they all grey up and die.

Then Shep goes to visit his ex wife with his extremely annoying anorexic kids.

...

-.-

Bonus points to anyone who gets the movie reference.

A possible counter would be to blow up some Mass Relays so they are stuck (temporarily) in a system, then doing some scifi wizardry like creating a black hole or something.

Or we could make a large group of Reapers follow a fleet of ships through a relay. Once our fleet gets onto the other side of the Relay we could have ships push the relay so that the exit point shots the Reapers into a star. Pow instant crispy Reaper.

And the reference was war or the worlds.

Mass relays cannot be destroyed as far as we know. The Mu relay got hit by a supernova and was merely moved with not as much as a scratch on it.

How do you fight an enemy that out numbers you, has superior weapons, has superior shields, and is capable of magic in order to push the plot?

1. Run away. Plenty of empty space to hide in till the Reapers finish doing their thing. Zero chance of finding everyone.

2. Virus. When in doubt, go unconventional on them. They are just machines, give them a cold and shoot them in the main guns so they blow up.

3. Dues Ex Machima. Have you written yourself into a corner? Thats ok, just make some stuff up and then say you had it planned like this all along.

That is all. There are no additional possibilities for a long term solution to their threat. Have a nice harvest.

Plenty of EDIeus Ex Machina potential in:

  • whatever EDI could have downloaded from the Cerberus team files on the derelict Reaper (whatever they recorded before being "husked"),
  • whatever TIM's people discovered while investigating the Collector Base (assuming you kept it),
  • whatever EDI could have downloaded from the Collector base, wether you blew it up or not,
  • whatever EDI could have downloaded from the Collector cruiser.
Now ME3 being a TPS, we can resonably guess that a dozen operatives with guns will somehow be able to tip the balance...

They'll either copy Stargate and use the mass relays to beat them. Or you'll use a virus. Or we'll get a **** all win weapon.

Love it!  It's like you ripped it out of my mind!

Harbinger:  Shepard, what is this emotion you humans call...love?
Shepard:  Come and sit next to me over here on my bed and I'll show you Harby...
*Shepard pulls out leopard-skin bed, champagne and puts on mood music*
Shepard:  Giggidy giggidy!

Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith will upload a virus, while smoking cigares. Shepard will nod to them in agreement. The End.
