I'm just thinking, since it's an EA advertisement for the SE/bonus character pre-order, that whoever made that ad for the DLC didn't have it set at a high enough resolution....

@Saibh: lol Just saying I think he's cute, he's got a lil accent there, he could have a better hairstyle though but that's my only gripe. Everyone else seems to be a bit of a tough crowd unfortunately XD

Now I expect Sebastian to open his mouth and hiss with fangs while tossing a black and purple cape across his shoulders....hairstyle looks kind of count dracula-ish to me...

And I hadn't paid that much attention to his hair before....

lmao, yeah I always home in on the hair when I see a character(blame it on the estrogen I guess) he's got a little widows-peak and it's too short for my liking. I dunno guess I just have a thing for longer-haired guys. But either way it goes Sabby seems cute enough in the face and an interesting enough story for me not to care that much.

Actually, I've thought about the love interest issue and maybe it's not so unrealistic for Sebastian to be romanceable.  This is for one sole reason: he is the only human male party member revealed so far who isn't a direct blood relative to Hawke.

Thoughts?

They made him alongside the main game, on a different budget. I prefer pre-planned DLC, myself.

Think about it: if he wasn't planned with the game, NPCs would ignore him, his mission would never be referenced, he'd have no banters with the rest of the party, and so on. If they wanted that, BioWare would have to go to great expense to hire all those people back. Not to mention code the DLC on top of the game, instead of inside of it, fitting snugly.

I have a confession: I don't like the face morphs. They look cartoonish. They remind of the models from the Sims 3. They don't quite "blend" into the face. You have an obvious nose, an obvious face, and obvious eyes, and they look a bit pasted on. All the lines are quite sharp, almost carved and cut, and that seems to be a style choice, but it makes their faces look a tad cartoony.

Am I the only one who thinks so?

Sims 3 is EXACTLY what they remind me of and thats a terrible thing. Everything on the faces just looks so flat and plastic/rubber looking. They look like they're trying to emulate action figures and not actual people. The thing that always impressed me with Origins was how  the skin textures on the faces were very detailed and added some life to the characters. Not the case at all in what we've seen of DA2 so far.

And the hair looks bolted on Lego style.

Never mind the textures either:sick:

*sigh* Maybe I'm just getting in touch with my inner Graphics ****. But I thought DA2 was supposed to have improved graphics? I can cope with the new art style so long as the technical fidelity is there, but this does not look good at all. And the closer scrutiny of the cinematic ME style approach zooming and all only makes the poor graphics even more apparent.

A game isn't being release prematurely if the character is being released at the same time as the game is it?  He's just optional.

I think the face blends quite nicely, actually. The eyes look... well, socketed like they're supposed to, the nose doesn't seem excessively obvious (I have a nose, it's obvious that I do :P), and on a whole it doesn't strike me as pasted on at all. The only thing that is clearly distinguished from the rest is the mouth, but it works for me. Those lips are quite pretty, actually. :kissing:

The thing that DOES make him look somewhat cartoonish is that he has a perfect face. Look at anyone besides Morrigan from DA:O and they have like... lines and skin textures that aren't all perfectly smooth and all. Then again, I know people in real life who have like, the most perfect skin ever, so I'm not judging.

The eyes stand out a lot too, but that's mostly because they're really, really blue. Again, not something you wouldn't see in real life.

And you know what? That particular screenshot you posted actually makes him look better for me. It's just... the dark hair and the blue eyes and the full lips, they work for me. In a possibly slightly cartoonishly styled way, but they work. At least he doesn't have the creepy, apparently pasted on supremely contrast-y white-patch-with-iris eyes and lolwhiteners?teeth that Jacob had in ME2.

Some people prefer the art style to give more of an illusion of realism than to have it look drawn, cel-shaded, etc.

The tech is out there to make extremely realistic looking "people".   The characters need to blend in with the world though. Not everyone has kickass computers that can consistently chug out and maintain that level of rendering.  Now, I WISH I had it but I broke 2 ill-equipped computers going through some 3d modeling courses as it is :P  They need to keep it accessible to lots of people, and balance aesthetics with playability.

I think the characters blend in with the new world nicely from what I have seen so far.  Trust me, when they are THAT much better than the world, it looks really, really odd.   And they look good to me, better animation than before also, from what little we can see.

I don't think it's really a technical limitations thing, just a matter of style. Whether they want it to look more like it mimics real life or like it mimics a comic book/anime/whatever. There were PS1 games that went for realism in that sense. DAO, for that matter,  seems to be more in the realism direction than DA2's screenshots is showing.

That's not to say I necessarily dislike cartoony/cel-shaded/whatever you want to call it, but I do think this guy looks a little goofy.

Regarding the character/environment model disparity, well, people talk about that disparity in Mass Effect, but it never struck me as being really, really odd. Didn't really bother me. But I'm talking about the whole art style anyway, not just the character, though it may be exemplified by this character.

I thought what they did with DA and ME2 was a great idea and a very generous offer. It was meant to combat used game sales which I can understand; I don't understand why they just didn't stick with that model.

I don't know. However, I don't care either. As several people have noted, we already have two rogues so it's not like this character is 'necessary.' He's additional content.

This offer is about jumping through hoops, which I'm not inclined to do with a game that looks last gen, at least in the cutscenes. I mean, those graphics are just plain bad when compared to other modern games.

I thought the graphical quality for Dragon Age: Origins was fine. I rarely play games for the graphics. I disliked the art style and they've changed it.

If you don't want to jump through hoops then don't. For me, Dragon Age, and all BioWare games, are day one purchases. I usually don't pre-order, but am willing to do so for an extra character.

You're right about the voice acting though. Always solid in their games. The costumes, among other things, are too flamboyant; excess seems to be the visual theme. I'll shut up now.

I love the Cleric's robe. His neck scruff looks like it has cupcake frosting on it and I fear when I speak to him I'll always want to lick it off. I think the design itself is very nice, and I like the white and gold coloring. I have no idea how either of these is flamboyant.

Grahpics don't look much improved to me as well and considering as ME2 was pretty good visually I don't know why DA2 is shaping up to be like this, maybe they're not finished with the visuals yet and that's why they've been so reluctant to release videos.... anyway if that's what the game looks like on PC with DX10 or DX11 then I'm a little disappointed.

All this same game dlc is getting outrageous. If your gonna release the game.. make sure all the characters and locations  are in the full game. Dlc should only be released  as patches and new content after the game has been out for awhile.

There is no character to those faces, they look bland and un-formed.

At least this might be a rogue, if he is indeed a rogue, I can use in the game as Isabella-with-no-pants and chesthair varric aren't very appealing to me.

I probably won't buy DLC period, unless something really catches my eye (Like Leliana's Song).  You also aren't being charged for this particular bit of DLC if you preorder.  So...?

I wouldn't say the graphics look bad. They look clearer, more detailed, and more vivid. I'd say I see a vast improvement, especially in character movement and animation. But the faces look cartoon-y to me.

Because I severely lightened the picture in Levels, since it was cast in shadow in the shot.

EDIT: Speaking of which, the screenshot is not meant to been seen like that, and is throwing off textures and colors. Don't use it as a reference.

You should wait then,  I unfortunatly don't find myself having the luxury.  I'm far to excited,  so I preordered and got a bit of a kick back in return.  So,  I think that's pretty cool.  I'm not trying to force you,  but I'm just really confused about why you've got your underwear in a knot.

Because I like BioWare. So every time they do something new that reminds me of a scheisty car salesman (and the instances have been gradually mounting) it makes me sad/upset.

Fact: New game sales make money for EA and BioWare.
Fact: Used game sales do not make money for EA and BioWare.

Problem: How to encourage new game sales?
Solution: Offer content that is exclusive to new games.

Issue: Exclusive content is ... exclusive.
Resolution:
  • Offer exclusive content well in advance of release with plenty of warning and as much information as possible so that the consumers can make an informed decision.  [check]
  • Make sure exclusive content is not necessary content, but still appealing and interesting, so that the consumers can make an informed decision.  [check]
BioWare is offering more so that they get more.  What exactly is wrong with that?  Are you assuming the other option would be that they simply add it in for free and just sell that to everyone without making any other changes.  That is highly unlikely; what would probably happen is that they would add in extra content and raise the price another $30 or $40 dollars to cover the necessary costs.

Every pre-order is a (mostly) guaranteed sale.  That means EA/BioWare can start projecting sales numbers ahead of time, and that information is very valuable for many reasons that I won't go into because this isn't a business economics class.  Encouraging pre-orders is not the same thing as trying to sell undercoating.

Bottom line: What is your entertainment worth to you?  I wanted the soundtrack more than anything, so I happily pre-ordered ages ago.  Now I'm giddy to know that I get such a cool bonus character in the bargain.  Some people want to wait for the reviews.  It's not worth it to them to pre-order under any circumstances, because they need to more about the game.  Different people have different priorities.  In the end, really, it's still just a game.

Ha- I noticed that too.

I don't know if the shockingly ugly graphics are just part of the art style or what. But I'm just really, really taken aback at how that trailer looked. I guess I'd just say this: I'd rather they try to either go all out with a more realistic look or go all out with some super stylized cel shaded type look. Because where it stands now, from my POV it looks right in the middle where I can't discern whether certain things are supposed to look stylized or if they're still trying to have things look "real" and just not doing a good job of it.

I don't know if they look cartoonish, but I do agree all the structural lines of the face are sharp.  I don't know if that is intended or not.  The eyes, mouth, and nose look obvious because of probably how the facial animation software works.  It has to be able to recognize what the eyes are and where they are to do facial animations.

I mean "obvious" as in "they're pasted on". That's not how it looked in DAO or ME1/2.

I suppose so.  Maybe I just don't notice it as much or something, they all look like video game faces to me.

Heh. Well, my family(the royal and not royal sides) are all alive and well, so we don't share that similarity.

But I have had people try to kill me before, and I have felt the need to exact vengeance on those who did.

I can see where Sebastian comes from, so hence, my interest is piqued.

I don't know if we'll share any other similarities, but then again, to find out, I've got to get the game, right?
