The cartoonish impression may be due to lack of texture to the face -- in Sebastian's case at least it's very smooth and yeah, quite similar to that Sims character. Combine that with lack of specular highlights which you'd see on normal human face and the result can be rather artificial.

Right- DA2 doesn't look stylized enough for me to automatically think of the graphics as stylized (like Prince of Persia) and yet its not realistic enough to have me think of it as trying to be realistic like Origins tried to be. As it stands, its firmly in some bizarre No Man's Land where I can't tell what aspects are looking as intended or whats hopefully just unfinished.

It just looks shockingly ugly to me as of now, especially considering how Zeschuk said DA2 would look "super hot" and how they've been hyping up how improved the graphics would look.

For little it's worth, DAO face for comparison:

granted, Loghain is older so all wrinkles and such are more pronounced, but even younger characters like Alistair had similarly detailed faces. DA2 seems to be doing away with that.

You know, I do think that's what it is. I think some of it does have to do with the sharpness if their faces, but it mostly has to do with the incredibly clean, cel-like textures. I guess they want the faces to "pop" more, and be less muddy than DAO, but it makes their faces look unreal to me.

wrote this in another topic but it seems relevant enough:

"that is...IF the sebastian video is representative of the latest build, which i really doubt it is, my guess is that they record these videos quite a bit ahead of time before releasing them."

Some of you people are impossible. You sit on here and ***** and moan about not knowing enough about the game, and when they release teasers and things, you complain about the graphics, lack of LI ability, story, and character comparisons. No wonder some of the devs are so frustrated on here. If people spent so much time crapping on things it took me years to complete based on a damn 30 second teaser, I would be frustrated too.

and you are *****ing about *****ing so what it really amounts to is everyone likes to hear themselves talk - even in an online forum (especially in an online forum).

most people are actually HAPPY about this DLC and want MORE. they want to know more and try to share their excitement, leading people to pump up other people with their energy, though that energy does often have a tendancy to get misdirected.

sure there are a handful of negative comments but why do those always outweight all the positive ones, especially given that there are boat loads more of of posts about people who are more excited about the game or even those who pre-ordered it just because of the announced character?

Welcome to the internetz?

Then why are you guys always complaining about the devs if you already know the rules of the internet? That makes no sense.

Also, I'm all for defending BioWare and the devs (because I think they deserve it), but I wouldn't say they spent years on DAII.

They started in 2009 did they not? And as far as we know, it is not a finished product yet.

Dhiro wrote...

Saibh was really polite when she talked about the graphics.
Sebastian is very handsome and it's natural that people want to romance
him - in fact, the devs and the "try to flirt with him" are a perfect
bait for fangirls (and boys). What I'm trying to say is: nobody must
like everything. And it doesn't matter if  you waste all your life doing
something, for some people it'll never be good enough.

Errr, I wasn't referring to Saibh at all, or anyone in particular, so there's no need to defend one person. But some people are particularly nasty in their replies, and those are the same ones getting butthurt over the devs not treating them the way they want. Respect is a two way street. If all you do is spend time complaining about their work, you better believe they're not going to be so willing to give in to your demands.

I think Sebastians trailer gave me very good idea of how the game looks in the end, I like the more intense graphics and color scheme of his armor. I admit textures in his armor look kinda bad in faceshot but I can see his skin pores just fine thank you....

Comparing BioWare's 'artistry' to Eidos M isn't quite fair. Assassins' Creed 2 and Pop 08 were both the best looking games I'd played the year they came out. They're also doing Deus Ex: HR and the new Lara Croft, which both look great.

I guess you meant Ubisoft M in regards to AC and POP.

I wasn't really comparing 'artistry' as much as I was talking about how far were they willing to go in this "stylized"/"artistic" approach to DA2 graphics, when POP 08 was first announced and the devs said they were working with Cell Shaded hybrid grahpics the Ubisoft forums went on a roar and I was like "wait and see" and the game was quite stunning in terms of visuals because the devs went all the way with the artistic style, I for one never commented on DA2's graphics till now because we never had a very close up shot with that kind of lighting before but if it does look like this now it won't change much over the next 2 months.... DA2 is on the fence, the grahpics neither look stylized nor realistic but somewhere in between which doesn't do the game any good in regards of establishing a recognizeable artstyle.

Forums are made for feedback and discusion about games, some feedback is positive and some is negative, if you're willing to accept the positive feedback with a pat on the back and a smile then you should be able to accept the negative feedback as well.

It has a year development cycle--it started post-DAO release, or perhaps just before.

if we are to believe the devs words, they said in the developer diary video that development on DA2 started well before DA:origins release.

So anyway, I do find this character very interesting. I'm always down for new archers! And his quest sounds like it'll be icing on the cake.

Yeah, that's why I said "sure a handful of people" - if your reading comprehension was up to snuff you could have understood I was agreeing with that point. I know you've got this weird fetish about wanting to butt hurt people over the internet, but really, you are failing, hardcore.

Not that anyone could really feel anything anyway, when the effort made is so small. ^_^

The point I was trying to make that apparently flew over your head was, despite the fact that there are a handful of whiners, most people are recieving this DLC well and like it. No need to bring more negativity into this thread (which is what you were upset about anyway). Clearly, whatever you were trying to say got miscontrued anyway given the amount of quotes that one post got, unless you were intentionally rabble rousing.

@nightcobra8928: according to the developer diary they were just brainstorming at the time, no actual concrete work was done yet, any planned sequel (game or no) has to see how the original does in order to decide where to go next.

@kalassy: I don't want them to change their minds... I never said that and they'll never change their minds, I like a lot of the changes they did to combat and story telling but not to graphics, it's as simple as I like x, y but don't like z... is that hard to understand?

Also who's crapping on their product? don't come reading the last two pages and assume things about people, I always follow the principle of "Don't agree with anything just for the sake of being ageeable", people like you of "Bioware Defense Squad" seem to be doing just that.

Well, there was a big gap between DAO being feature locked in Spring 2009 and the release of the game in Autumn. They wouldn't have needed all their staff to work on porting it to the consoles, so presumably they began working on DA2 then rather than doing nothing for several months. There was obviously Awakening too, but that was only worked on by a small subset of the DAO team.

Hmm. Sebastian uses a bow. Varric uses a crossbow. I wonder if they are the same weapon? Or maybe Varric have a strenght-based build and Sebastian a dex-based build?

how a brainstorming goes can go quite a long way in making sure that you either be a long time defining what you want to do for the next installment or having it clear since the beginning of development which can greatly influence the overall time of development.

I think it was mentioned in the PAX interviews- although maybe he meant that they started work when Origins was actually finished in March 09. In any event, I think for much of that time they might have been working on stuff for DA2 but it was mostly preproduction type stuff and probably alot of the art and writing.

All rogues are primarily DEX-based from what Peter Thomas said in his Q&A.

good question but i think (i'm not sure) that one of the devs (i think it was peter thomas) that skill trees were assigned to different roles rather than different types of weapons.

ex:

in origins you had the 2h tree and s/s tree

in DA2 you would have an offensive tree and a defensive tree in which the skill can be used by every weapon that character has.

My reading comprehension skills are just fine, love, however maybe you should go back through your grammar notes and reread the pages on "insinuation," which is what you did when you implied that I was *****ing about *****ing because ~everyone likes to hear themselves talk~. Erm, no, I was commenting on a topic that has been coming up a lot recently, which is the dev vs. consumer relationship on the forum, and I decided to give an example of my point while the example was in full effect. If I wanted to listen to myself talk (read: type) I would just post things like "THIS WATERMELON LOOKS DELICIOUS!!!!! CALIFORNIA, WEST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES!!!!! SALLY SELLS SEASHELLS BY THE SEASHORES!!!!!" and completely ignore the rabble that was going on around me.

I'm well aware that there are many people commenting about how they love the DLC, and kudos to them. However, I'm guessing that those same people aren't the ones complaining about the devs. Therefore, my comment had nothing (read: 0) to do with them. So if you're apparently so edumacated, why would you quote my comment and then start on a completely different topic? Did you not understand what I was talking about? If only there were types of speech that allowed us to question the intent of other people's statements.....

*poof!* and now we're back on topic:wizard:

I'm curious to see how Sebastian interacts with other characters around him though. I'm really interested in the party banter. He looks like a no-nonsense type of guy.
