It also sounds (from the interviews I've seen) that you get all of your companions very early on (year 1 perhaps?) and you grow on your relationships from there. It would be weird to be in year 5 or 7 and come across this guy. It would be hard for me to form a good relationship with him when I already had so much invested with my other characters.
