Why the Quarian Mystery is Dumb

Obviously this is dictacted by the plot to give them an air of mystery and to drive Talimancers up the wall, but it just strikes me as Dumb with a capital D that there are literally no known depictions of what they actually look like and absolutely no one has any idea what their appearence really is.
Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I was sitting in traffic earlier and it just hit me.

Clarification: I am not a Talimancer and the "quarian reveal" is not something that will make or break ME3 for me. I just think it is dumb that no one can remember what they look like, considering it hasn't really been that long as far as the galaxy is concerned.

It's also 300 years of almost total seclusion. The only time anybody else would ever see a quarian post-Morning War is in an environmental suit. That's 300 years of associating quarians with their clothing/armor. Even for an asari who has lived close to 1000 years, that's over a third of your lifespan having to perceive something in a different way. Even barring senility, no asari or krogan is going to have even close to perfect memory of something that happened centuries ago.

300 years is a long time no matter how you slice it, that's true, but even a middle-aged Asari (five or six hundred years) should be able to recall it, more or less. I mean, Samara was chasing Morinth for 400 years, right? I bet she can remember why. But the long-lived races forgetting after a long time is only one thing, surely there was photographic evidence at some point? Surely someone on the Citadel was keeping the in-world equivalent of a codex on all known species? Especially since they've been stuck in their suits for the past 300 years, you'd think someone would have made sure to keep pre-Morning War records of thema round.
Of course, it is the way it is because that is the way Bioware wants it. It just suddenly struck me how arbitrary it was.

They are in porn mags on the internet... Some quarians dont even wear suits after getting a genetic upgrade. Everybody knows what they look like. They dont know what each specifically looks like, but they know what their race looks like. They are apparently very attractive for people to want to see what their faces look like, or maybe just got disalussioned by all the porn of quarians models.outlaworacle wrote...
That was one thing I was never sure of, though, whether people in-universe do know what they look like. I seem to remember the Quarian on Illium (with the Turian "friend", poor guy) saying something to the effect of "people just want to date me because they're all like, ooooh, I wonder what she looks like under that mask".

Aha! That's news to me. Should have spent longer perusing that copy of Fornax.
So, it seems that in-universe, people are aware of what they look like, which sort of takes the wind out of this post. I will downgrade the dumb to a lowercase d and stand corrected.

AI's were outlawed because of the Quarian/Geth situation, not before that. Regardless, the Humans were still nuking their own planet during that era.
Humans had nuclear weapons in 1885?

I get why they want to tease the tali reveal, but damn did they make the lore stupid.

edit: It's silly they go to such lengths to hide their faces. But this always happens with characters like that.

The only reason not to show what Quarians look like in the past 2 games is to make the Tali face reveal in ME3 that much more epic.
tali's face is the secret weapon against the reapers. when she takes off her mask in front of a reaper, it screams and explodes.

No it wasn't. In ME1 Tali mentioned that they were skirting the AI research laws in creating and upgrading the Geth but weren't directly breaking said law. Which means that the law against AI research already exsisted before The Morning War.

However, many, many games, movies, and other media have characters that never showed their face or only showed them as a crescendo. V for Vendetta's V, South Park's Kenny, Judge Dredd, and Halo all utilized the "Faceless Character" trope with some of those never even showing the person's face. It can help make a character more interesting or be used as symbolism. Judge Dredd symbolizes that Justice is a non-personal entity and isn't V that much more awesome with the mystery involved?
My guess is that the lack of Quarian reveal is meant to symbolize something that they are missing. The obvious choice is a home world but maybe you could even think of their need for Pilgrimages as a factor. Quarians are likely based on the Romani and one of the stereotypes of those people is the "Gypsy Scarf" or "Gypsy Veil", so maybe it is solely meant as additional characterization. Maybe it is meant to show off that the Quarian are even more displaced than one would think, as they are now "trapped" inside suits. Bioware is excellent at putting deeper meaning in their games and I doubt they would have such an integral part of a character and race without good reason.
Best of luck y'all.
