Would you like a more military presence on the Normandy for ME3?

Title says it all.

I thought it was really nice how in ME1 you had guards at certain places on the ship that saluted you when you pass by and was hoping to see more of that in ME2 even though it was a Cerberus ship.

But unfortunately the only military presence on the SR2 is when you first find the "unique piece of salvage" that gets stored in the AI core. (no spoilers there right?)

Then you get that guard in the AI core that Shepard even tells to "be ready" cuz he's reactivating the "salvage" but the guard doesn't even have a pistol on him. What's he supposed to do? Shake his fist angrily at the "salvage" if it attacks Shep???

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would like for there to be at least one or two guards here and there on our ship in ME3 that are actually armed and wearing armor ready for combat.

I think it would add a nice touch to the atmosphere of the ship as well as make it more believable when the ship is not in combat action as well as if something happens like in ME2 where there was need for actual armed guards on the ship.

(and yeah, the crew arms themselves but they're all just wearing their casual wear)

No. I really would not like this.

I am tired of hearing supposed ex military types on the forums lecturing me on proper military protocol and who does or does not qualify as a proper XO and what is and isn't military doctrine and proper chain of command and blah blah blah.

This would just feed the problem that is Them.

You are at war, I'd like the feeling you see in action/war movie - people going around, maps and plan being designed and lots of soldiers and weapons with ammo crates all around the lower decks - In ME3 you are fighting an actual war so there MUST be a war situation feeling.

it would be neat to see alliance military guards on the normandy if you "disobey" TIM (no spoilers!) and return to the alliance.

Well, the Normandy in ME2 was filled with a bunch of criminals and assassins....so I didn't really expect anyone from Cerberus to salute me.

Jacob did though at times and it makes sense seeing how he served in the Alliance so he always had respect for Shepard.

I'm not sure if this counts as "more military presence" but I'd like the Normandy to have a gritter look and feel to it in ME3. The SR-1 and SR-2 were a little too clean and shiny for me but I can let it go, since they were both brand new ships when Shepard got them. In ME3 though, if Shepard keeps the SR-2, the second Normandy will have seen quite a bit of action and I'd expect it to have a more "lived-in" look.

Yeah this is definitely what I was talking about. Although I made the example of having some armed/armored guards saluting you, this explains well what I was going for. A more "at war" feeling, instead of everywhere on the ship feeling almost like a cruise ship.

I'd like this, as long as they do more. The only thing they actually did in Mass Effect 1 was carry the bomb down the Normandy's ramp.

It's military bearing, not presence. And yes, however keep in mind the SR2 is considered a "civilian ship" unlike the original. So much so that the only people that salute are Joker, Jacob, Miranda (once), and Ken & Gabby if you're a dick. Oddly enough the first three are officers and they don't need to.

The day military people stop complaining about video games will be the day they stop making video games featuring military people.

But didn’t the guard on the “salvage” have an Avenger rifle on his back? I thought he did. Coulda sworn.  I guess, even if he did, I wouldn't exactly call that "ready".

I usually like what Nightwriter has to say. But this time... No. Supposed? If they were they were and if they weren't, well jokes on them for pretending. Regardless I don't think you should judge if you haven't been through 8-13 wks of BMT much less everything else that follows. Military bearing is a big effin' deal and if you've served you'd know.

let's please not turn this into a "I know more than you about real military life" thing.

I think we can all agree that at the end of the day it's a video game, and that if we actually got some "pretend" military presence on the ship it would be fine.

Like others have said, even the lone guard supposedly protecting Shep from the "salvage" doesn't even have a gun on him.

If we actually had armed dedicated security officers like the first Normandy(I know the crew grab guns but it's not the same)maybe the Collectors would never have boarded the ship.

Not really interested in having everyone salute me just for sake of feeding my ego. If the guards serve a purpose, then they should be there. If they're just decoration, I want them off my ship. I have work to do.

Absolutely agree with the OP. Those touches of having the guards salute when you're going through the doors to the bridge, and the voice over when you're coming back onboard saying "Commanding Officer aboard, XO Pressely stands relieved" etc were great for immersion. They made it feel like you were actually important, that the people around you actually cared that you were there.

This.

You're not part of the military anymore, you're essentially freelance at this point for lack of a better term.

Yeah ok, you may be technically freelance, but the fact still remains that it doesn't matter if no one salutes you, but at least have some armed people on the ship, or some people with armor.

Like I and others said, it gets even really ridiculous when the "guard" that's supposedly there "ready" to protect you against the "salvage" in the AI core doesn't even have a pistol on him, much less an actual gun.

I'm not trying to debate whether our ship is military or not, but since it IS a ship designed for a military purpose, it doesn't make sense to me that there isn't a single armed person on it unless it comes under attack.

Why risk the salvage overpowering the guard and having handy access to a firearm before it even leaves the room? There's a reason prison guards don't carry weapons in the lockdown areas, you know. The guard probably shouldn't be in there at all, but definitely not in there with an assault rifle. And I can't think of a worse place to store  salvage, but that's another thread in itself.

I don't mind if they up the security presence, it had a neat feel to it in ME 1, but it's also fine the way it is. One thing I think isn't being considered here though, is it wouldn't really fit for the SR 2 to have an abundance of military people on it, and I'm not talking about the ship being technically civilian and Cerberus, which are both true.

It's not a combat vessel, not in a traditional sense anyway, it's a recon/special opps stealth ship. There is no traditional ground crew outside of your squadmates, thier the firepower. Upgraded, it can hold it's own, but it's not a cruiser or a troop carrier, not meant for frontline engagements or ship to ship combat. The entire crew are service, station operators, intelligence and officers, the closest thing to real soldier types the ship is meant to carry, are glorified security guards.

They snapped to it best they could when you know who came a knockin, but you also saw how pathetic thier resistance was, because they aren't combat trained crew. I think the way the SR 2 appeared and how they handled it was very proper, within the context of the game universe. I'm not commenting on any real military or anything, not getting into that.

This. It doesnt make sense for the only protection the ship has is non combat personelle and Shepard squad, esp in ME3 when you will start talking with the Alliance and Council again.

Agreed 100%

That one example which should not be cited because this is a no spoilers forum is a bad example anyways, because it's one of the glaringly weak moments of writing when Shepard decides to do you-know-what with his entire ground crew and it's one of the most inherently risky, nonsense ideas in the whole game. The only reason that happened was so the you-know-what-happens could happen in the first place without screwing up the rest of the game. It's just bad, bad bad bad. Bad idea, bad writing, bad implementation. BAD.

I reakon droids stood around the place would of given it a cool feel, without it feeling 'Aliance' as what we saw of a cerberus base in ME2 they seem to like Droids. I dont think Cerb have the manpower to have basic security, their too busy being secret agents and stuff

Your right, wall mounted turrets and VI drones would make sufficient security on a ship like the normandy (one that wasn't designed for front line combat.) as it saves resources and after you have 12 sqaudmates it becomes rather pointless to bother with actual security officers.

Plus having turrets and automated defenses and inside shields or barriers and drones would make sense as it would give EDI "weapons" to go along with her "being the ship".

It also makes sense as a normal progression because of what happens in ME2. You know what I mean, when there's a reason to fight in the ship.

That's what happens in real life a lot of times too isn't it? Ship designers incorporate changes or upgrades because they adapt to newer situations.

Lastly, it really seems like something obvious to me considering the game universe anyway.

Maybe I should have made the title of this thread "Combat Defense drones and droids in the Normandy"
