yup. If they made him extremely useful in combat that may help.

Fixing Jacob...

Easy, give him a tech power, a better biotic power then his special loyalty one, another weapon (maybe an assault rifle, everyone on the squad should have a sidearm anyway, IMHO) and maybe a rocket launcher.

Personality-wise he's fine, IMHO.

But again. Why was Ashley so helpful? She was cannon fodder. Taking her anywhere means one less biotic.

There are several squadmates I have left behind on every mission in every playthrough I've done, except for their loyalty missions and the suicide mission. Like Tali and Kasumi, neither of which can stand up to gunfights or can get isolated without Medigel coming into play.

And then there are the squadmates who are basically nothing special because everything they do can be done by someone else with more versatility, such as Grunt. I can take two other people and get Concussion Shot but if I take them I also get either Overload or Incendiary Grenade and Disruptor Ammo. His Fortification does nothing for me.

If I'm a Vanguard, what do I need Jack for? I already have Shockwave and her ammo power is not critical when I already have two ammo powers of my own.

But as an Infiltrator who doesn't even get offered Pull as an extra power, I could really use the wide-angle version of it vs. husks and any others that I need to incapacitate en masse. Without it, I have to shoot everybody individually. So Jacob has suddenly become very helpful, as has Samara and Thane, since they both have Throw.

He actually is already useful. He's one of the few that comes with both Area Pull and a Squad Ammo power (Jack can't max both without sacrificing her passive) and the Barrier glitch can be taken care of simply by completing LoTSB.

I am curious why we are talking about combat.

A good character is loved even if they are useless in combat. I would say combat effectiveness is hardly what Jacob's problem is.

I post in the "Gameplay" forum a lot so it's a habit for me to argue points like these I find incorrect.

The only thing to "fix" about Jacob is to make him less introvert in the third game aka the "Garrus Effect." Garrus was really stiff in the first game, but became more fleshed out and likable in the second. Just repeat that with Jacob and give him a freakin Assault Rifle.

Because his purported combat uselessness is being used to support an argument that he adds nothing to the game, among other reasons.

I thought Jacob was pretty cool.  Overall he just needs more dialogue and more powers.  To be honest I think everyone needs more powers.  The two-three powers and one of them being an ammo wasn't really enough when you consider how many abilities your teammates had in ME1.

there have been too many posts since the last time this was mentioned, so, in honor of the board rules with regards to Jacob-related threads, here goes:

Jacob is really useful in the early stages of the game when your Shepard doesn't have any ammo powers. Him and Miranda is probably one of the most effective teams you can bring along with you.

Good point made , the biggest reason Jacob to me is like able because he's not a stereotype of someone who's black. He's not as said above a Barry White , a Cole Train from Gears of War or constantly talking in slang.

I'm glad you brought that up. I bet IF Jacob was for of an African American male stereotype like Griggs from Modern Warfare or Cole Train from Gears of War, I bet Jacob would probably have been the most like/favorite male character of ME2. Instead, he was not that African-American stereotype so I suggest this sort of "threw gamers off" and really did not know how to take Jacob considering that he isn't a stereotype but his own invididual. A lot of gamers probably couldn't grasp that so thus they label him as boring....

Agreed, in all my ME playthroughs I had different stats for everyone.... but in ME2... with my limited options.... I'm forced to give everyone the same thing everytime.... my only choice... determaning which "branch" power.

A fair point. Hell, the only reason I LIKE Cole Train is when he just rushes in while I'm shooting stuff shouting "Cole Train, baby!" as obnoxiously as possible.

Jacob doesn't have a "hankerin'" for fried chicken or watermelon, and never asks "where da white women at," so people write him off as boring.

I say keep him the way he is. What I liked best about the guy is that he's straight up with you from the start, and in a shady organization like Cerberus, Jacob is perhaps a lot more trustworthy than Miranda is.

Even if you play as a female, Jacob shows no romantic interest in you until you bring it up with him and express interest. Otherwise, he's more than willing to be your buddy once you gain his loyalty.

I usually chalk up his romance (with questionable dialogue according to most people) to him being unfamiliar with the territory and him just trying his best. He lets my FemShep vent her frustrations at one point, and you can do the same and get him to say what's bugging him. That said, both Shepard and Jacob both have to deal with a lot of crap from Cerberus, the Alliance, and even close friends. Mostly though, he deals with his problems privately and remains professional at all times.

I can see him easily being one of the go-to guys in ME3. He was more than willing to put himself on the line against the Collectors and probably will do so again once the Reapers arrive.

Lol, Jacob is just another Carth/Kaiden. In the Bioware RPGs I've played the first partners are usually a bossy female, and a generic male.

Change the voice acting notes for femShep to read "Act like a normal person" when she is talking to Jacob.

As far as his stats go, Jacob is OK. He is very good in the early game with pull and if you don't have an ammo power yourself, squad incendiary is also very good. Once you have completed his loyalty mission though he becomes pretty bad because he keeps turning on barrier making pull unavailable.

In terms of developing his character more from a storyline perspective adding more banter in would help. Jacob seems to have a pretty good set of morals and be a straightup kind of guy but that sort of character can come off as pretty boring unless he is interacting with the more dubious characters.

I know, and I know that there are people here (possibly in this thread) that finds Jacob boring for the simple reason that he doesn't live up to their expectations of what a black male should be.

Hell, I remember before ME2 came out people were hoping that Jacob have a Samuel L. Jackson type personality in that he yells out and crap like that. Turns out, Jacob was calm and collected.

Welcome to 2011

Take him out of the skin tight spandex and give him a proper Uniform, Armour for away missions.

Shrink his jaw a bit and cut back on the razor bumps around the neck.

Figure out what type of personality he is supposed to have and stick to it. In ME2 Jacob goes back and forth between casual banter and the rigid military dicipline of a soldier to quickly and too often for my tastes. He was also supposed to be the nice guy on the ship full of mercs, killers and people who you just could not trust in general and yet more often than not it was Jacobs casual comments about stuff that rubbed me the wrong way, he came off as very judgemental as well as very emotionally closed off. I also got the impression that he was getting annoyed with me for trying to talk to him when he did not having anything new to say. Don't use stupid pieces of dialouge like "The Prize", Bioware were proabably trying too hard to make him sond cool but instead he came of as a moron.

Bioware doesn't need to fix Jacob. There is nothing wrong with him. If gamers cannot get behind the fact that Jacob is Jacob and will not be who "they want him to be" then that isn' Bioware's fault.

I like this comment the best. all in all in my opinion he was deeper and cooler then Kaiden so I'm fine with Jake.

The solution to any problem is to turn said problem into a cyborg.

It's not that he's "broken", but fades is comparison to most if not all squadmates, in terms of personality and character development. He's just kinda bland in that way.

Take Liara for example, a lot was done with her and she's a much better character now. I think that's what the players are talking about when they say Jacob needs "fixing"...
