I have Mass Effect 1 via Steam download.
My specs are here:
http://valid.canardp....php?id=1581075
and here:

My issues are twofold. First, I experience popping sound in game. It is worse at the first playable section of the game, but less after running a few feet down the hall. It then becomes worse as I approach the dialogue with the ship's captain. It then persists throughout the dialogue/cutscene. The game is practically unplayable because of the sound popping, which is significantly louder than the other sound effects.
Second, during the cutscene prior to the first mission on Eden Prime, the game crashes. It has crashed at that point 3 times. I've not tried again.
Thank you for your help.

I have switched between hardware and software sound, to no avail. I have adjusted my sound card's format to the lowest: 16 bit, 44100 Hz, to no avail.

I have the Steam Version too but I'm not having sound issues. I'm using the on-board audio of my motherboard and I just select hardware since I have no idea what software does or what soundcard is considered audio software.
You didn't say if you're using the built in motherboard sound card or a seperate sound card and it doesn't say in your specs. if you're using the Via VT1708S built in sound of your motherboard I would suggest going here http://www.via.com.t...ort/drivers.jsp and updating your drivers.
If your using a seperate audio card go to their website and update those drivers as well.
You can also get the 1.02 Patch and use it on the steam version. I did and it worked.

Read it, then post the specs in here. Not going to start visiting websites because you cant be bothered doing what you should.

I apologize for not including the sound card info. I thought it might be included in the two utilities outputs as they were specified as a way to post specs on the "how to" post. But I did not check to see.
I am using the onboard Via VT1708S. I had updated to the latest driver on the VIA website already, to no avail.
I assumed all patches would be included with the steam download as they say they keep their games up to date. But I'll assume not and load the patch and test it this evening. Thanks for the help, WWNSX.

I installed the patch and it solved the crashing problem - thanks! The popping sound issue is still present, but less severe. It is still aggravating because the pops are so loud. Any other advice?

I'm surprised to hear 1.02 worked on the Steam version. As far as I know, it was never designed to, and would probably put a disc check in place.
However, for your second problem, DunsScotus, I'd recommend trying Steam's "verify game cache" function. Right-click on ME in Steam and select Properties, there'll be a button under one of the tabs there.

Last night, prior to installing 1.02, I ran the "game cache check" and it came back clean. Just to be sure, I deleted the local content, then downloaded the game again. I then installed the 1.02 patch onto the steam version (with no hiccups that I saw). This fixed the crash, but the sound popping is still present.
I just checked the game cache again for the new install. It had 1 file missing. I don't know if this was because of the patch or not. It loaded the file. I then loaded the game and found the popping sound still present. I have tried software and hardware audio.
