I remember when I heard that Mass Effect 2 was using the same Graphic's enging as Mass Effect 1 I was a little disappointed.
However, upon actually playing Mass Effect 2 I was blown away.  I couldn't believe how much better the game looked despite using the same graphic's engine and it goes to show what a little tweaking can do.

That being said, can anyone confirm any visual improvements in Dragon Age 2 subtle or otherwise?

I personally think the game looks better. Granted, we haven't seen a whole lot.

The answer to this would be a resounding no if I were to go by what they've released. The graphics look considerably worse, even if the art design is improved. Up till now I've assumed all I've seen are old builds, and that graphics will improve closer to release date. With just 2 months to go and resolution looking last gen, it doesn't look like it will happen.

I didn't notice ME2 looking much better than ME1 (the environment textures were better).

With regard to DA2, so far (based on screenshots and gameplay footage) I think it looks like a step down from DAO graphically. The environments appear less detaled.

from what I have seen so far?

better morphs, better animation - different texture. Different meaning not like DA:O. Whether it is a step up, or a short-cut (aka worse) is your call.

I think the models and animation are much better. Some characters and cut-scenes: much better, Overall, world seems more flat.

Now, I havent seen it for more than a minute at a time though, and most of what we think *Is* preference too....keep that in mind. I still think it looks fantastic in general.

ME2 had significantly better lighting than ME1, that really changed the game. Many other improvements, better range of animations, textures and so on. Bioware's best game graphically, and the best looking action-rpg. DA2 so far looks like a step back from DA:O, which was already outdated. Theres really no major visual improvement we've seen yet, and it seems they're trying to mask it with a more cartoony art style, which isn't getting anyone excited. The animations and character movements seem better, but that's it..

Personally, I'd be happy with worse graphics that are more polished/colorful/interesting and smoother animations. Origins was so very brown and gray for the most part and everything was so stiff.

ME1 used Unreal 3.0.

ME2 used Unreal 3.5.

A little bit of an upgrade which would explain why ME2 looked better than its predecessor.

I would assume DA2 will be a graphical improvement over DA:O.  Tends to be the trend in game development and what little I've seen of DA2 has been improved over Origins (not that it was that difficult...if we're honest, Origins wasn't exactly a beautiful looking game).

Yeah, my mistake.  I meant to say Dragon Age:Origins.  Thanks for pointing that out, I'll edit it.

Same. Even if the graphics turn out to be worse than origins, an updated color palette would go a long way in making the game look more interesting. Hell, I'd take 8-bit sprites at this point so long as they had a more diverse color palette.

Faces were much improved, and the overall aesthetic of the various worlds was a lot better.

That's on purpose, as a contrast to the character models, which will likely be much more high texture.

I think it's hard to tell at this point. However, the direction of the art style is definitely discernible and up to interpretation. I personally do not like the new direction as much as it looks more 'cartoony,' but that is just subjective.

I've been hearing a lot of talk about the game looking more cartoony and I'm just not getting that same impression. The game looks distinctively darker and grittier than the first game. It's a very non-romanticized low fantasy like look. It reminds me of Aquilonia

I guess we have differing opinions, fair enough.

True, but the main difference here is that my opinion is right while yours is wrong.

I would hope you are joking but if not I have this quote for you...

"Stiff in opinion, always in the wrong."

But I'm 99% sure you were joking, I was just thrown off by a lack of :D

The Sebastian trailer pushed me from a general dislike of the new style to OMG, I'm actually going to have difficulty playing the game because I find it so offputting. Hopefully, prolonged contact will numb me to it, because the acting seems to be the same high caliber that we're used to, and I'm really looking forward to the story.

Yes DA2 will look amazingly awesome. They will have photo-real boobies!

Nah just kidding. The boobies won't be photo-real. In fact I think there won't be boobies at all! Probably see the appearance of magical medieval fantasy bra again... DAMN YOU MAGICAL BRA!!!

DA2 will look pretty much the same as Awakening, and thus pretty much the same as Origins. That's fine with me. I loved DAO for the story (and the boobies).

Shouldnt that supercomputer make it all good Borschejack? If that fails try benchpressing it and hitting it with your uber sword of not awesomeness.

My computer's ability to run this game was never in doubt.  My computer can also run World of Warcraft very well but that game still looks like garbage so the technical prowess of my computer is hardly relevant, as is my physical prowess or skill with the blade.

The DA2 surrounding environments look less gritty yet still detailed but the characters themselves (those revealed) have a Sims 3 style pudding face complex which is disappointing. They look so puffy, less realistic and with no distinguishing features.

For instance, Sebastian's facial skin in the teaser video was so smooth it looked flat and cartoonish, whereas in DA:O you could see wrinkles, frown lines, facial discolourations and even pores on many npcs and companions.

Still, I pre-ordered a while ago and look forward to the new adventure :)

They set the bar high for the graphics and textures in DA:O but graphically speaking, the characters, in particular, don't look so appealing to me in DA2.

Yes, yes they will be.
