Will the graphics be a step up from Dragon Age:Origins?

a : characteristic of or belonging to reality as perceived rather than as independent of mind
More people should be familiar with this word.

The DA2 surrounding environments look less gritty yet still detailed but the characters themselves (those revealed) have a Sims 3 style pudding face complex which is disappointing. They look so puffy, less realistic and with no distinguishing features.
For instance, Sebastian's facial skin in the teaser video was so smooth it looked flat and cartoonish, whereas in DA:O you could see wrinkles, frown lines, facial discolourations and even pores on many npcs and companions.
Like the wrinkles shown on Flemeth's face in the screenshot below?

Edit: I've just downloaded the HD version of the teaser video and watched it again. The characters' faces still have a good amount of details, just like in Origins. I can clearly make out the wrinkles, pores and difference in skin complexion between Sebastian's face and Grand Cleric Elthina's. Not to mention that the characters' teeth are a step up from the first game's.

I guess some of us detail fiends have to wait until we get our hands on the game to get a true impression of whether DA2 is a step-up graphically from DA:O.
In this screenie, Flemeth looks like she's been visiting the same Botox clinic as Nicole Kidman - her forehead is as smooth as a baby's bottom

And really the whole game has a really jrpg design style feel to it. Which while fine for JRPGs for a BW game just feels...off.

They said they had gone for a more stylized look and also a bit more colourful. They seem to have hit the right tone for it. And I don't think a dark RPGs has to look like someone dropped a bucket of brown paint over it. Why can't it be colourful? I mean a lot of dark things happen in real life and the real world doesn't look brown.Ryzaki wrote...
Did the devs ever say they wanted it to look cartoony?

There's a line between colorful and anime. They crossed the line into anime styled in my opinion.
Edit: Though while I feel the graphics got worse the animations are very much improved.

On that note, I do find the graphics underwhelming. The animation in that scene was great, but those textures were hideously bad. Sadly, I agree they look worse than Origins. For the most part I like what I have seen of DA2's art direction, but those textures need a swift kick in the pants.

Yeah, the textures could use a little upgrading though I'll admit I like the "plain" effect they seem to have for being so low res. It looks slightly... I don't know how to explain it but some scenes have a neat "2D" effect to them.Seagloom wrote...
I despised how drab areas looked in Origins. It was so prevalent that even the Brecilian Forest and Denerim felt drab despite both locations being bathed in sunlight. I know Thedas is a bit darker than the typical fantasy world, but that does not mean it should have all color and personality drained from it. Beauty and life can flourish even there. The enviroments in Sebastian's trailer reminded me of JE and KotOR. Not that it was as colorful as the former, nor do I think it should be, but I liked how alive that location looked. The area looked filthy, while still having color. That is what I wanted Denerim to be.

Playing with the contrast could be an option to focus more on the character, but that isn`t enough IMO.

i love good use of color in games, most recent example of what i like to see would be enslaved with it's uses of red, blue, green, grey, yellow, etc... like this:
Everyone loves colour, but keeping a colour scheme within the theme/period of the game genre is something else altogether.
I thought DA:O was one of the most visually breathtaking games ever made. The graphics, textures and colours were so faithful to the story being told. I am glad it did not cater to people who might be bored easily with the gritty medieval colour schemes and textures used in it.
But this is all aside from the original point of this thread. :huh:Colour use is one thing, graphic quality another.
