I play it on an Intel chip just fine. No lag, no problems. My chip is just called 'Intel HD Graphics' under dxdiag.

I'm curious, what's your resolutions and framerate? Is the Presidium playable?

Keeping in mind that I'm an idiot, please tell me how to find that information out and I'll be happy to provide it.  Image IPB

There's a program called Fraps you can download for free (Google it). It will display the amount of frames per second on screen. usually 30 or higher is acceptable.

I used to play Mass Effect 1 on unsupported hardware and got 22 frames per second (which is headache inducing). Now I hate anything lower than 40 but back then I had pretty low standards so it was acceptable to me.

I must have low standards too because mine's right in the neighborhood of 22 (Looks like it ranges between 20-24) and honestly it looks fine to me.  And I have never had any trouble with lag on any of my games.  *Shrug*  I know nothing about this stuff obviously so I have no idea why that is.
Resolution 1024x768
Aspect Ratio: Normal
Particle Effects: High
Texture Detail: High
At any rate, for whatever reason, there's no lag and IMHO the graphics look fine.  Not amazing, but certainly good enough.  I wouldn't trade my laptop for all the desktops in the world so maybe that's why I'm willing to give up some visuals.  Image IPB

Having actually played Mass Effect and Dragon Age just recently on decent hardware (Radeon HD 5670 at 1080p with every graphics setting at the highest) I'm not sure people know what they are talking about when they say "lag-free". I played on a Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (which is bad, but still a mile better than any Intel integrated graphics chip [except perhaps Sandy Bridge]) before and the difference is astounding. The graphics settings must be pulled way down to get steady, smooth frame rates on such hardware, and I'm not willing to make that compromise. The textures are designed to be viewed at the maximum level of detail, any lower loses something.

Anyways, there's very little hope of getting ME1 to work properly on a laptop with that chip. Sorry.

Those are pretty much the settings and resolution I had on my old hardware. I've been a console gamer since I was five (my first console was a SNES) and I rarely played games on PC before Mass Effect came out. I didn't mind playing in slow motion or watching slideshows on my old Intel 82845G. When first playing Mass Effect 22 frames per second seemed good enough for me but I wanted to play at my then native resolution (1280x1024) and that was pretty much impossible, which is why I upgraded. The difference was spectacular and later I bought myself a 1920 x 1080 display. Now I'm afraid I can never go back. Not that I want to brag or anything, my hardware is cheap as hell.

Turns out many people have low standards. On the Xbox 360 Mass Effect runs at 20 frames per second in some combat zones if the game is not installed on the HDD. Sometimes it drops to 14. I'm surprised Microsoft even released the game in that state.

What I mean by no lag SSV is that at no point during gameplay do I have to wait while the computer catches up with me. There are no stoppages in play. When I press a button, the computer reacts without sitting there 'thinking about it'. I've played games that way in the past and it is insanity-inducing.

Again, I do not deny that the graphics aren't at their best, but when taking a laptop somewhere else is the only way to get away from your screaming kids to play your beloved games, you suddenly become willing to deal with it. At least IME. ;)

Edited to correct embarassing grammar.

Regarding the original question of ME on Intel 4 series integrated graphics - I recommend you confirm that you have the current drivers - look for 15.17.x from intel download site. Intel had an issue with Mass Effect previously because it used a texture format that the Intel drivers didn't support. Intel added support for that texture format last spring, but it sounds like your laptop drivers may be older than that.

Hey all,

I thought I'd throw this question out there since I have an issue with my intel graphics chip. Unfortunately ME is only recognzing it versus my Geforce GT 325M. Anyone know how to get ME to recognize the nvidia chip? I updated the driver and I know it works with SC2 so it should  work with ME. Right? Any help would be appreciated, all I get is the black screen with sound. In the config utility, only the intel hd graphics show up in the drop down. The system info also just lists the intel integrated chip.

I've got Win 7 64 bit running on an Asus dual core
GT325m with 1gb ddr3

I have the 1.02 patch but haven't downloaded bring down the sky. Thanks for anyone's .02 in advance.

Hmm, so you have one of those Optimus laptops that switches between GPUs.

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions as I've never used one. Might be a good to idea to also ask on a forum where people know these dual-GPU laptops a bit better, what to do when a game/the drivers fail to trigger the Nvidia GPU like this. (Does Asus have some kind of users forum?)

Close the config utility.
Play a video file (leave it running in the background). Run the config utility and check.

If it still shows Intel HD, close it and run ANY OpenGL/D3D application (can be in windowed mode). This must force 'Performance mode' and switch towards the discrete graphics chip.
