Alright, so the sides have been established. you have the major factions that i see

Citadel Council
Systems Alliance
Cerberus
Mercenaries and Terminus Gangs (they're a force to be reckoned with when united)

Question is: who are we taking orders from?
for those who played Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, I think that system would work just fine.
Basically, all the factions are working towards one thing (defeating the reapers in this case), but thats about all they have in common. The groups arent entirely friendly with one another, and some are openly hostile. I think that we should start out being able to take orders from all of them, but as the game goes on, they start becoming more and more openly hostile with one another, forcing you to pick sides. Your loyalty to a side will be measured by a meter that shows how much a faction hates/loves you. severely hostile factions will stop at no end to kill you, while loyal factions NPC's will offer assistance, and for added flavor, the type of assistance will change depending on the faction (example: Cerberus may offer more intel, while the Alliance offers extra heavy firepower)
the faction you are sided with the most will come to respect you, revealing new information and a deeper plot (Council may begin to treat you with the respect they had for saren, TIM may make you his right hand man, rise in ranks in the Alliance, become something of a crimelord for the terminus) the faction you follow will determine the end of the series. WIll Cerberus secure human dominance in the galaxy? Will the Council keep the order they have for so long? Will the Alliance become the heroes of the galaxy? Will the Terminus systems grow in power, spreading corruption throughout the galaxy?

of course, Shepards own power isn't insignificant. the shadow broker is now one of his/her most powerful allies, possibly lover, the Normandy SR2 is arguably the most advanced ship in the galaxy, and I have a feeling things like the prothean sipher and EDI are going to play key roles

Thoughts?

So like New Vegas then?

While its a good idea i doubt it'd work for ME3 maybe in another game set in the same universe

Kinda, but in a broader sense, I havent played NV yet, but from what i understand is that there are two main warring factions to choose. the idea i have is i bit more layered. siding with the Citadel doesnt entirely cut you off from Cerberus, but you'll have to redeem yourself in their eyes to do it. I figured this idea would work because of the Shepard presents the Normandy and its crew free agents by the end of 2
