Another thread gave me an idea. Could this be an issue with sound and not spell effects, or graphics?
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/3197447
Reichscythe mentioned using Creative Alchemy to set these as default for dragon age. This will only work if you are using a Creative Labs Sound card (Most likely X-Fi series) within Vista or WIndows 7.
"I'm on Windows 7 x64 with an X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion series
- Updated to latest Creative Labs Drivers (6/10)
- Created a Creative Alchemy profile for Dragon Age with 4 buffers, 25 duration, 128 max voice count..."
So I tried this, since I have an XtremeGamer version of the XFI card. Well, it seemed not to really work for me. But, I thought, why not mess with the other sound settings.
Possible Fix
Open up your Dragon Age Launcher. Click on the "Configure" button.
Select the "Audio" tab on the left portion of the window.
These settings are checkmarked (enabled) for me:
Disable Music
Force Stereo Sound (For Headphone Use) - This may be optional, but I'm using headphones. I'll turn off and test later.
Don't Forget to Save Before exiting! If you don't, the changes will not take effect.
I also have read at least from two different people that setting the game to single core affinity, and not use multicore will work. I have not tried this yet.
If this works, or doesn't help anyone out there go ahead and post. This Crash to Destop issue may have multiple causes.
My
first crash was when I battled that little boy possessed by a desire
demon, him wanting to save his father. Sorry, I can't remember their
names. (EDIT: I think this is at ser perth)
I couldn't even finish
it, and decided to goto the mages tower next, since it's still part of
the quest. Well now I'm crashing constantly in there. Also, nothing but
demons.
I met a sloth demon, which sent me to his dream world. Yep, way more crashes.
Edit:
AMD Phenom II x3 740 3ghz
Sapphire 5770 ATI GPU
750 watt ANTEC New True Power PSU
ASUS M4A785TD-V Motherboard
4gb 1600 Crucial Memory
Creative X-FI Gamer Sound Card
As of december of 2010, all my drivers, bios, firmware are up to date in ALL my computer components.
This
includes ATI Catalyst 10.12 drivers. I uninstall previous drivers, use a
driver cleaner, and then install the newest driver directly from AMD's
website.
Running Dragon Age Ultimate from Steam.
