Would mentioning Big Rigs ten times just get me into trouble? :D

Edit: I should actually write a list instead of being lame.  In no particular order...

*  Half Life 2
*  Morrowind
*  Oblivion
*  Phantom Slayer
*  DA:O
*  Adventure
*  Ego Draconis
*  Teh Witcher
*  Gothic III
*  Mass Effect

I rather want to throw in ME2, Sacred II, FO3 and a bunch of others and I seem to be struggling to make up my mind, but it says "10".  I 'm also aware that most are within the past few years, but for me personally more recent games are better.

Edit: fail for listing HL2 twice. :unsure:

Oh god this is hard.

1. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (My favourite in the series just such a well designed and fun game. Sonic was the first game series i became a huge fan of it changed my life forever)

2. Street Fighter II (Probably the greatest fighting game of all time and a true legend of gaming)

3. Starfox (This was the game that made me want a SNES i remember playing it at a friends place and just being blown away by the graphics and music)

4. Syndicate (Being a fan of Bladerunner i loved this game. A dark grim future with a great storyline)

5. Dungeon Keeper (Play the bad guy, Kill the heros. Hours of fun and it's still fun to play and looks great)

6. Planescape:Tourment (Just a breathtaking story full of twists and great characters. Best written RPG i ever played)

7. Contra - (Inspired a generation of shooters, Many pretenders to the throne have popped up but none can take it's title)

8. Mass Effect (I remember playing this not really knowing what to expect. I instantly fell in love with the great locations, Beutiful music and loveable characters. A movie where you are the star and you pick your own ending. Brilliant)

9. Bioshock 2 (While i love the first game i feel they managed to top it withthe second. The story is much more coherent with less plot holes, The graphical detail is stunning the lighting is way better and the characters are just awesome.)

10. Mirrors Edge (Now this will be odd because it beat out both Super Mario Bros and Zelda to make the list and i talk about it's faults a lot but i'll focus on the good. Truely innovative,artisticly beautiful,great musical score and the only game to have a trailer that actually made me cry the first time i watched it. This game was a massive roll of the dice and in many ways it paid off.Yes that pun was intended :P)

Honourable mentions that almost made the list: Super Mario Bros,Legend Of Zelda,Mass Effect 2,Dragon Age Origins,Persona 3,Um Jammer Lammy,Final Fantasy VIII, Prince Of Persia,Assasins creed 2,God Of War, Chrono Triger,Phantasy Star IV, Guilty Gear XX:The Midnight Carnival,Portal,Half Life 2,Duke Nukem 3D,Doom,Pandemonium,Tomb Raider 2 and god i could go on forever >.>

Seeing old classics like that makes me wonder if I've forgotten more games than I remember...

I think that's rather by definition.  It someone posted a list that actually claimed to be "the" best games ever (as magazines sometimes do) it'd be a good way of starting an argument!  But I think it would generate more heat than lught.

Shame, really, as we have a thousand of these sorts of topic for every one of something else (Not that it's anyone's fault in particular), but it'd be nice to see some intelligent discussion arise. I'm gonna list 10 that I think are pretty damn good, even if I'm not a fan (Which sounds odd), mainly because they lead to a series or because of the impact they caused and the influence that was drawn from them.

1. Might & Magic
2. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
3. Populous
4. Starcraft
5. Mirror's Edge
6. Half-Life
7. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
8. Theme Hospital
9. Anno 1602
10. The Settlers

Doesn't mean we can't have some discussion too; it might even be intelligent. :) Unfortunately, in my case I had some difficulty being indecisive (well actually I find it very easy to be indecisive, which is the problem) but it's interesting nonetheless.  Also interesting to see Mirror's Edge mentioned a couple of times already since I've just been persuaded to download it myself.

It's encouraging to see that a lot of people aren't shy about saying that such-and-such 2 or 3 is their favourite game: there often seems to be this prevailing attitude that the original is best and sequels tend to dilute the idea so it's rather nice to see people being open about which is actually their favourite.  For me personally, most (though admittedly not all) games tend to get better with subsequent releases; though that's as a general rule and doesn't hold true in every case since there's been some real howlers, but I'm glad to read comments like Bioshock 2 topping Bioshock - even if I don't agree myself. :)

Had i done a top 10 on games i think that were innovative and influential or had an impact on the gaming world in general the list would be different. I might do that list later when i have had more time to think about it. I don't even know the rules this thread is going by anymore XD

It was inspired by your thread so you should do! :P

I'm now feeling all inadequate and that my list is too random to be of much use.  But they inspired me personally.  One of my own metrics was simply how much enjoyment I got out of them: which is why Fable got passed over (well, apart from forgetting about it at the time) since, although I really enjoyed it, it was comparatively brief.  Then again, HL2 was a lot more brief, but it wasn't up against the same sort of competition that Fable faced in my person library.

Sigh, how's that for some aimless whittering? :?

I disagree. BioShock 1 was a good experience, and BioShock 2 had the potential to be good, but Irrational weren't involved, and BioShock 2 was developed, in total, by four studios. It was an abysmal port for the PC with ridiculous system requirements and a multiplayer mode hampered by BioShock 2's cumbersome controls.

 1) Anno series (1404 and 1701)
2) Half Life 2 (ep1. and ep2 included)
3) Baldur's Gate series
4) The elder Scrolls : Morrowind (and exp.)
5) Diablo II (and exp)
6) Warcraft III (and exp)
7) Mass Effect Series

Good thing I have my least ready whenever it might need. Some games are mixed with the serieses, so it's over 10. Some honorable mentions are Gothic II, Just Cause II, X3 Reunion and Terran Conflict, Assassin's creed series, Stronghold series, Heroes of Might and Magic 4 and Disciples 2. :wizard:

I'm not sure I understand your disagreement: I also prefer the original Bioshock myself, but I'm interested to see other people's opinions about why their preferences are different.  The sort of thing I'm getting at is the "you're wrong to prefer Oblivion/Fallout 3/Gothic 3/whatever" that you see quite often, something which can make people reluctant to say "er, actually I quite like them, and here's why."

For me personally, Bioshock 2 didn't quite hit the spot in the same way that Bioshock did (I hate to use the word "linear" but one of the things I preferred about the original was to largely come and go as I pleased - even if I seldom actually used that feature), but that's one of those things where I think it's cool to hear people saying the opposite.

As far as Bioshock vs Bioshock 2. Bioshock was way scarier and had more atmosphere but it's story was predictable and full of plot holes and the plot twist was Good but at the same time a little predictable.

Combat was incredibly repetative with lots of the stages feeling quite monotonous there were moments where the game really shone but at times i was just plain bored also wasn't keen on combat having to alternate between weapon and plasmids was a pain. Bioshock 2 on the other hand combat was fluid you could use a weapon and plasmid at once. There were far more and better weapon upgrades and more combat tactics involved. The story was a lot less confusing you know what is going on from the start and building on that story is a great experience. I also liked more variety in enemies and the fact you could adopt little sisters which was a fun feature.

I just found overall Bioshock 2 was a more fun experience for me the first one i found a bit boring with a couple of great moments and a weird nonsensical final boss that looked like a lost member of the fantastic four.

As for the Bioshocks...I probably would've enjoyed the first game more if they hadn't been touting it as the spiritual successor to System Shock before release. So when I started playing it, I had that idea firmly in mind. But unfortunately Bioshock just can't live up to System Shock, so I ended up feeling rather disappointed. That and the gameplay felt a little too bland. At least there was the setting, the story, Andrew Ryan, and Sander ****ing Cohen.
Bioshock 2 was just too much of the same again.

As for a top 10, eh, can't be arsed right now to come up with what would most likely be the same list I use every other week when this topic pops up.
Might try to think of some different stuff later.

1- Oblivion- got it in 2007 and still play it now. Never gets old.

2- Fable II- i don't care what anyone says, it's good!

3- Mass effect 2- got to give bioware some credit, this is their website, off topic or not :P But it does genuienly come 3rd, a great game.

4- Red Dead Redemption- it's so funny jumping off buildings and falling off horses. In the zombie DLC I was on a roof, tried to jump to the next roof, kind of rebounded off it, fell backwards on a balcony railing (spiked, no less) and very slowly slif down into a group of zombies :)

5- Halo 3- just classic in my opinion.

6- Amnesia, the Dark Decent- the only game that ever scared me.

7- Dragonage Origins- got it for christmas and already love it.

8- The Orange Box- just plain awesome!

9- Alan Wake- it could of gone so much better, but was great all the same.

10- Fable III- better than the first, but worse than the second, the dullest of the series (litterally, with all the miasma and fog), but worth looking at and still gets a place in my list.

I'm also giving a award to a very special game, for being funny and nostalgic.

Nostalgia award: Rayman 3 hoodlem havoc- first game I ever played, and I look back at it in fondness. It may no longer be in my list, but it had a magic no other game had or ever has had, it was even a bit challenging (but I was 7 or so) and even had some jokes that were actually funny now that I look back (your guide says "rayman falls in love with a beautiful fairy queen with REALLY BIG... eyes *troubled look*)

I get what you're saying, but what makes Bioshock more awesome for me is that it had the creepy vending machines that would spontaneously break into their out-of-tune song when you wandered past.

Which is lame as reasons go for preferring one game over another, but that suits me just fine. :D
